Tumwater School District
2015 – 16 School Improvement Plan
Tumwater Middle School
District strategic plan
Goal one: Teaching and learning
Increase achievement for all students by using effective instructional strategies, monitoring results and engaging
students in their own learning.
Part One: Summarize strengths and challenges
Use data representing achievement, attendance, discipline, or information from the annual CEE survey or
biannual healthy youth survey, to identify current strengths and challenges for your students. Be specific about
patterns you notice among populations within your school, such as low-income or Hispanic students.
Strengths
Supportive/Caring staff, Effective use of PLC time, Use of current instructional strategies, Student
centered schedule and curriculum, Opportunities intervention period, Positive and supportive school
culture, Strong teacher leaders
Challenges
Creating additional options for exploratory classes, Provide more extracurricular options like clubs,
Missing work/D & F Lists, Pockets of disrespect toward staff and students, Providing balance for kids
between academics and fun, Trauma-based behaviors difficult to address at school, Providing clear
communication about student conduct and discipline, Connecting students and families with
appropriate mental health support
Part Two: Identify goals for safety and communication
Develop a goal to increase communication among staff, families or the community. Then, identify how you will
improve safety at your school this year.
Communication
Effectively utilize a wide variety of options for
communication from print, mail, electronic
phone messages, blast email, print home with
students, reader board, etc. Use multiple ways to
communicate information to staff members,
parents and the community using a variety of
formats.
Safety
Communicate the importance of safety in the work
place through regular Safety Committee meetings
throughout the school year and through regular
communication with staff. Email messages during
inclement weather and make reminders to staff at
staff meetings. Create posts on our website and
use improved signage in our parking lot.
Part Three: Identify goals to address gaps
Develop two – three SMART goals to address one or more of the challenges you have identified. SMART goals
should be specific, measureable, actionable, realistic, and timebound.
Goal one
8th Grade -From September 2015 to June 2016, most students will master skills necessary to write
equations and graph linear relations as measured through formative and summative assessments in
the classroom, district benchmark assessments and SBAC assessments.
7th Grade- From September 2015 to June 2016, most students will master skills necessary to fluently
add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers mathematically and in real-world contexts measured
through formative and summative assessments, district benchmark assessments and the Smarter
Balanced Assessment.

Goal two
From September 2015 through April 2016, TMS teachers will implement common language and written
response structure across disciplines in their classes. Students will use text-based evidence and
analysis using the Jane Schaffer model for paragraph structure as measured through formative and
summative assessments, and through SBAC assessments.
Goal three
Most students will reduce the number D and F grades from January 2016 through June of 2016 as
measured by semester grades.

Part Four: Develop action plans
For each of the goals you identified in part three, describe the strategies you will use. These strategies should
connect to the gaps you have identified, rather than repeat what you already have in place at your school site.
Describe who will be responsible for completing the plan, when the strategy or action steps will begin and end
(timeline), the necessary existing and new resources to complete the plan, the measureable change you expect
to see (expected impact), and data you will collect to monitor progress.
Action plan for goal one
Action steps
Pre-Assess all students prior to Integer Unit.
Implement strategies to model operations with
integers
Differentiate instruction for students who already
have an understanding and those who are
struggling.
Students will practice skills using technology.
Use formative and summative assessments.
Attend professional development days with Bill
Feeley.
