The clubs annual Quiz Night held on the 25th May was a great success and raised substantial funds for the club and charities. A well supported night and a big thank you to all that attended and made the night the success it was. A special thank you to FPR for their donation, and also a big thanks to all the other who donated and help make it a success. For those that have not heard, there is a new motoring enthusiast group that has formed, below is an extract of who they are and their purpose: In WA we have created a group called WA Car Enthusiasts and we have a small group of people that have been liaising with A.C.M.C. on the east coast . The main aim is to setup a WA branch of A.C.M.C. To do this, we need other associations on board to support the potential A.C.M.C. WA Branch. The A.C.M.C. WA Branch would be the spokes group that would represent other associations when dealing with Govt bodies in regards to legislation issues, vehicle modifications /National Code of Practice, driver training and education etc . Other item’s on their agenda include, identifying and engaging with state and council authorities, establishing a communication network between A.C.M.C., Association’s, their member’s and the individual car enthusiast . Campaigning to increase membership’s within car club’s and club’s to join member associations . This is a body that is long overdue and badly needed by all motoring enthusiasts . The W.A.C.E. has been successful, so far with the assistance of Tony Simpson MLA for Darling Range, we sat last Friday 14/6/13 with Peter Phillips, Policy Advisor to Hon Lisa Harvey MLA and Minister for Police, Road Safety and Women’s Interests . We discussed the wishes of current WACE and future A.C.M.C. with Peter and informed him that proceedings have begun to establish the West Australian branch of the A.C.M.C. It will be interesting to see how much success they have negotiating with the WA government, especially with the proposed changes to the "hoon" legislation. Stay safe on the roads and I look forward to seeing you at the next club event. Lyndon. XTRA FPV TICKFORD OWNERS CLUB OF W.A. We have got a few things in this edition. Pete’s article on E10 fuel, which we have had previously and running again due to interest generated by the media. We have also had the Barbagallo V8 Supercar round for the year and Bill has provided some great shots, plus we have our V8 Guru commentary on the rounds. There was lots happening at Albany with Ray and Julie providing us with their articles. I also wrote an article on the Quiz Night, unfortunately without photo’s, just having to much fun and forgot. This months committee member profiles are of Helen and Jarod Copeland. Helen owns a FG F6 310 and Jarod an FG GT. They both love their white FPV’s. XTRA E10 Fuel — What’s it Mean for Me?? You may remember this article which was in our Club Magazine last year. With the recent introduction of Ethanol based fuels in Western Australia and for members who are not aware of this information, we thought it beneficial to re-run the article in this edition of the magazine. The following information relates to Ethanol fuels sold at the bowsers. Although it doesn’t directly relate to our vehicles, the information explains the detrimental effects of using E10 and fuels with added ethanol. Fuel tanks in our vehicles are not directly vented to the atmosphere as are marine fuel systems, however, something to be concerned about in the very least. Those who have vehicles that are not driven often, should take note of this information. Perhaps the cons far outweigh the pros and the couple cents per litre decrease in price than regular unleaded. Most Tickford, XR and FPV vehicles are suitable to run E10 fuel, however, please check your vehicles handbook before use. The following is taken from Yamaha Outboard Service training 2009. As E10 fuel has been introduced into various regions of Australia & New Zealand, reports, good and bad, have been widely circulated in the general public and particularly within the boating community. Alternative fuel blends to decrease our dependence on foreign oil will be with us until internal combustion engines are replaced with alternate power sources. Following are questions and answers that may help you when addressing issues and questions. Q. What is E10 fuel? A. E10 fuel is a blend of ethanol (10%) and gasoline (90%). Q. What is ethanol? A. Ethanol is highly refined alcohol that is made from grain (typically corn, rice or sugar) or the cellulose from other plants. Q. Why is ethanol added to gasoline? A. Public Law requires the increased use of renewable motor fuels. In most areas, ethanol is the most readily available renewable fuel that can be added to conventional gasoline without major changes. Q. When is ethanol added to gasoline? A. Ethanol is added to gasoline by local or regional distributors. Q. What are the negative properties of ethanol? A. Ethanol has several properties that contribute to fuel system issues. • Ethanol is a strong cleaner (solvent). • Ethanol is hygroscopic (e.g., it has a strong attraction to moisture). • E10 fuel’s usable life span may be less than the normal length of off- season boat storage. Q. Wouldn’t the cleaning properties of ethanol be good for a fuel system? A. No, fuel systems that have been used for non-oxygenated gasoline will have varnish deposits and surface corrosion (rust and aluminium oxides). This includes the tanks and pipes used for fuel storage and transportation. Ethanol will clean varnish as well as surface corrosion from any surface it contacts. Ethanol may dissolve plastic resins used to make some fibreglass tanks. The amount of material cleaned from all of these systems can quickly exceed the filtration capacity of fuel system filters resulting in restricted fuel flow. Ultimately engine performance is reduced and potentially damage to the Engine can occur. Q. What issues are caused by ethanol’s attraction to water? A. Ethanol molecules have a stronger bond to water molecules than to gasoline molecules. In the absence of water, ethanol and gasoline molecules will bond. When water is added to E10 fuel, the bond between the ethanol and gasoline will weaken. When the percentage of water in E10 fuel reaches approximately 0.5%, the bond between the ethanol and gasoline molecules will breakdown and the ethanol molecules will attach to the water molecules. This is called phase separation. Q. What happens when phase separation occurs? A. Several things happen: • The ethanol and water molecules settle to the bottom of the fuel tank forming a distinct layer of water & ethanol on the bottom and gasoline without ethanol on the top. • Fuel for the engine is drawn from the bottom of the tank. An engine will not run properly, if at all, on ethanol and water. The ethanol and water mixture is very corrosive to some metals and can damage internal engine components. • The remaining gasoline, without ethanol, will have an octane level below the original E10 fuel’s octane level, approximately 2 3 points lower. This octane level may be below the requirements of the engine. Q. Can phase separation be reversed? A. No, there are no additives or processes that will recombine phase separated ethanol and gasoline. Q. Can I use the gasoline remaining after removal of the phase separated water and alcohol? A. No, as mentioned above, the remaining gasoline will have a lower octane level that may not be compatible with your engine. XTRA FPV TICKFORD OWNERS CLUB OF W.A. Inc. 11 Q. How long can E10 fuel be stored? A. There are many different opinions concerning how long it is ok to store any fuel (E10 fuel or regular fuel), 2 weeks, 90 days, 1 year, or longer, before losing the properties that are required for proper and safe operation of your engine. There are too many variables (e.g., the age of fuel when purchased, temperature, humidity, use of stabilizers and the type of storage containers) to accurately predict how long. Q. Why do boats seem to have more issues attributed to E10 fuel than cars? A. Cars are having issues but are somewhat more tolerant due to typical usage patterns and differences in their fuel systems. Major differences are: • Modern automotive fuel systems (fuel filler, fuel tank, distribution lines and engine components) are closed or non-vented. Once the fuel is pumped into the tank, there is very little circulation of outside air (containing moisture) into the fuel system. • Boats are operated and often stored in a very wet environment increasing the risk of water directly entering the fuel system. • Boats have vented fuel systems which allow moisture laden air to circulate into the fuel tank as the fuel is drawn out of the tank and as the fuel expands and contracts during heating and cooling cycles of the outside air. • Automotive fuel tanks are typically much smaller than boat fuel tanks and are refilled more frequently. A full tank of fuel in a car or truck, typically 70 - 100 litres, may be used and refilled every week or two. Boat fuel tanks, typically 70 - 400+ litres per tank, may only be refilled once a month during the boating season and typically may sit unused for many months during the off season. • Some boats use fibreglass fuel tanks. Polyester resins can be dissolved by ethanol. Q. Are Yamaha engines compatible with E10 fuel? A. All current models from 2008 have been designed with fuel system components that are tolerant to fresh fuel containing ethanol up to 10% (E10). Outboard fuel systems can still be affected by water, dissolved gum, varnish, corrosion particles, and dissolved resins that E10 fuel has cleaned from the distribution system and your boat’s fuel tanks. Q. Can I use fuel with a higher percentage of ethanol, such as E15 or E85? A. No, all of the negative issues discussed above will be increased and may cause major damage to the engine. Q. What can I do to prevent issues with E10 fuel? A. Total prevention of issues may not be possible but there are steps you can take to minimize the occurrence and severity of the negative affects of E10 fuel: • If at all possible, do not use E10 fuel. • Ideally (before switching to E10 fuel) have your fuel tank completely drained to remove any accumulated water. As little as 500ml of water can promote phase separation in 100litres of E10 fuel. The result would be 10.5litres of unusable ethanol and water mixture on the bottom of the tank. • If the tank can be completely drained, the internal surfaces should be mechanically cleaned to remove rust or aluminium oxides. Fuel polishing companies may be able to provide this specialised service. Consider replacing the fuel tank in an older boat. • If your boat has fibreglass fuel tanks built prior to the early 1990’s, consult with your boat builder concerning E10 compatibility. • If unable to completely drain and clean your tank before switching to E10 fuel, add as much E10 fuel as possible to minimize the possibility of phase separation. Example: 500ml of water may cause phase separation in 100litres of E10 but 500ml of water in 115 litres would be safe from phase separation. • Install a Yamaha 10-micron water separating/ fuel filter between the boat’s fuel tank and the engine. • Change the 10-micron filter every 3-6 months of use until there are no indications of excessive water and contaminates collecting in the filter. Normal filter changes are recommended every 12months of use. • Carry extra filters and change more frequently if there are indications the efficiency of the filter is rapidly diminishing due to excessive water and contaminates. Do not drain a used filter and reinstall. Contaminated fuel can enter the filtered side of the filter while draining. • Buy name brand fuel from the same source if possible and from stations that have newer, cleaner storage tanks. • Occasionally, test your fuel to verify the amount of ethanol is not higher than 10%. The blending of ethanol with gasoline by distributors is not a precision process. Inexpensive test kits are available, GOOGLE E10 Fuel Test Kit. • Regularly use Yamaha Fuel Stabiliser to retard fuel aging. • Stabilize fresh fuel before storing. Stabilizers do not help fuel that has already aged. Stabilisers are most effective when immediately added to fuel fresh from the gas station or marina fuel pump. • Ensure stabilised fuel is circulated throughout the engine’s fuel system components, not just the fuel tank, prior to storage. Drain fuel from carburettors and fuel vapour separators (VSTs) that have open air vents. • Storage in sealed containers, in a cool and dry location, will extend the usable life of the fuel. • Store fuel tanks approximately 7/8 full, minimizing the amount of air space above the fuel inside the fuel tank. Note, storing completely full may allow some fuel spillage as the fuel expanded during hot weather. Do not attempt to seal a vented boat fuel system. The inability to vent could cause damage to the fuel tank or other fuel system components. • Minimize the time fuel is allowed to age in your fuel tank or other storage containers. • Do not attempt to use fuel with ethanol content higher than 10%. 12 FPV TICKFORD OWNERS CLUB OF W.A. XTRA V8 Supercar Zone Barbagallo Lone Star State Well after racing then leaving Perth behind us it was a rush trip back home with very little time to prep the cars and have them at Avalon Airport, even the Queensland based teams didn’t have time to go home. So Off we went on a combined 18 hour flight with lots of fun and games had by all as we began the long trek to the Lone Star State. Arriving at “The Circuit of the Americas” you sense that this is one hell of a motor sport complex with world class facilities awaiting us. The heat and humidity was almost overwhelming after coming from a winter climate straight into summer. This place was so unlike Abu Dhabi with so many interested onlookers and people generally interested in what was happening with all the questions asked. It felt like home except for the accents although I was used to it having lived there for a few years. The hospitality shown by the locals was welcomed and a few of us set off to explore the sights and the night life. A couple of opposition crew members ran foul off the law, one for street drinking outside a strip club and resisting arrest and the other (Mark Dutton, Whingecups race engineer) was caught for jay walking and resisting arrest. Most Ford fans were hoping he would get a life sentence but unfortunately he was only detained for about half a day before being sprung by team principal Dane. XTRA FPV TICKFORD OWNERS CLUB OF W.A. Inc. 15 So finally we got down to racing on this new track and everyone thought that tyre degradation was going to be a big problem. It turned out to be the opposite with drivers reporting that they couldn’t believe how well the tyre’s hung in there. So once again the bad luck curse descended on FPR and we came away from there with our tail between our legs, although we did learn a lot and will be ready next time we are there. Hopefully they will let us race on the full Grand Prix circuit (5.2km) instead of the (3.2km) we used, as well as throw in the soft tyre format to help spice up the racing. All in all the locals seemed to enjoy V8Supercars so much more than the Arabs. On the topic of next time we are there, Will we ? Ford’s sponsorship of FPR ends at the conclusion of the 2013 season with no idea as to what’s happening. What will we race come 2017 ? Fusion, Taurus or Mustang. The Fusion seems to be the logical choice as it’s what’s racing in NASCAR at the moment . Top End Well after a three week break and everyone recovered from jetlag it was time to pack up the transporters and head to the top end of Australia (Darwin). We were welcome by beautiful warm weather with the maximum in the low 30’s and the minimum in the low 20’s. The week before we headed to Darwin we had a big test day at Winton along with all the teams co-drivers (S. Richards, S. Owen, J. McIntyre and D. Canto). We got through a lot of things we wanted to try as you can’t do that at race meetings. This test proved invaluable and we headed to the top end feeling pretty confident that we had learnt a lot about the cars. Friday’s practice went to plan with tasks carried out as usual including, car balance, tyre wear, fuel consumption etc. This year is quite tricky with every team having one less set of tyres per race meeting so how you use them is up to you that’s why you see some of the good drivers down the order. This then becomes a game of cat and mouse as nobody really knows exactly who has what. So Frosty bolted on a brand new set of greens (Hard) and put the car on provisional pole in practice 4. Qualifying was not easy with only a 20 minute session and with 28 other cars on track it’s not easy to find space . Great effort by Davy Reynolds who found the sweet spot on set up and grabbed two pole positions. Unfortunately for Dave he couldn’t turn them into race wins but he did find the speed which the car has been missing in recent races. So with a couple of podiums for the weekend we packed up and were pretty happy with what we had seen and there is no doubt that the Pepsi Max Falcons are the fastest cars out there. Now we just need a little luck to go our way and we should have a very strong package for the second half of the year. So roll on Townsville and let’s have some Ford victories. The day kicked off early where everyone met at the usual spot near the Muzz Buzz in Beechboro. After getting ourselves sorted we all headed off in convoy to the show. Which is a pretty short cruise. On arrival we found ourselves heading over to a new location near the GT Club. It turned out a good location on the corner with the footpath going past and close to everything. After working out how we wanted the cars set up it was time to fire up the barby and get some real breakfast into us. Then I needed to tidy up the ute as I had left it parked under a tree while we were setting up and as it warmed up the dew dropped on it, it looked like it was raining under the tree. There was a great variety of cars on show, plenty to keep us occupied for the Day. We even had our very own Car Show Virgin in Mark Gregor. As the day drew to an end we all pitched in and packed up and enjoyed the procession of cars leaving. It seemed a lot of people were doing the same as no one appeared to be in a real rush to leave. XTRA FPV TICKFORD OWNERS CLUB OF W.A. Inc. 19 The Car Show Virgin The Whiteman Park Classic Car Show was the first time I had participated a car in a show. On the day, ‘Rapid Bill’ labelled me the Car Show Virgin. Not that I’m a stranger to car shows though as I’ve attended many shows over the decades as a spectator, but this time was the first as a participant. I’m also not unfamiliar with the car scene as I’ve been an enthusiast since as far back as I can remember. I had the reputation in my family of being able to name every make and model on the local roads when I was aged about 6 or 7, but admittedly there weren’t too many different models around in the mid 60’s. I began buying car magazines in my early teens (probably could have paid for my GT with the money spent over the years) and still have every mag ever purchased. I got my licence the day I turned 17 and have been buying and playing with cars ever since. In the early days I had a string of Monaro coupes (HK, HQ’s & HJ) and wish I still had them now. Over the years I’ve had a few different marques but predominantly Fords. I’ve never been a car club guy but have been mates with Bill for many years and have followed his involvement in ‘our’ club. Over the years I’ve attended a few club events with Bill and have thoroughly enjoyed them. As Bill with attest, I have been a fan of the B series GT’s ever since they were released and was fortunate enough recently to buy my son’s shockwave BA Mk II GT after he bought himself an octane FG GT. Immediately after the purchase I joined the club. Whiteman Park was my first official club event as a member. I wanted my GT to look the goods at the show, so with much good advice from Bill I spent many hours with Mother’s products clay barring, polishing and detailing, no doubt like everyone else did. I had a great day talking with the other club members who are a really nice bunch of people, as well as checking out the other cars at the show. The club’s display looked great and I was proud to be a member of the club. Also got a buzz out of people looking at my car and taking the odd photo…….and I’m no longer a Car Show Virgin. 20 FPV TICKFORD OWNERS CLUB OF W.A. Inc. We had 4 cars, Arthur & Judy Dawson, myself and Christopher Dippel from Perth. We set our cars up and watched the Great Southern Street Machine Club enter the area and then all the “Muscle Cars” (Falcon GT’s from first to XYHO Phase III, Holdens and Chryslers) also staged in the area this year. We had a late arrival in Wayne Pearson and his TS50, a welcome site as all the other cars were FG Falcons. Wayne was competing in the Hill Climbs on the Saturday and Monday. Later in the day we were joined by Julie who was driving the Transfield bus with the Navy Reserve Band in tow. Saw some fantastic racing, in particular, Glen Badger (GSSMA) Orange XY being closely pursued by a Mini, memories from year ago. An SLR 5000 driver tried to beat an XD into a corner and finished up ploughed into the cement blocks with excessive damage. The sky gods shone upon us and the rain stayed away. Inc. 23 Working Weekend I was working on this weekend, fortunately the coach task I had was to Albany. I transported the Navy Band in my coach as special guests at this years Albany Classic. It was really good to be down in Albany for a coach task involving cars. This allowed me to spend time with the club members in Albany and have a good time. It was organised for me to take the classic race drivers around the track in the coach. The commentator was in the coach explaining the track layout to the drivers. He was not to sure if the coach would fit through the tight bends of the Shannons slide section. The coach did make it and we drove around twice, only in second and third gear. Later that day I had the Navy Band in the coach and we went half way around the track, parking behind the Albany Hotel. The organisers paused the race for me to get through. The Navy Band set up in York street to play for a few hours. After the show and racing the band played at the Albany Hotel. It is not everyday you get to drive around a race track in a large coach, even though I was only in second and third gear, and get paid for it. The Ford race drivers noticed that I was a Ford supporter. I received the thumbs up from them for being their coach driver, and in Ford colours. Julie Devlin 24 FPV TICKFORD OWNERS CLUB OF W.A. Inc. XTRA With the annual Quiz night upon us we headed off to the Innaloo Sportsman's Club. This venue is great with plenty of parking, plenty of room and most important of all, kindly donated free for our night. On arrival we were greeted by Tonia, Pete and Matt at the door then headed off to find our table. Our table was made up Helen, her Mum and Dad, Nic, Laura, Lyndon, Mel, Rita, me, and combined kids. Our aim for the night, don’t come last. We ticked that box, whew. Once organised at the table Murray and I, the two Murray’s, got out there and selling envelopes with Nic and Laura who were going hard selling raffle tickets. On the other end Helen, Mel and Lyndon were at the prize table helping those lucky people who won something in their envelopes. I must say that everyone was very generous and bought many envelopes and tickets through the night. I had lots of fun doing it. Back to business though, it was much harder to achieve our aim staying off the bottom of the ladder. The pressure was on as other tables were getting lots more answers right than us. Craig and Doug, the “Number One Music Quiz” boys, kept the pace up with constant questions, challenges, jokes, music, more questions and even more questions. Thanks guy’s, we were having such a great time we forgot to take photo’s. This is probably a relief for Wayne who got up and did his own special dance to “Sexy and I Know It”, followed by Rita putting together some moves to the “Stripper” tune. Through the night there were also auctions and skills events to also keep us busy. I thought I had the bottle of grog in the bag with my coin almost touching it, then at the last minute one of the guy’s got closer. Just shows you should never give up. Thanks everyone who come along to the night and participated that's what makes it successful. From this we were able make our community a better place by donating our proceeds to Princess Margaret Children's Hospital and the Police & Citizens Youth Club of WA. To even have an event we need those who Organise it. On behalf of the committee and club, I would like to give a big big thanks to Tonia and Pete for all the organising and setting up required to hold a successful night. It really involves many hours of phoning, chasing, driving around picking up stuff, then putting it all together on the night. Our club is very lucky to have people who are prepared to put that sort of effort into our events. We also wish to acknowledge and sincerely thank the following Sponsors who have kindly donated prizes in the way of goods and services for our raffles and auctions: SHANNONS INSURANCE CHANNEL 7 PEDDERS SUSPENSION, OSBORNE PARK CHANNEL 10 WESTERN AUSTRALIAN TROTTING ASSOC.
