One of a number of cannons requested for delivery to various California GAR Posts and towns in a bill passed by Congressman John Raker. The cannons were
probably delivered to Auburn in late 1912. Associated with Belmont Post, No. 101, G.A.R., based in Auburn.
Excerpt from the Sixty-second Congress, Sess. II, Chapter 384, August 24, 1912 [H.R. 24458]:
CHAP. 384. – An Act Authorizing the Secretary of War, in his discretion, to deliver to certain cities and towns condemned bronze or brass cannon, with their
carriages and outfit of cannon balls, and so forth. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress
assembled,
“To the city of Auburn, California, two condemned twelve-pound bronze cannon for use at Belmont Post, Numbered One hundred and one, Grand Army of the
Republic, the same to be subject at all times to the order of the Secretary of War.”
