The Newsletter of the Wooster, Ohio Branch
Vol. 88, No. 1
August / September 2014
MESSAGE FROM NEW WOOSTER BRANCH AAUW PRESIDENT
I hope that you all had a great summer. After the winter that we had I know we were
all glad to be able to get outside in the sunshine. But it’s time to think about what
comes next and that means fall weather and another year of AAUW programming and
working together. The fall membership meeting is planned for September 4 and will be
held at Wooster High School from 3 - 5:00 p.m. We hope that an afternoon meeting
will be convenient and will encourage attendance. Plan to come to this informative
meeting and bring a potential member. Bring your electronic devices, plan to get your
“tech” questions answered, and discover new ways to be more “tech savvy.”
Your Board has been busy planning programs for the year that we hope will interest our
members and continue the work done on our scholarship program, Start Smart, and
Carol McKiernan
Expanding Your Horizons. And we will need help from all of you to make the
upcoming Used Book Sale a success. By the time you get this newsletter you will have received and hopefully
returned a questionnaire from the Board. We are looking ahead beyond this year and want to determine what
programs/activities will be of the most interest to our members. If you didn’t have the opportunity to complete it,
please feel free to contact me with your ideas.
I look forward to the coming year and working together to promote the goals of AAUW. We need all of you for that.
There is a quote from Mahatma Gandhi that I like: “What you do may seem insignificant, but it is very important that
you do it.” I hope to see you all the Membership Meeting, September 4.
AAUW WOOSTER FALL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Tech Talk, our fall general meeting arranged by Vice President Anita Greene,
will be held Thursday, September 4, from 3 - 5:00 p.m. Members will meet at the
Wooster High School computer classroom where faculty and AP students will
provide a brief program followed by questions-and-answers. Bring your laptop,
Ipad, or digital phone for this interactive session. Enter the school from the west,
pass the gym, and you will be directed to the classroom by an AAUW member.
To ensure this is a successful event, please share the digital topics you would like
covered, such as photos, connecting to library ebooks, software issues, security
and email situations, navigating your system or preferences folder, apps, or
anything else you would like. Email or mail your suggestions to Anita Greene,
[email protected] by August 25.
Please note that our banners are
flying in W ooster!
And remember to bring a guest! For those wishing to continue the evening,
members and guests will head to Longhorn Steakhouse for dinner.
JANE BUCH TO “RUN” THE OCTOBER 22 GENERAL MEETING
On Wednesday, October 22, 2014, Jane Buch will be presenting the program “Running
Away from Home . . . and Back Again.” The meeting, arranged by Clara Ann Fain, will be
held in Wesley Hall at the First Methodist Church in Wooster from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Who is Jane Buch? Jane, and her husband Tom, are retired educators from Smithville
who have traveled throughout the world enjoying commonalities in different cultures.
Jane and Tom didn’t plan to be globetrotters, but a 1981 trip to Japan where Jane was
running a marathon opened the world to them. Jane and Tom met through a church
youth group when in junior high. Jane went on to study at Ashland University, and
Tom headed to Manchester University.
A young Jane Buch....
The Buchs became avid runners when Tom’s school (Doylestown) asked him to coach its new cross country
team. The couple ran before and after school and also did weight training. In the summer they ran more
than 100 miles a week, but on average maintain runs of 70 miles per week. But it was Jane who really
excelled, and she won the 1981, ‘82, and ‘83 Bank One Marathon at Columbus. In 1985 Jane was featured
on the Wheaties cereal box.
Running led the Buchs overseas where Jane’s marathons took her to China and Japan. They have traveled
and run “all over” to Europe, Southeast Asia, the Amazon River and their favorite–Antarctica.
They are now in the process of endowing a scholarship which they hope will open the world to Manchester
University students.
Clara Ann asks that we have a good member turnout (guests can come too) to support this local woman who
has “run” the world!

JUNE OUT-AND-ABOUT TRIP TO GAMBIER, OHIO
Five members (Pam Everett, Mary Beth Henthorne, Judy Kastelan, Julie Mennes, and Mary Ann Merchant) joined
some 15,000 attendees in visiting the Schnormeier Gardens Open House in Gambier on Friday, June 6. This 75-acres,
owned by Ann and Ted Schnormeier, includes nine gardens and a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired home completed in
1994. Open in early June for their annual “free” open house, this place was breathtaking, and the lovely weather only
enhanced the visit.
Mary Ann, Julie, Mary Beth, Judy,
and Pam start their tour of
Schnormeier Gardens.
Japanese Tea House
Ann Schnormeier (owner)
answered many of Pam’s questions
concerning the gardens.
Wildlife Open Area
Quarry Water Fall
It’s hard at this time of year for Facilitator Mary Ann Merchant to plan Out-and-About trips, but one is scheduled
for Thursday, September 11, at the Massillon Museum to see Fragile Waters, a traveling exhibition featuring
119 black and white photographs by Ansel Adams, Ernest Brooks II, and Dorothy Kerper Monnelly spanning a
century while addressing the fact that water is crucial for all life on our planet. Group will also hit a spot for lunch
in the area. As usual we will meet at Odd Lots Parking to share rides/cost of gas and will depart from there at 10 a.m.
Please let Facilitator Mary Ann Merchant know if you are interested in attending this trip.
Also, Mary Ann is looking for a co-facilitator to help plan trips. Anybody interested? Not a lot of work, but ideas
for trips and planning ahead is important.
From our Outgoing Wooster Branch Co-Presidents, Linda Crouch and Judy Kastelan:
On June 19th, our final AAUW Board meeting as co-presidents, we were surprised with gifts of
appreciation on your behalf. The AAUW-logoed gifts of a silk scarf, mug, and president’s pin, and a
note log book will always be colorful reminders of the last three years. As many of you have also served
in leadership, you are well aware of the cooperation and support from members. Through you, years
of experience were available to guide us. We were energized by your kindness, enthusiasm, and vision.
Thank you for your thoughtfulness toward us.
