Entering 8 graders have no written assignments
due. However, here are three key points to
remember:
th
1. Entering 8 graders must read The
Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian
by Sherman Alexie plus two books from this
list
2.
3.

Keep a list of everything you read and feel free to
read beyond the minimum two book requirement.
Read the required text (The Absolutely True Diary
of a Part-Time Indian) at the end of the summer,
so that it remains fresh in your memory for
September. You will be discussing and writing
about this book during the first weeks of school,
and it is essential that you be prepared.
Underline and flag significant passages from the
book, looking for key moments in character and
plot development and passages you find
especially well written and interesting as well as
any passages where you have questions.
Look up words you don't know.
Read actively.
When Andi arrives in
Paris she is angry with
her father for leaving, at
her mother for falling
apart, and grieving for
her beloved dead
brother. She finds the
diary of Alexandrine, whose words describe the terror
of the French Revolution, and becomes obsessed with
her story. During a midnight journey to the catacombs
the past suddenly becomes the terrifying present. You
will feel like you are there.
Fantasy and Sci-fi
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by L. Taylor
Although set in present day Prague,
this story transcends time and place.
Raised by chimera, Karou’s education
involved learning inhuman languages
and running errands through portals to
other lands. Her questions about who
she is lead her to a time and place
where mythology is real. Fierce and tender, this story
will enchant you. ( My favorite fantasy of the year—
Tessa)
