Daybreak Directors Service Projects Johan Visser May 9, 2013 Bentonville/Bella Vista Daybreak Rotary Club Vol. 8, Number 4, Page 1 PROGRAMS Today’s Meeting (Thursday, February 27, 2014) Program Leader Linda Winters has invited Dr. Richard Page, Superintendent of the Gravette Public School District, to speak on the proposed elementary school to be built on land on the south side of AR Hwy 340 near St. Bernard Catholic Church. The site is in western Bella Vista within the Gravette School District. Dr. Page’s talk will be a great opportunity, especially for Rotarians and guests who live in the Highlands area of Bella Vista to get answers to questions they may have. Dr. Page’s presentation will come a week after a public forum at Highlands Crossing presented by members of the Gravette School District’s Board of Education. The forum is one of several scheduled will give information on plans for the school and answer questions from residents who live in the Gravette School District. Three Bella Vista residents who live in the Gravette School District are elected members of the Board of Education. They are John Edwards, Susan Santos, and Jack Skillett. Program Coordinator Julie Storm introduced President Wilson “Scotty” Scott, Jr., who th th Tim Ensley of Youth Bridge Ali Shafer spoke enthusiastically to our club about Bella Vista Fly-Tyers. In 1972, a class was formed Public Relations for the purpose of learning to tie fishing flies. Scotty and Vice President Tom exhibited many Jean Anderson examples of typical fishing flies tied by club members. In 1975, during a trout fishing outing Rotary Foundation at Rock Bridge, Missouri, the idea of forming a club was proposed and the first official meeting was held in January, 1976. Since then, the classes have evolved into a club that has grown to Past President include much more than fly-tying. Now 130 strong, the club’s goal is to reach 200 members Ed Wheeler by year-end and Scottie invited anyone interested to join them. Meetings are Thursdays at 10 ~~~~ a.m. Members enjoy socializing within the framework of fishing, conservation, volunteerism Program Coordinator and many other outdoor and indoor activities, including volunteering with the AARP Chapter Scott Comiskey 109 Recycling Center. Fly-Tyers teach kids how to fish and offer fishing derbies twice a year, Webmaster giving prizes to anglers who catch the largest bass or sunfish. Fly-Tyers share their catches at Harris McKee an annual fish fry. The club donates money to the P.O.A. to buy and stock fish in Bella Vista Bulletin Editor Lakes. They create fish habitats and sink them in the lakes with supervision by Bella Vista Mary McKee POA Ecologist Darrell Bowman. They also create fish stations and docks. The Berniers will talk about the curriculum the Is it FAIR to all concerned? Foundation takes into schools. It encourages students to get involved in a music program and Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? motivates children to stay in school. You’ll be amazed at the statistics they will provide that underscore the importance of music as part of schools’ curricula. Several Daybreak Rotarians and spouses came to the visitation and Bill’s memorial service. Harris stopped to see Bill’s Celia at the Benton County Extension Office, where she works. She said she was glad to be busy and appreciated all our condolences. Linda said her mother is doing well after not pushing the button to summon help because she didn’t want to bother anyone else. A UPS driver rescued her. Brags Ed labeled Scott “The Seal Team 6 of Rotary. He praised all who volunteered for Books2Africa. We packed 28,000+ books! Bob A. thanked Chris for (literally) watching his back, saying “Don’t do that!” when the Prez hefted too much. Bob also lauded Ed, mastermind/ organizer of the 2-day project; the United Way’s Gifts in Kind staff; Walmart donors of 10,000 books, and drivers. Julie said Live on Stage tickets are available and exhibiting the brochure she created. She serves on that Board of Directors. Dave Schurman advises that plans are under way for our meeting on Thursday, March 13th to be held at Circle of Life Hospice at Legacy Village in Bentonville. The program will feature a presentation by Mary McKinney, CEO of Circle of Life Hospice. More information to follow. ______ President Bob and Jean Anderson attended the NWACC annual Scholarship Luncheon Wednesday, February 26th, in honor of the Daybreak Club and other organizations that have supported Scholarships at NWACC. Our Vocational Scholarship recipient, Tarah Lyons, was the featured student presenter and gave an inspiring presentation. In part through our donation, Tarah will graduate in December as a Registered Nurse. ______ Barney Tonquest, Chairman of Rotary District 6110 Grants Committee advises that he hopes to announce results of grant requests in the District by the end of next week. If awarded, our matching funds will be used to fund our contribution to the Bella Vista Library Expansion project. Vol. 8, Number 3, Page 2 District 6110 Grant Application: At their monthly meeting, the Daybreak Rotary Board of Directors approved a contribution of a little over $1400 from our Project Cap Ex fund to help purchase Chairs, Tables and Desks for literacy programs possible with the expansion of the Bella Vista Public Library. A 2-for-1 matching Grant has been applied for and, if approved, our club should receive District Funds of twice that amount to add to our club's contribution. What a Party! It’s a Fund Raiser When Everybody Wins. Music, Drinks, Dancing to Ultra Suede—All are included for $50 per person, of which $20 is tax deductible. AND each participating club gets money back for contributions! (Half of each ticket comes back to the club who sells it.) This casual benefit will be at the Pauline Whittaker Arena, 1335 W.
