After the incident, Sampson was brought to the closest animal hospital for care. An x-ray showed the pellet was in Sampson’s abdomen and treatments were started at that time. Despite first efforts, Sampson stopped eating and began vomiting and having diarrhea, losing over 20 pounds during the following 2 weeks. Fearing Sampson would not make it much longer, he was referred to LVCC for further diagnostics and treatment. He was very thin, depressed and would not lift his tail. Dr. Cutbirth performed an ultrasound showing no internal organ damage but a very small amount of fluid was present which we collected using ultrasound guidance. Examination of the fluid showed he had a severe infection but suggested no intestines had been penetrated by the pellet. Blood work confirmed this and showed his organ function was normal. This greatly improved his prognosis. Additional x-rays proved that this publication the pellet had been freely is sponsored moving around his abdomen. in part by Knowing this, Dr. Cutbirth began Sampson’s treatments. Missed Pet Reunited With Owner After Six Months In June, Xander, a five year old Doberman, escaped Shaun’s home fearfully after a thunderstorm and disappeared without a trace. After restless months of searching, Shaun reluctantly gave up hope on finding his best friend. He stayed in the hospital for care and monitoring with IV fluids and antibiotics. Less than 24 hours after surgery, Sampson became progressively brighter and was wagging his tail when he left the next morning. He began eating and his energy level gradually returned to normal over the next few days. Within 3 weeks of his surgery, Sampson was back to his old self, gaining most of his weight back, and maintaining without any medications. He even went to the beach last week to celebrate with his family! Sampson’s bravery and determination to heal will remain an inspiration to us all. Pellet guns can cause real damage, please be careful. 1. Give your puppy a treat reward outside after they potty instead of giving the treat when they come back inside. 2. Nearly 6 months later, we received a phone call from another client regarding a dog she gained the trust of and finally caught. As she described the dog, Kaylin, of our Customer Care Team, urged them to come in. Upon arrival to LVCC, we confirmed Xander’s identity with one quick scan of his microchip, and reunited him with reunited with his best friend, Shaun. Danielle’s Training Tip Plan your pet’s staycation. Xander’s story is a happy and special one that we are proud to share, however not all lost pet stories end the same way. The fact is that 1 in 3 pets goes missing during its lifetime, and without proper ID, more than 90% never return home. A microchip implant takes just seconds to place for cats & dogs and provides the best protection with a permanent ID that can never be lost or removed. Dr. Patrick Cutbirth recommended a Senior Wellness Screening Nurse Package to us. This package Heather, included a thorough physical Curtis & Dr. Patrick exam, a panel of blood and urine tests, ultrasound, and finally x-rays of our chest, hips and knees. According to Dr. Cutbirth and our group of veterinarians, this combination of tests may expose thyroid, heart, kidney or liver diseases, diabetes, and cancers. As in human medicine, early detection often provides a better outcome, including more effective treatment options. Although this sounds like a full day of non-stop testing, Dr. Cutbirth explained that the process is actually quick and painless, so we began. Catching Up with Calvin & Curtis If you’ve visited the hospital or resort recently you may have met me, Curtis, or my brother, Calvin. We are the resident cats of Lafayette Veterinary Care Center and we recently celebrated our 8th birthday! The LVCC team suddenly referred to us a ‘seniors’, that’s right…seniors. This term was justified by explaining how cats and dogs age in comparison to humans. You’ve probably heard that one year of a pet’s life is equal to seven in human years. Actually current research provides a more accurate conversion (see chart). We recommend the senior wellness package for all pets that are 65 years of age in human years or older. This includes: Pet’s Actual Age Pet’s Age in “Human” Years 4 years 29 years 7 years 50 years 10 years 66 years 13 years 78 years 15 years 88 years This makes us approximately 50 years old! Although that may not make us seniors in your eyes, or our own, the doctors explained that it’s at this age that many common diseases are detectable in their early, and easiest to manage stages. We started with the physical exam which was basic for me. I mostly laid there while my nurse, Heather, massaged my head. Dr. Cutbirth examined me from nose to tail, listening to my heart and lungs and checking my ears, eyes and mouth. He also flexed my joints and checked my knees. I had failed to mention that my knee had been giving me trouble after a long and exciting lizard chase. He noticed the injury after watching my walk and jump. Before finishing, Heather took a small blood sample for my blood tests - the little poke wasn’t bad, especially when followed with a treat! Next we started with my ultrasound which tickled a little, but it was neat to see what was going on in there. He looked over my abdominal organs in search of anything that might have indicated any sign of a disease. Finally we finished with having my x-rays taken of my chest and my knees. This part was the easiest, I just laid on the table and had my picture taken; one of my many talents. After reviewing all the results, Dr. Cutbirth delivered great news- all my tests came back normal! My knee looks good, but will feel better with a new diet and a 2-3 pound weight loss. I would personally recommend this Senior Wellness Package to any pet over 8 years old, who may be suffering in silence like I was with my knee. My team has bundled everything you need into a special package. Call them for details!
