Changing an Improper Fraction into a Mixed Number

We are learning to change an improper
fraction into a mixed number.
5/4
Improper Fraction
=1¼
Mixed Number
I will know that I have learnt because I will:
 Divide the numerator (top part of fraction) by
the denominator (bottom part of fraction)
 Write the quotient as the whole number and
the remainder as the numerator.
 The denominator remains the same.
Eg
17
/4
17 ÷ 4 = 4r1
The quotient, 4, is the whole number.
The remainder, 1, is the numerator.
The denominator remains 4.
17
/4 = 41/4
Extension:
 Create your own improper fraction and change
it into a mixed number.
