LET’S WALK IN THE WORD
PART 6
SERMON OUTLINE
PASTOR BOB RICE: SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2014
CENTRAL TEXTS Genesis 6
The Wickedness and Judgment of Man
6 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply
on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to
2
them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of
men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives
for themselves of all whom they chose.
3
the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had
corrupted their way on the earth.
The Ark Prepared
13
And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has
come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence
through them; and behold, I will destroy them with
14
the earth. Make yourself an ark of gopherwood;
make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and
15
outside with pitch. And this is how you shall make
it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred
cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty
16
cubits. You shall make a window for the ark, and
you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the
door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with
17
lower, second, and third decks. And behold, I
Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to
destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the
breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall
18
die. But I will establish My covenant with you; and
you shall go into the ark—you, your sons, your wife,
19
and your sons’ wives with you. And of every living
thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort
into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall
20
be male and female. Of the birds after their kind,
of animals after their kind, and of every creeping
thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind
21
will come to you to keep them alive. And you shall
take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and you
shall gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you
and for them.”
[a]
And the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with
man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall
4
be one hundred and twenty years.” There were
giants on the earth in those days, and also
afterward, when the sons of God came in to the
daughters of men and they bore children to them.
Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of
renown.
5
[b]
Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man
was great in the earth, and that every intent of the
6
thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And
the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the
7
earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the LORD
said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from
the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping
thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have
8
made them.” But Noah found grace in the eyes of
the LORD.
Noah Pleases God
9
This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man,
perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.
10
And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and
Japheth.
22
Thus Noah did; according to all that God
commanded him, so he did.
11
The earth also was corrupt before God, and the
12
earth was filled with violence. So God looked upon
NOTES:
Genesis 5:3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own
likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.
1
1. Adam and Eve had Able and Cain and many other sons and daughters. Many of their
children had descendants but the Bible focuses on Seth and his descendants.
 All humans today can trace their genealogy back to Noah. He is our common
descendant.
2. The condition of the earth at the time of Noah has both historical and contemporary
relevance.
 Historically – it led to the flood
 Contemporarily – these same conditions will be present at Christ’s return (Matt
24:3-8, 36-42)
3. What were the characteristics of Noah’s time?
Gen 6:1-4 The Great Defilement.
a. Two interpretations of the phrase “sons of God” in verse 2:
I.
The sons of God were the descendants of Shem– The defilement here
was that the Holy lineage of God was polluted by the world.
II.
The sons of God were angelic beings - the defilement here is that the very
DNA of man was adulterated by non-human DNA and threatened to
destroy the human race.
b. Either way there was a great defilement that desecrated God’s plan and purpose
for man.
c. There was great wickedness and violence everywhere. Gen 6:5-6, 11-13
4. Gen. 6:7, 13 The state of the earth invoked the judgment of God.
5. Gen. 6:8-9 Noah found grace.
6. God told Noah to build himself an ark.
7. Gen 6:22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.
