PRELUDE
Geomorphology is the science that studies the origin and development of landforms and
how those landforms combine to form landscapes. Geomorphological studies include the
quantitative analysis of landform shapes, the monitoring of surface and near-surface processes
(e.g. running water, ice, wind, etc) that shape landforms, and the characterization of landform
changes that occur in reponse to factors such as tectonic and volcanic activity, climate and
sea level change, apart from human activities. Investigations may be directed principally
towards reconstructing past processes and landform changes, towards understanding present
day processes and landform changes, or towards anticipating future processes and landform
changes.
Mankind today is facing scores of environmental problems because of overpopulation and
increasing pressure on natural resources. The Earth’s climate is predicted to change because
human activities are altering the natural environment. The effects of these are seen in the
form of accelerated soil erosion and in increased frequency of natural hazards — flood,
desertification, salinisation, siltation, landslide, shrinking glaciers, rising sea level and depleting
ground water.
Originally evolved as a sub-discipline of geography and geology, geomorphology has emerged
as an important component of Earth Sciences that has significantly contributed to the
understanding and management of a large number of environmental issues. Geologists,
hydrologists, engineers, oceanographers, environmental scientists, ecologists and archaeologists
are increasingly using geomorphological concepts and techniques to address these issues.
INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF GEOMORPHOLOGISTS /
ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONALE DES GÉOMORPHOLOGUE (IAG/AIG)
Website: www.geomorph.org
The IAG/AIG was established at the 1st International Conference on Geomorphology, held
at Manchester in 1985 with the following objectives.
·
to develop geomorphology through international co-operation;
·
to promote the study and development of geomorphology in all aspects;
·
to foster the dissemination of knowledge of geomorphology.
THE HOST ORGANISATION
The 9th International Conference of Geomorphology will be held in Vigyan Bhawan, New
Delhi during 6-11 November, 2017. The conference is hosted by the Indian Institute of
Geomorphologists (IGI). The Indian Institute of Geomorphologists (IGI) was founded in
January, 1987 by the then leading Geomorphologists of India. It has its headquarter at the
Department of Geography of the Allahabad University.
The Indian Institute of Geomorphologists (IGI) is the only organization in India, which is
purely dedicated to the research and development on Geomorphology. The Institute organises
conference and seminars every year in different universities and institutes in India. The
Institute also has the experience of organizing the International Association of
Geomorphologists (IAG) Symposium and International Workshop on Landslides in 2004.
The IGI has a large group of scientific workforce from different parts of India and publishes
an annual research journal.
