Chapter 5, Best Friends
Goliath and Nimba became
best friends. They hopped around
together, doing all the things that
friends do. When Goliath stopped
hiding all the time, the other animals
saw he wasn't eating too much. They
saw that he wasn't greedy or rude, so
they stopped being rude to him.
Nimba was just happy to have a
large friend like Goliath. With a big
friend like Goliath, no animal was
going to tell her to move again! She
found a nice little spot of grass to live
in near Goliath's river. Goliath the
frog and Nimba the toad were the
best of best friends.

Chapter 4, Goliath and Nimba
Dear Parents:
We are having fun as we learn to read and read to
learn. Thank you for your help and encouragement.
In this unit, your child will read a five-chapter story
to you. This fictional story is about a small African
toad and a large African frog that become the best of
friends despite their differences.
Note: If a word is underlined, it hasn’t been practiced
at school. Help your child with the word if needed.
Homework Routine
Please listen to your child read one story, twice in a
row, each day. Remember, a small amount of reading
each day is better than a lot in one day. You may wish
to make your child’s Read Aloud Story a part of your
bedtime routine.
After listening to your child read a story, ask questions
as indicated. Encourage your child to talk with you
about the story and what he or she liked. Have your
child reread the story. Then sign and date the story.
Please return this little book to school every day so we
can acknowledge your child’s efforts. When the book is
completed, it will belong to your child.
Goliath had just settled into a nap
when someone ran into him. He sat very
still and hoped the someone wouldn't see
him. Goliath had covered himself in mud
so he would look like a river rock. When
he opened an eye, there was a toad
looking closely at him. Goliath asked,
"Can I help you?"

Goliath said
that he was hiding
because the other
animals were rude
to him. Nimba said
other animals were
rude to her too.

Little Nimba was moving again.
Another big animal had just made her
leave her home. Nimba was discouraged.
She went along with big tears in her eyes.
Nimba couldn't see because of her tears,
so she ran into a rock. The rock made
a noise. Nimba was about to hop away
when she thought, "Rocks can't make
noise. This is curious." Nimba decided to
inspect the rock.

The rock opened an eye and said,
"Can I help you?"

There are two very interesting kinds
of amphibians that live in western Africa,
the Goliath frog and the Nimba toad.
Goliath frogs are the largest frogs in the
world. These frogs are very shy and like
to hide around rivers. But hiding is not
easy because they are so big. Many
people in Africa like to hunt and eat
Goliath frogs.
16
The Nimba toad lives near the
Goliath frog in the grasses of West
Africa. As people cut down the grasses
to make room for farms, Nimba toads
lose their habitat. There are not many
Nimba toads left in the world.

Everyone thought that Goliath was
greedy and rude because he was so big.
They thought he ate more breakfast,
lunch, and supper than he should. But
Goliath was really just a big frog who
needed to eat lots of food.

The other animals were angry with
Goliath. They were also afraid of him.
No one ever talked to Goliath. Goliath
became sad and shy. He hid all day
