Ellen Standley, RDH, MA, MA is a Past President of CDHA. She currently serves on the CDHA Journal
Advisory Board, Cal HYPac, and the Membership Council. Ellen is a graduate of the University of California
Dental Hygiene School in San Francisco. She holds Masters Degrees from the University of San Francisco and
California State University in Sacramento. Ellen is a retired dental hygiene educator from Sacramento City

California Dental Practice Act ( 2 CE units) Formal Course Description and Objectives
This course will provide an overview and update of the California Dental Practice Act, including the Business and
Professions Code (Sections 1600-1699;1740-1777; 1900-1966) and the related California Code of Regulations(section
1000-1099). Topics covered will include: utilization and scope of practice for auxiliaries and dentists; license renewal,
revocation, suspension and probation; continuing education requirements; acts which constitute violation of the Dental
Practice Act, including unprofessional conduct; citations and fines for violations; prescriptions; and, mandated reporting
obligations for licentiates This course meets the minimum course contents requirements for the Dental Practice Act and
includes the following areas of the California Dental Practice Act:
Business and Professions Code; Sections 1600-1699; 1740-1777 and 1900-1966.6
Penal Code: Section 11164 et.seq.(Child Abuse and Reporting)
Welfare and Institutions Code: Section 15600 etc seq ((Elder Abuse and Adult Civil Protection)
California Code of Regulations: Title 16: Section 1000-1099
Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

Discuss the basic utilization and scope of practice for dental auxiliaries and dentists.
Discuss the licensing categories for dental auxiliaries.
Discuss license renewal for licentiates in California including continuing education requirements.
Discuss probation, suspension and revocation of licenses.
Identify violations of the Dental Practice Act including unprofessional conduct.
Identify areas outside the scope of practice for dentists, hygienists and assistants in California.
Review citations and fines related to violations of the California Dental Practice Act.
Discuss the laws governing the prescription of drugs.
Review the mandated reporting statutes for dental licentiates in California for children, adults and elders; and,
give examples of reportable clinical signs.
10. Discuss the Diversion Committee and its guidelines in rehabilitating licentiates with dependency issues.
11. Review new and pending regulations affecting dental licentiates.
Kristy Menage Bernie, RDH, BS, RYT a past president of the California Dental Hygienists'
Association, is the Director of Educational Designs, a national corporate consulting company
based in San Ramon, CA and registered yoga teacher. She is an international speaker on a variety
of topics as well as a facilitator of workshops for educators in dentistry. As a frequent contributor
to national publications, she has served on numerous editorial boards, and has authored a chapter
on Oral Malodor in the latest edition of Mosby's Dental Hygiene textbook. Kristy has been
quoted in Esquire Magazine, Women's Health Magazine and interviewed by ESPN Radio.
Infection Control and the Dental Team: Reducing Your Occupational Risk 2 hour seminar ‐ This session is designed f
or licensed dental professionals to meet continuing education requirements mandated by the Dental Board of California in
the area of infection control. These regulations were updated in August of 2011 and all dental professionals are required
to be familiar with the new changes. Additionally, a review of CDC guidelines for Infection Control in Dentistry will be p
resented as well as the differences in these guidelines vs. federal/state OSHA regulations. Finally, the session will include
review of methods to control occupational transmission of blood borne pathogens, personal protective equipment and va
ccinations available to prevent disease.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Implement and follow the current Dental Board of California Infection Control Regulations
2. Site the difference between the DBC, CDC and OSHA
3. Overview of infectious diseases relating to dentistry
4. Methods to prevent transmission, post exposure protocols to maximize compliance and safety
