WEDNESDAY NIGHT ALIVE
RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED
March 29, 2017 • Spring Break
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
We will not have Dinner or Classes during
Spring Break.
MAUNDY THURSDAY
April 13, 2017 • 7:00 p.m. • Sanctuary
Sunday, April 9th, is Palm Sunday. This is the
beginning of Holy Week. The Thursday of that
week, April 13th, is Maundy Thursday. At 7:00
pm that evening, we will again hold a service
of Holy Communion and Tenebrae. With Holy
Communion we will remember the institution
of this sacrament by our Lord at the Last
Supper he shared with his disciples on that
first Maundy Thursday. In the Tenebrae
(Service of Darkness) portion of that evening
we will remember our Lord’s agony in the
Garden, his arrest, trial, scourging and finally
his crucifixion.
AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
RELAY FOR LIFE
May 12, 2017
6:00 p.m.—12:00 a.m. • JP Cain Stadium
Hartselle First will be having a Relay for Life Team this year!
We would love to have the church family involved. If you are
interested in this wonderful event where our community
comes together to fight cancer and save lives, contact Kyla
Blackwood (256) 654-1297 or Beth McHugh (256) 654-0720.
We will be selling T-shirts and raffling off a T-shirt
quilt, to raise money for FUMC TEAM! T-shirts are $15
each. Youth sizes available.
This is a very meaningful way to remember
the sacrifice made for us by our Lord Jesus
and to prepare ourselves for the glory of the
resurrection on Easter. You are encouraged to
make your plans to attend our Maundy
Thursday service.
We would like to welcome into
membership of FUMC, Kenton, Carla,
Madison (not pictured) and Britt
Gillette. They come by UMC Transfer
from Hartselle Church of Christ. Their
address is: 2200 Breeding Dr, Hartselle.

FROM THE PASTOR
We have all heard the expression “talk is cheap.” We have often felt that when it comes to the
talk of politicians talk is not only cheap, but meaningless. I enjoy watching the ABC Sunday
morning political talk show “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” (though I must admit
that George is not there at least half the time). But watching that talk show or any number of
others, I get so furious when a politician or a politician’s representative is asked a question he
or she talks a great deal, but never answers the question that was asked. Even if the person is
asked a simple “Yes” or “No” question, the answer given is anything but “Yes” or “No.” Talk is
often very, very cheap.
Jesus felt the same way about talk that was not backed up by action. One time he said
something that should give all of us pause. In Matthew 7: 21 Jesus is recorded as saying, Not
everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who
does the will of my Father in heaven. Jesus reminded the people then what he would remind
you and me today; that the true test of our relationship with him is not finally about what we
say, but rather about what we do. To be a Christian is not just to call Jesus “Lord” and
“Savior”. The trust test of a Christian is whether or not he or she lives in obedience to God’s
will.
This Sunday at CrossTies and 11:00 we will be looking at that verse from Matthew. I invite you
to one of those services. But whatever service you attend (and since this weekend marks the
beginning of Spring Break even if you are not in worship here) I encourage you to reflect
prayerfully and seriously on those words of the One we call Lord.
God bless you always!

NURTURE
Please let us know when someone who is not connected to a Sunday School Class or other small group is ill,
just home from the hospital, in an accident, is absent from their place in worship, experiences a death or life
changing event. Please call Ellen Hodgen at 256-345-6910 or Margaret Campbell at 256-773-4817.
THANK YOU
Our church has again received a letter of appreciation from Scott Selman, the Chief Financial Officer
and Treasurer of our North Alabama Annual Conference. The letter comes to express Scott’s and the
annual conference’s appreciation to this church for paying 100% of our district, conference and General
Church askings. We receive such a letter every year because every year this church remains
faithful in our support of the ministry of The United Methodist Church beyond our local congregation.
Thank you for continuing this great and vitally important tradition.
THE CREED
Beginning Wednesday, April 5, 2017 • 6:30 p.m. • Room 208
If you regularly attend one of our traditional services, or you have visited one, you have probably been
invited to recite an "affirmation of faith" or "The Apostles' Creed." You may have found yourself wondering: "Why are we doing this?", "Why are we talking about the catholic Church", "Is this really what I
believe?" During the month of April we will attempt to answer those questions and more. Our youth
minister Toby Chastain will be leading a 4week series during WNA that will dive into the history,
theology, and practice of reciting our creed. We hope you will join us!

EASTER LILIES
Thanks to you the Good Samaritan shelves have been restocked!
Our need and focus for March/April is cleaning items. You would
think these items would be covered by WIC/Food Stamps, but they
are not.
Please bring a cleaning product: bleach, vinegar,
ammonia, sponges, scratchy cloth, SOS pads, etc. One item per
family per week would be very helpful. Cleanliness is close to
Godliness!
Let’s celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior! Let’s
beautify the Sanctuary and Ministry Center in celebration by
decorating with Lilies this Easter. The Lilies will be placed in the
service in which you attend (8:45 and 11:00—Sanctuary or 9:00
Ministry). They will be available for purchase for $10.00 each.
Place an order in honor of a friend, loved one, Sunday School
teacher, for someone who deserves a big thank you or in memory
of a loved one or friend. You may want to purchase one for your
own use.

throughout the year.
Their time at Sumatanga is filled with laughter, prayer, and
praise. We are excited to invite older adults in your congregation
to come and be a part of this retreat event.
If you are interested in the Sweet Spirit Retreat, April 18-21,
