Did You Know?
Did you know that May is a
month full of many bizarre
American Holidays? Some of these
days seem practical while others
are down right odd. What ties
many of these days together is that
many of them can be seen as
ridiculous.
On May 10th we are to
celebrate “Clean Up Your Room
Day.” I am guessing that a mother
created this day. What do you
think? Also on May 26th we are to
celebrate “Grey Day.” Seriously “Grey Day!” I am not quite sure
what we are supposed to do on
“Grey Day.”
I think one of the more
enjoyable days in May is the 17th,
which is “Pack Rat Day.” After
Spring Cleaning in April, we can
fill those closets and attics back up
on May 17th. I know the Irish
would be excited to know that
May 13th is “Leprechaun Day.”
And don’t forget to celebrate the
all-important “Lumpy Rug Day”
on May 3rd. Yes, the lumpy rug
gets a day all to itself. My favorite
day in May is the 11th because it
is “Eat What You Want Day!”
However, it is a little peculiar that
May 11th is also “Twilight Zone
Day.”
So as you can see May is
chockfull of interesting yet bizarre
days. These celebrations will keep
us busy all month. So don’t forget
“Frog Jumping Jubilee Day” on
May 19th or “My Bucket’s Got a
Hole in it Day” on May 30th, or
you will miss all of the fun.
Have a fun-filled and wacky
May!

Just Doing Her Job?
In addition to the demanding
duties of motherhood, our moms
worked second jobs as
homemakers, accountants,
teachers, scientists, writers, artists,
chefs and more. If an award were
to be given for Best Mother Ever,
millions of women would be
recognized because each mother
excels in her own way. However,
every last one would probably
decline the award, saying that she
was glad to do whatever she could
to give her children the world. The
team at our community would
like to thank our mothers for their
hard work and devotion. We hope
your Mother’s Day holds all the
happiness (and rest) that you
deserve!
5 Things About: The
Kentucky Derby
• The annual race takes place
the first Saturday in May in
Louisville, Ky.
• It’s called “the most exciting
two minutes in sports.”
• A total of 20 thoroughbreds
get a spot at Churchill
Downs’ starting gate.
• Horses race 1.25 miles
around the track to the finish
line.
• More than 400 roses are used
to create the blanket of roses
that is draped around the
winner.

About
Memorable Melody:
‘Pomp and Circumstance’
For more than a century, school
graduates have walked into the
future to the tune of Edward
Elgar’s famous march “Pomp and
Circumstance.” The piece, which
has an air of both ceremony and
sentiment, was written in 1901 for
the coronation of England’s King
Edward VII. It first became
associated with graduations
beginning in 1905, when it was
played at Yale University’s
commencement ceremony, where
Elgar was awarded an honorary
degree.

Vitamin B Fails in
Clinical Trial
Therapeutic hopes for vitamin
B revolved around its ability to
reduce levels of the amino acid
homocysteine, which is often
found in higher amounts in the
blood of Alzheimer’s disease (AD)
patients. Scientists had theorized
that reducing homocysteine levels
may prevent the cognitive decline
associated with AD.
Researchers tested this theory in
a recent study involving 409
participants. Individuals who
received high doses of vitamins B6
and B12, as well as folic acid, did
no better on cognitive tests than
participants who received a
placebo. In fact, participants who
received the B regimen suffered
greater incidences of depression
than their placebo-receiving
counterparts.
Despite the disappointing trial
results, researchers haven’t
abandoned therapeutic hopes for
vitamin B. Study authors noted
that while vitamin B offered no
protection against cognitive
decline, the vitamin hasn’t yet
been tested to determine whether,
if administered earlier in life to
reduce homocysteine levels, it can
help delay the onset of AD
symptoms.

“The Daffodils” by
William Wordsworth
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales
and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils,
beside the lake, beneath
the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in
the breeze.
Continuous as the stars
that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending
line
Along the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly
dance.
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure
fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
