CUMNOR HOUSE SCHOOL 9 JANUARY 2015 WEEKLY NEWSLETTER HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL Christmas Carol Service at Croydon Minster The Choristers certainly summed up the whole evening with their beautiful rendition of ‘The Very Best Time of Year’ at the Christmas Carol Service. On Monday 15 December, the Croydon Minster was full with parents, boys, friends and families who had come to share in the celebrations. There was lots of music, with singing from the Training Choir, Junior Choir and the Choristers who were joined for the first time by a Staff Choir - it was so lovely for the boys to see (and hear) their teachers in a different role. In addition to the choirs and the congregational singing, there was musical accompaniment from the Bell Band, the String Quartet, Edric Pepra (Oboe) and Elvin Pepra (Flute). The music was interspersed with clear and confident readings from boys from all age groups throughout the Prep School and a final address from The Reverend Canon, Colin Boswell which reminded us of the charities who would be receiving donations from the £1054.51 raised by the offertory. The charities include the African Education Trust and Marie Curie Cancer Care for Children. Once the service was over, the Brass Ensemble played some traditional carols as the congregation made their way home. Well done to all those who took part. It was a truly memorable evening, Mrs Magill 2 1C ASSEMBLY On Monday 8 December, 1C retold one of their favourite stories, ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson, to the rest of the Pre-Prep. In the story, Stick Man gets used as a stick for a dog, a swan’s nest, a flag for a sand castle, a Pooh stick and an arm for a snowman. He really wants to be with his family but nearly finds himself getting burnt in a fireplace. Luckily, Father Christmas comes down the chimney and takes him in his sleigh back to the Stick Family Tree. We thought about the meaning of this story, and about being with our families at Christmas time. Mrs Curtis UNICEF BISCUIT SALE Before Christmas, Mrs White’s Laserlight Christian Club, held a biscuit sale to raise money for Unicef’s Ebola Appeal. The biscuits were a huge success, selling out very quickly. We were very proud of some of our boys who still donated money even though there were no biscuits left. £118 was raised for this worthy appeal. 3 A warm welcome to the newest member of our Sports Department, Mr George Swinburne! Mr Swinburne brings with him a wealth of rugby experience, having represented England U16 and U18 at rugby and played professional rugby at Northampton RFC Academy, Harlequins RFC XV and Bath RFC Academy. He will be teaching swimming, games and P.E. We wish him the very best and are excited to have him with us!
