English II Essentials Syllabus Quarter 1 Summer Reading Diagnostic Assessments - Grammar and Reading Soldier Boys Historical Document – “The Perils of Indifference” by Elie Wiesel Quarter 2 The Traveler’s Gift Research Project – Analysis of non-fiction articles to create argument. Complete MLA format will be taught. Writing will include, but not be limited to: Analytical essays, journal responses, creative assignments Quarterly Exam Quarterly Exam Quarter 3 Quarter 4 Animal Farm or Lord of the Flies Julius Caesar Emphasis on skills needed for standardized test success including close, critical reading and clear, concise writing. Historical Document: description/background on Caesar from Plutarch Quarterly Exam Final Assessment: Cumulative Assessment Targeted Grammar Skills: parts of speech, common pronoun errors, verb tense (participles and gerunds), adverbs vs. adjectives, colon, semi-colon Supplemental Literature: A Separate Peace, Arsenic and Old Lace, A Child Called It, The Hot Zone, Selected Poetry *Non-fiction articles will be thematically paired with literature throughout the year.
