As part of a comprehensive environmental impact assessment, modernization of the
Schlossalm cable car in Bad Hofgastein was approved as an overall project and will be
realized in the years ahead. What is so special about it is that the “core” of the project
is concentrated over three years and also to be done as a single operation because of
the interdependencies.
New lifts and ski runs
The project “Schlossalm NEW” provides for the construction of a circulating monocable aerial ropeway up to the
Schlossalm with cabins that can hold 10 persons each in
two sections. The new multifunctional valley station, which
has been moved to the other side of the main road, allows
stress-free entry to the ski area. Changing stations when riding up the mountain is no longer necessary. The capacity
will be doubled from 1,400 to 3,000 people per hour.
The new summit station is slightly higher so that it is situated as an ideal distribution point from where the ski guest
can choose among three downhill slopes (Schlossalm, Kleine Scharte and Haitzingalm), each with an altitude difference of more than 1,200 meters. The new building replaces
the cable car and also the Haitzingalm double chair lift and
the fixed-grip Kleine Scharte quad chair lift.
More comfort and greater capacity
“The Gasteiner Bergbahnen AG project has a number of aspects,” explains Franz Schafflinger: “With the new lifts, comfort and capacities are increased, creating a new optimum
distribution point on the mountain. At the same time, parts
of the existing slopes can be reclaimed by connecting the ski
runs. “The slopes of the Schlossalm ski area will be expanded
by a total of about 20 hectares. A storage pond with 150,000
cubic meters of water capacity is being built for snowmaking
for the new and existing slopes.
Total investment of 84.8 million Euros for the
period from 2016 – 2020
An annual investment of 10 million Euros is normal for
Gasteiner Bergbahnen AG and this will continue over the
next ten years. The volume of the core investment “Schlossalm NEU” for the 2016 - 2020 period amounts to 84.8
million Euros. A detailed financing concept has been developed for this. “We can cover a quarter of the total investment from the free cash flow, and we are talking about
an amount of around 21.3 million Euros,” explain Wolfgang
Egger and Franz Schafflinger, Managing Directors of Gasteiner Bergbahnen AG. A combination of different external
financing instruments will be used to cover the remaining
63.5 million Euros. One feature is innovative crowdfunding
investment with three different variants. Read more about
this on page 2.

Mountains full of
beautiful moments
The financing concept for modernizing Schlossalm consists of profit-participating loans1, leasing financing, credit financing and a public participation model. With profit-participating loans, all shareholders of Gasteiner
Bergbahnen AG have a preferential right that offers a very attractive interest rate over a 15-year or 7-year term.
There is something for all five senses with the range of activities at the
Gasteiner Bergbahnen ski resort. The cableways strive to make skiing
a more enriched and emotional experience. The main focus is on conscious experience and a sharpening of the senses. Attractions that you
can see, touch, smell, hear and taste provide diverse ways to spend your
free time on the mountain.
3 models of public participation
The public participation model, also
referred to as crowdfunding, is a legally
subordinated loan that is processed according to the Alternative Financing
Act. An important goal in addition to
financing is long-term customer loyalty
and joint proposal preparation with the
“crowd”. Several variants are provided.
Two models (A and B) have a term of 7
years. The entire capital will be repaid
after the expiry of this period. During
these seven years, investors receive a 4%
fixed interest rate in model A, while
model B has an even better 6% fixed
rate, but this is paid back in the form
of vouchers for lift tickets. “Whoever
buys a lift ticket with us will get an even

Giant Slalom Piste with “Skimovie”
We have been using the services of Skiline for several years,
with the Skiline program integrated into the ski pass itself.
Later in the day, when you enter the number of your ski pass
online at www.skiline.cc or by using the Skiline app, you can
get a precise read-out of how many kilometers and vertical
meters you have skied. We are now adding to this system with
a Skimovie feature available at the Haitzingalm training piste
on the Schlossalm.
The third model C is also based on an interest payment with
vouchers for lift tickets. However, the term of this one is only
5 years and repayment is also done each year in the form of
vouchers – not payable at term as in the case of models A and
B. For this, there is even a 7% fixed interest rate per year (see
figure on the left). Investors can already participate starting
with a sum of only 100 Euros, while the largest investment is
5,000 Euros per person. Under certain conditions it can be
increased to 10,000 Euros per person.
Crowdfunding is done through the platform thousand times
a thousand 1000 x1000.at/skigastein. You can participate starting in December 2016.
Photos to share
Everyone who rides down the permanent giant-slalom course
is automatically filmed and a high-resolution video is created.
The system is triggered by a turnstile at the start. The video is
transmitted in real time to the server and is available to skiers
shortly after crossing the finish line. The photopoint at the
suspension bridge is being replaced by one from Skiline, and
also works with your ski pass. You can then use the Skiline app
or website to view the pictures or videos immediately, download them or share them.

Anyone who goes over the giant slalom course start line
with their lift ticket is automatically filmed. The video is
then made available to the guest online.
A profit-participating loan (participation loan) is a form of equity financing. A share in the profit is agreed upon as
compensation for granting of the loan (profit-participating = profit-dependent). The profit of a given financial year
must therefore also cover the interest payment.
Startup of the
new Schlossalm
cable car in
December 2018
Construction work in the higher areas is scheduled to start
in spring 2017. In order to be able to start immediately after
the snow melts, preliminary work will already be finished by
autumn 2016.
This will include, among other things, mitigation and compensatory measures as stipulated by the EIA notice to protect habitats for the wood grouse and black grouse.
At the same time, detailed planning is already underway and tender documents being
prepared. The largest construction measures will take place during the summer months
in 2017 and 2018. The new Schlossalm cable car will go into operation at the start of
the 2018/19 winter season.

Franz Schafflinger: “We have deliberately chosen this public
participation model as a thank you to our regular customers.”
As part of the development, four lifts will
remain (blue lines in the picture on the right),
three lifts will be removed (red lines) and two
lifts newly built (green lines).

Freeride Event
„Open Faces“
The fifth edition of the freeride series “Open Faces” will
once again serve up pure freeriding excitement in April.
But this year, it will make its first ever guest appearance in
Gastein Valley with a 2* contest.
The Open Faces Series is a qualifying tour for what is the ultimate goal for freeriders, the Freeride World Tour. From April 7th to April 9th 2017, the riders will venture out into new terrain – and the Mauskarspitze on the Schlossalm will become
an absolute freeride hotspot on what is sure to be a thrilling weekend!
Barely any other discipline in alpine skiing has grown as quickly and powerfully as
freeriding. We began investing in this target group a number of years ago and created opportunities for freeriders to learn the sport from the ground up. The safety
aspect in open terrain is exceptionally important, of course. In that regard, our two
info bases, an avalanche practice search area, as well as the ski routes in Sportgastein
and at the Schlossalm are practically ideal. The upcoming contest will now bring
even more focus to the freeride theme, and we will be able to demonstrate that
Gastein truly is a multifaceted freeride mecca.
Gastein is one of the
most popular hotspots
for freeriders.
The freeride series “Open Faces”
will take place on the Mauskarspitze
slopes from April 7th to 9th, 2017.
