Geometry Unit
Standards:
MA.3.4 2000 - Geometry
Students describe and compare the attributes of plane and solid geometric shapes and use their
understanding to show relationships and solve problems.
Objective:
When given images, students will identify geometric concepts such as geometric, plane and solid
figures.

Introduction to Unit:
Introduce the chapter by having students look through chapter 15 to see what will be ahead and
predict what they will be learning. Make a Web of the words students suggest about “Geometry”
from words they gather in the text. While the teacher creates the web on the board, have students
fill out the ABC’s of worksheet while providing words.

When identifying geometric figures, students will use the terms point, line, and line segment
correctly.
Students will identify the differences between a line and a line segment when drawing an
example.
Introduction to lesson:
After completion of web and handout watch “Brain Pop on Geometry”

Line Figures: Introduce the terms Line, line segments, ray: Use handout of lines to help guide
students. Have examples of what each figure looks like and what it does not.
Hand out homework worksheet if torn out of workbook. Allow the students time to at least start
the assignment and ask questions.
Homework: Practice pages 15.1 problems 1-12 Take grade.
Lesson: Quadrilaterals and Plane Shapes
Standard:
MA.3.4.1 2000
Identify quadrilaterals as four-sided shapes.
Objective:
Given multiple images of plane figures, students will identify at least 3 quadrilaterals.
When describing a quadrilateral, students will state it is a four-sided shape.
Materials:
Plane Figures and Quadrilaterals: Review names of shapes.
Brain Pop Junior on shapes

Hand out Geometry Study Guide. Have students color in the figure as they are
introduced.
Introduce the term Plane Shapes and Quadrilaterals. Use pages 418-419 in textbook.
Do worksheet practice 15.2 together in class.
Lesson: Solid Figures
Time: 30 minutes
Standards:

Identify, describe, and classify: cube, sphere, prism, pyramid, cone, cylinder.
MA.3.4.10 2000
Recognize geometric shapes and their properties in the environment and specify their locations.
Objectives:
Students will identify solid figures with correct name with looking at a picture.
Students will find examples of 10 geometric shapes in the classroom.
Materials:
PowerPoint, Geometry Study Guide, Volume Set.
Lesson:
Use the PowerPoint on solid figures to introduce and review names.
Solid Figures: PowerPoint
Pass out “Geometry Study Guide” for students to follow along. Include the volume set for
another visual aid.
Have the students color in the figure when addressed.
Pass out Scavenger Hunt of Figures.
Have the students find examples of figures in room. First have the students work individually fir
the first five minutes then work together. When finished have students give a few examples
found when finished.

Solid and Plane Figures
Directions: Find everyday items in the classroom that represent either a plane or
solid figure.

Lesson: Parts of Solid Figures
MA.3.4.4 2000
Identify common solid objects that are the parts needed to make a more complex solid object.
Objective:
When given a solid figure, the students will verbally identify faces, vertices, and edges.
Materials:
PowerPoint: Vertex, Faces, Edges
NETs
Lesson:
Use PowerPoint on Vertex, Edge, and Faces. Have the students label their solid figures on the
handout Geometric Study Guide. Use the PowerPoint to address the parts of a solid figure.
Have students connect that faces are two dimensional shapes connected to make three
dimensional shapes. Ask what the figure would look like if it was opened up and laid flat.
Pass out Nets to students. Review the faces and ask what the solid figure could be if it was
folded up. Do the first net together. Walk around the room for student assistance.
Have the students use their nets to review Edges, Faces, and Vertices.
Lesson: Classifying Triangles
Time: 35 minutes

MA.3.4.10 2000
Recognize geometric shapes and their properties in the environment and specify their
locations.
Objective:
When given images of triangles, students will identify its properties.
Materials:
PowerPoint Classifying Triangles
Classifying triangles. Use PowerPoint of the four main triangles, equilateral, isosceles, scalene,
and right triangles.
Lesson:
Use PowerPoint to introduce triangles. We classify triangles by its sides.
Scalene: all sides different
Isosceles: 2 sides the same
Equilateral: All sides the same
Conclusion:
Use the SmartBoard Jeopardy review game containing triangles, plane figures, geometric
figures, solid figures.
Homework: Workbook Pages 15.4, 15.6, 15.7 for review. Take grade
