Along with staff, I will work hard to continue the legacy of success established at SMS by building strong relationships with parents, students, staff,
and community partners. We will focus on character education initiatives, 21st
Century skills, fostering a nurturing safe environment for children, use of data
to inform instruction, consistent implementation of proven instructional strategies to increase students’ achievement, and providing exciting and challenging enrichment opportunities for all students.
I anticipate a most successful year as my team and I support the academic, social, and emotional growth of your child here at Southern Middle School.
During the course of the year, it is my hope that we will work together to provide the students of SMS the best possible opportunities in preparing them to
be world class citizens ready to master the challenges of the 21st Century with
a solid foundation created here at our school. As Principal, my door is always
open and I welcome your input. Please feel free to stop in or call to make an
appointment to discuss any concerns, suggestions, or ideas to help make this
the best year yet!
In keeping with our policy of open communication, we invite you to join us
on Twitter @SouthernMSAACPS or follow us on Facebook as Southern Middle School AACPS. We continue to expand our website also, so you can get
information there at aacps.org - School links – Middle Schools – Southern
Middle.
In partnership,
Kimberly Winterbottom
Principal
REMINDER:
All Parents & Visitors must have a government issued
ID in hand, upon entrance to our building. NO exceptions!
Thank you for helping keep Southern Middle School safe.
HOLIDAY AND BIRTHDAY PROTOCOL
Birthdays and holidays are special to all of us. At Southern Middle School we believe that
birthdays and holidays are to be celebrated at home with family and friends. Sometimes middle school students become disruptive over the excitement of another student’s birthday or a
holiday. To minimize any disruption, particularly in the cafeteria and on our buses, we have
established the following guidelines:
No balloons. No birthday snacks.
No singing of “Happy Birthday” in the cafeteria.
No gifts or fruit baskets.
This is also stated in the student’s agenda book on page 2.
Thank you !
Forgotten Items: We all know how hectic mornings can be and sometimes school items
are mistakenly left at home. It is our policy at Southern Middle School to keep interruptions to classroom instruction at a minimum. Forgotten lunch, money, homework, projects, gym clothes, etc. may be brought to the school office but will only be given to your
student during their lunch time. Students are also allowed to retrieve items between classes. The office will not call into the classroom unless there is an emergency. Thank you
in advance for your cooperation.
Early Dismissals: If your student has an appointment during school hours, please send a
note to the main office prior to lst period. The student will be given a pass to be dismissed from class and waiting for you in the main office. This minimizes calling into the
classroom and interruptions to instruction time. Thank you.

On Tuesday, September 30, 2014, your child will bring home a Federal Impact Aid Survey form. Please assist us by filling out the information requested on the form and return it to Anne Arundel County Public Schools in the self-addressed, stamped envelope
provided.
The U.S. Department of Education has requested a separate survey form for each child and
each survey form must be signed and dated by the Parent/Guardian. If needed, additional
forms may be obtained from the school or downloaded from the AACPS website
(www.aacps.org) under Students, Forms. The Federal Impact Aid Survey form for 2014-15
will be available to download on September 30, 2014. We will also be using our Connect-Ed
Automated Telephone Notification System to remind everyone about the significance of
completing and returning this survey. The school system receives approximately $2 million
in funding from the Federal government in support of our children after the forms are processed.
Thank you in advance for your support and assistance. Should you have any questions regarding this information, please contact Ms. Donna Barker at 410-222-5200.

Emergency Information
Each year we must ask parents to provide us with current
information. Your child received an emergency card on the
first day of school. We must have emergency daytime
phone numbers for parents. We also need to know if there
are other adults who have permission to pick up your child
at school. All adults must have a Photo ID to pick up a
child. Please notify the guidance office of changes in the
emergency information as it occurs.
Early Dismissals
To minimize disruption to classrooms, when your student
needs to be dismissed early from school for an appointment, we ask that your student bring a note to the main office in the morning. The office will issue a early dismissal
pass to the student.
Activity Bus Service
On Tuesday and Thursday, middle school activity bus
service will be available.
Activity buses do not operate:
x on days immediately prior to a date when schools are
closed for both students and teachers.
x on scheduled (or unscheduled) early closing dates.
x during the winter and spring secondary semester testing weeks.
x on any day that a weather related early closing is implemented.
Visitor Security System
The safety of all students and staff in Anne Arundel County Public
Schools is of utmost importance to all of us. When you visit
our school, you will be asked to present a government
-issued photo ID to a staff person in the school office.
Personal Electronic Communication
Devices by Student
Prohibitions
x
Students are prohibited from using, activating or
displaying personal electronic communication devices on school property or at school-sponsored
activities during the school day unless approved
by the school principal for a specific educational
and/or administrative purpose.
x
Students are prohibited from using, activating or
displaying personal electronic devices at all times
while riding to and from school or schoolsponsored activities on a school bus or schoolchartered vehicle.
x
Students are prohibited from using, activating or
displaying personal electronic devices during instructional programs that extend beyond the
school day.
The Anne Arundel County Public Schools is not responsible for the loss, theft, damage or destruction of
any personal electronic communication device. Students found to be in violation of this policy are subject
to action in accordance with school system disciplinary procedures and the accompanying administrative
regulations.
This card will be scanned and the following information will be collected: your photo, your name, and your date of birth. This information will be utilized to check you in, create an ID badge, and
compare your information against sexual offender databases
throughout the country. If your name appears on any of the lists or
you refuse to allow the use of your ID, you will not be allowed
access to the school. On future visits to a school, in which
you have previously registered, you will only be asked
to show your ID, as your name will be selected from an existing
list of previous visitors. You will also be asked to check out with
the office upon leaving the school so that we know you are no longer in the building. You will be required to check into the system
even if you are only coming to school to pick up your child. The
information collected will not be shared outside of the school and is
kept on a secure server. Your assistance in keeping our students safe
Cameras in the school
Southern Middle School is equipped with a video camera system. It covers selected interior and exterior public portions
of the building and grounds. It is NOT monitored constantly,
but it is monitored during emergency situations. During certain events, when the safety or security of students may be in
question, authorized personnel from local, state, or federal
police or fire emergency unit may be given access to view
images projected on the camera system. If you have any questions about the system, you should call School Security at
(410) 222-5083.
