It is hard to believe we are over half way through the
first 9 weeks of school! I do not send midterm
reports home, but you can view your child’s grades
at any time by accessing the Infinite Campus
program via the Internet. If you do not have a
password for the program, call the school office
(538-4180), and they can get you set up. A link to
Infinite Campus can be found on our school website. Math: We will work on learning to solve 1 and 2 step
word problems this week. A test will be given
Thursday over this skill. We will be working on
multiplication and division skills after fall break. Your child should have learned most of the basic
multiplication facts in second grade. Please have
them begin practicing those facts again. The
students should be able to recognize the basic facts
quickly. A good website for math practice is IXL. You can find a link to this and other good websites
on my class webpage.

4th Grade
The students are rockin’ it, in AR. Keep up the good
work reading and meeting your goals.
Congratulations to Avery Bryant!! She is the first
student in the class to meet their AR goal. So many
are soooo close. It’s a joy to see reading as a
competition.
We will focus on Language Skills and Spelling this
week.
In science we will continue with animal kingdoms
and look at vertebrates. The students had a blast
playing with an invertebrate. It’s funny to see the
girls pick them up and not some of the boys. A lot
of squeals during this experiment. Check out my
webpage for a link to our Science book that reviews
the chapters and vocabulary.
Our Math will continue to focus on recognizing
factors and multiples of numbers. Please practice
these skills with your child; it makes their work
easier if they know them without hesitation. They
can visit my webpage for links to math games that
will help. Don’t forget to visit the IXL link on my
webpage to practice all the skills for 4th grade.
We will continue with our national symbols unit and
focus on the Preamble to the Constitution. The
students can practice the Preamble by visiting my
webpage and watching the School House Rock video.
Mrs. Rogers
"Faster than a speeding bullet...more powerful than
a locomotive... it's Factor Ninja! Take those numbers
and "Chop It Up" to find the factors. We will have a
lot of practice finding factors and playing Prime
97. Parents, I hope that you can tell that we are
continuing our study of factors, prime and
composite numbers, and we will use Sherlock
Holmes to help us learn about "Magnifying
Multiples".
We are working our way through Living Things in
Science. By now you have probably heard about our
worm experiment. We discovered some interesting
things about how this invertebrate reacts to light
and water. We also compared invertebrates to
vertebrates by making our own playdoh examples
and testing our hypothesis of the importance of the
backbone. This week we will focus on life cycles and
systems. Last Wednesday your children made a paper quilt of
pictures and thoughts as they responded to the
9/11 attacks. It is hard to believe that they were
not even alive during this tragic time for our
nation. It is such a huge responsibility to teach them
what happened so that "We May Never Forget".
The last exciting thing happening in fourth grade is
the United State Symbol project. These are due
Monday (16th). We will be presenting these to the
class. I can't wait to see what the students have put
together that will help us learn more about our
country and patriotism.
Mrs. Wood
This week SCIENCE we will be studying about life
cycles of plants and animals. We will have our
assessment over chapter 2 on Friday. You can go to
www.macmillanmh.com to play vocabulary games
and review the chapter. Students should focus on AR this week in READING. Everyone should be at 50% of their goal at this time. Our focus this week in LANGUAGE will be the subject
and predicate part of sentences. We will also be
wrapping up our Razzle Dazzle writing skills. We
will have an assessment on Thursday.
I cannot wait to see the students’ national symbols
projects for SOCIAL STUDIES. They were due today,
so make sure they are in by Tuesday if you forgot. Our SPELLING covers the long e sound this week. We will test over our words on Friday.
We plan to continue our study on multiples and
factors in MATH. They also need to practice their
multiplication facts. We will begin our mastery tests
over the facts. Students will receive a ice cream
scoop for each set of times table that they learn.
Don’t forget to visit IXL for additional math practice
from home. Student of the Week

numbers through billions. A test is planned for
Friday. Be on the lookout for our Order of
Operations video on the webpage!

Sky. This story is a nonfiction piece about
immigrants. We will dig deep into nonfiction this
week. Our targeted skills this week are summarizing
and cause/effect. The test will be on Friday. Language: This week’s skill is over common and
proper nouns. A test will be given on Thursday. Mrs. Talbert
Art
Shape is still the theme for this week. Kindergarten
will be creating a collage using tissue and
newspaper. They will use their knowledge of both
line and shape. Students in 1st grade are finishing
their organic flower drawings. They are beginning a
geometric shape project that is so special they won't
know what it is until it is finished. Older siblings,
remember you promised not to tell until its done!. 2nd graders will be studying artist Joan Miro and his
dream like images. 3rd graders are working on a
geometric shape oil pastel drawing inspired by
Wassily Kandinsky. 4th graders have several
projects going. This week we hope to finish their
miniature easel pictures with their definition of art. They have also been writing Artist Statement to go
along with their Line Design drawings. You can
check them out on Artsonia. 5th grade is learning
how to really “see” and developing their drawing
skills. You may have heard them talking about
using their Right Brain. Kindergarten’s Artist of the week will be Pablo
Picasso. 158 works of art have been uploaded to our
Artsonia Online Art Gallery at http://
www.artsonia.com/. We are currently working
towards the goal of 300 to be eligible for a gift card
drawing from an art supply dealer. If your child
does not have an account please email me and I will
send a permission form home. http://mccweb.mccracken.kyschools.us/~dtalbert/

It's been a GREAT Non-Fiction Week @ RES! Some
students were ready for the challenge, and others
responded positively to reading outside their
comfort zones. Non-fiction weeks will continue
throughout the year to encourage student growth in
informational text reading.
Thank you, families, for attending our Back-toSchool Nights! I enjoyed sharing the AR experience
with you and am so proud of the obvious home
support of our students. Thank you for encouraging
your students and ensuring they're reading 15
minutes each night at home. Together, we can
continue RES Success!
