We will focus on character education initiatives, 21st Century skills, fostering a nurturing safe environment for children, use of data to inform instruction, consistent implementation of proven instructional strategies to increase students’ achievement, and providing exciting and challenging enrichment opportunities for all students. I anticipate a most successful year as my team and I support the academic, social, and emotional growth of your child here at Southern Middle School. During the course of the year, it is my hope that we will work together to provide the students of SMS the best possible opportunities in preparing them to be world class citizens ready to master the challenges of the 21st Century with a solid foundation created here at our school. As Principal, my door is always open and I welcome your input. Please feel free to stop in or call to make an appointment to discuss any concerns, suggestions, or ideas to help make this the best year yet! In keeping with our policy of open communication, we invite you to join us on Twitter @SouthernMSAACPS or follow us on Facebook as Southern Middle School AACPS. Thank you for helping keep Southern Middle School safe. HOLIDAY AND BIRTHDAY PROTOCOL Birthdays and holidays are special to all of us. At Southern Middle School we believe that birthdays and holidays are to be celebrated at home with family and friends. Sometimes middle school students become disruptive over the excitement of another student’s birthday or a holiday. To minimize any disruption, particularly in the cafeteria and on our buses, we have established the following guidelines: No balloons. No birthday snacks. No singing of “Happy Birthday” in the cafeteria. No gifts or fruit baskets. This is also stated in the student’s agenda book on page 2. Thank you ! Forgotten Items: We all know how hectic mornings can be and sometimes school items are mistakenly left at home. It is our policy at Southern Middle School to keep interruptions to classroom instruction at a minimum. Forgotten lunch, money, homework, projects, gym clothes, etc. may be brought to the school office but will only be given to your student during their lunch time. Students are also allowed to retrieve items between classes. The office will not call into the classroom unless there is an emergency. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Early Dismissals: If your student has an appointment during school hours, please send a note to the main office prior to lst period. The student will be given a pass to be dismissed from class and waiting for you in the main office. This minimizes calling into the classroom and interruptions to instruction time. Thank you. 2 School Meal Prices School Year 2014-2015 Our Southern Middle School newsletter is electronic!!! Please be sure the Guidance/ Main Office has a current email address for your family. The school system receives approximately $2 million in funding from the Federal government in support of our children after the forms are processed. Thank you in advance for your support and assistance. Should you have any questions regarding this information, please contact Ms. Donna Barker at 410-222-5200. 3 Emergency Information Each year we must ask parents to provide us with current information. On future visits to a school, in which you have previously registered, you will only be asked to show your ID, as your name will be selected from an existing list of previous visitors.
