Ionic Reaction/Double Replacement Reaction Lab Object: Conduct initial portion of lab where students identify which reactants become precipitates and which have no reaction. They will then choose two precipitates from each set and identify the precipitate from the reaction. 1. Number above each molecular formula: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 at the top of each chart/set. 2. Be precise as you conduct the lab portion of this exercise. Label the precipitate: PPT and the nonreactant: NR. Do not move to the next test until you have finished each one. One student should be recording and the other should be conducting the test. 3. Drop and record with each well test. 4. If you are in doubt about whether you have a precipitate, place the test plate over white paper. 5. Indications of a Precipitate: a. “Floatees” b. Dramatic color changes c. Immediate or delayed cloudiness or murkiness d. A solid that forms from the liquid solution indicating a chemical reaction e. Distinctive odor f. Bubbles or gas appear g. Heat is produced h. Volume changes i. Any other distinctive chemical or physical property change 6. Mark out the reaction going across the top row. Then mark out the last five reactions in the second row. Then the last four in the third row, etc. See the diagram and the teacher explanation/demo. Repeat with the other two sets. 7. Once the experiment is complete, choose two reactions that were precipitates from each set. Write the two reactants in the formula and the two products. This is a double replacement reaction. 8. Use the ion chart to find the charges and subscripts for the products side of the equations. 9. Use the solubility chart to figure out which product was the precipitate in each of the reactions.
