The Healthaware Challenge addresses health and wellbeing issues by encouraging young people to
participate in and develop their own health and wellbeing projects – this leads to accreditation through
Youth Achievement Awards or ASDAN. For more information visit:
http://www.ukyouth.org/whatwedo/Programmes/YAA/healthandwellbeing.htm
The National Youth Agency (NYA) has developed a set of online learning materials for practitioners
grouped around the 4 themes of Healthy Lifestyle, Healthy Relationships & Sex, Mental & Emotional
Wellbeing and Substance Use. Registration is free and the online learning activities are extensive. You can
find these at the health-e website http://www.healthelearning.org.uk/course/view/1
Truetube http://www.truetube.co.uk/ has a range of videos on PSHE subjects and software to edit your
own film and upload your own media to the site. Please screen all videos before use to decide whether
content is appropriate for the young people you’re working with.
The development pack will expand on the starter pack’s themes as follows:
Eat well – healthy body image (looking at eating disorders, pressures on young people to conform to
certain images))
Active lifestyle – lifestyle MOT (including self examination and sex & relationships)
Minimise toxins – alcohol
Reduce stress – build self esteem

Introduction
CURRICULUM CHAPTERS: 10 (Healthy Living), 16 (Mental Health), 23 (Sex & Relationships)
NOTE FOR PRACTITIONERS: As this pack deals with sensitive issues like body image and sexual health,
you may wish to set guidelines with young people. These should cover:
Good body

Lifestyle
MOT
Minimise
toxins
Self
esteem
RESPECT – paying attention to someone who is speaking
CONFIDENTIALITY – what is said in the room stays in the room (NOTE: make sure that young people
understand that this includes not posting on Facebook/personal blogs or sending texts)
PRIVACY – when discussing situations & issues, other people’s privacy will be respected e.g. Refer to
‘person A’ rather than ‘my brother’
RIGHT TO REFUSE – you have the right not to participate
NON JUDGEMENTAL APPROACH – we can all agree to disagree without getting personal
OWNERSHIP – opinions should be expressed in the first person ‘I think...’
SENSITIVITY TO DIVERSITY – Awareness of and sensitivity to other people’s ethnic background, sexual
orientation etc.
SUPPORT & ACCEPTANCE – it’s OK to feel uncomfortable when talking about sensitive subjects and
anyone in the group can seek a one to one if necessary
HAVE A GOOD TIME! – however sensitive the issue, creating a safe space is about being somewhere that
you can enjoy and have fun

RECORDING YOUNG PEOPLE’S PROGRESSION
If you intend to use the Healthy Living starter and development packs to deliver accredited outcomes
through a Youth Achievement Award Challenge, YAA has some excellent resources to help you chart
young people’s progression and build their portfolios.
GET GOING
This resource provides tips and information on producing a Personal Development Plan. The resource,
which has been produced by Daron Oram is written in the style of a workbook so young people can build
it up as they progress through. Individual exercises like the Blob Tree are also great stand alone activities
to chart young people’s progression from starter through development pack.
http://www.ukyouth.org:81/Resources/UK%20Youth/Get%20Going.pdf
PORTFOLIO BUILDING TOOLKIT
The Toolkit is a set of worksheets to help young people collect evidence and build portfolios - these
sheets are produced in word and a picture/symbols format and are therefore suitable for use with a wide
range of abilities.

PERSONAL SCAVENGER HUNT: ask the group to find about their person/in their bag these items: something
you’ve had a long time, something that you’re proud of, something that reveals a lot about you. Go round
the group and discuss the items you’ve found – would you get rid of them or change them in any way? Do
you like what these items say about you or are there things you would like to change about yourself?
AGREE/DISAGREE: designate a space or object for ‘agree’ and ‘disagree’. Now ask the following questions
and ask the group to agree/disagree: a) people have more fun when they drink or take drugs (can make
people depressed and aggressive) b) you can die from second-hand smoke (for every 8 smokers who die, 1
non smoker dies from second-hand smoke) c) It’s healthy to drink wine (for adults, but toxic for young
people) d) people smoked pot in the 60s and turned out OK (the drug we have today is about 10 times
stronger than it was then). Discuss each statement and young people’s response to it.
POSITIVE FEEDBACK: Pin a sheet of A4 to each young person’s back. Now ask each young person to write
something positive on everyone else’s sheet, then unpin and give young people a few minutes to read
through the comments that have been made. How did this make them feel? Did they agree with the
comments? Were they surprised by any of the comments? Did this positive feedback make them think
about themselves in a different way?

Visit Truetube’s body & health video resources – choose a video and discuss the issues it raises
http://www.truetube.co.uk/media.php?do=issues&issueid=29
Visit Dove’s Campaign for Real Beauty website and watch the videos ‘Onslaught’ and ‘Evolution’
http://www.campaignforrealbeauty.co.uk/#/features/videos/ Discuss the issues raised – why did Dove
start their campaign? Think about the images of beauty that we see and what beauty means to you
personally. What is beauty? And what really makes somebody beautiful?
Marilyn Monroe is considered the archetypal sex symbol and one of the most beautiful women ever –
and she was a size 16. If she was alive today would she become a big star? Or would she be expected
to diet and conform to a certain body image? Think about the fact that the average model is 5 foot 10
inches and weighs 7 stones, whilst the average woman is 5 foot 4 inches and weighs 11 ½ stone.
Do mothers and fathers set the tone in the home for their children's positive or negative body image
or is it an issue of peer pressure?
Should the fashion industry accept more responsibility for the body imagery they use and the
messages they direct at women and girls? If yes, why and how? Read the article on size zero models
http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23367018-pressure-mounts-for-ban-on-zero-sizemodels.do Should they be banned? If so, for what reasons?
Do you think that gender stereotypes can affect body image? Do we expect men to be muscular and
women small and dainty? What do you think of the findings in the article?

Provide some magazines with adverts featuring people. Imagine you’re an alien who has never seen a
human being before – what would you say about the creatures who live on earth based on the images
in magazine adverts (e.g. Humans are always smiling, humans live on beaches etc). You could put
together a composite man and woman from magazine ads.

ADVERTISING QUESTIONNAIRE: Find some advertising images – make sure you include some obviously
airbrushed images and images of ‘healthy’ people doing ‘unhealthy’ things (e.g. Thin people eating junk
food). Split the group into smaller groups and give them 2 adverts to analyse, using the questionnaire
below. Summarise each group’s findings – highlight points such as the way ‘healthy’ people are often
seen doing ‘unhealthy’ things, how advertisers want you to think that underweight models using make
up (or being airbrushed) look good without help and how most models in ads are thin and having fun.
Challenge the advertising myths by asking the group if they think there is an ideal body type? Point out
that, whatever our body type, we need to maintain a healthy weight and be physically fit.
BODY IMAGE INVENTORY: hand out the body inventory quiz and ask everybody to complete it. Now put
the group into pairs and ask them to discuss their results, then share with the larger group. The inventory
can be scored as follows:
0=congratulations, you have a healthy body image!
0-11=not bad, could use some improvement
11-20=some issues, get a handle on them before they get out of hand
21+=danger zone – your body image needs some work
To deal with negative thinking:
• Ask young people to imagine themselves on a scale of good to bad. Now ask them to position
someone ‘evil’ and someone ‘good’ at either end of the same scale e.g. Hitler/Father Christmas
• Ask young people what’s the main thing that would make them liked/happy. Now ask them to
diminish this overgeneralisation by introducing other reasons and quantifying how important they are
(try drawing a pie chart, for example)
BODY IMAGE MYTHS QUIZ: Take the quiz below and discuss the results – were the group surprised at
what was true and what was false?

MAP IT: give each young person a piece of paper and ask them to draw something representing
themselves in the middle (this could be their personal symbol from the self esteem activities). Now ask
them to map in all the other people they come into contact with and draw connections between them
e.g. their parents may connect to a boyfriend/girlfriend’s parents if they’re friends. Use symbols, colours,
words, lines or anything else to show the nature of their feelings between you and the people in your
relationships map. What have members of the group discovered about their relationships? What could
they change or improve and how? As an extension to this and the other activities below, complete the
Wheel of Life.
MYTHS & FACTS GAME: divide the group into 2 teams. Tell them they will each draw a statement from a
container and they must decide between them whether the statement is a myth or a fact (explain that
myths refer to untrue information passed around as fact). If they identify whether the statement is myth
or fact correctly they score 1 point. If they can say why it’s a myth or fact they gain a bonus point. During
the plenary, ask questions like why young people would take those risks, and how would they stop their
peers from taking risks with their sexual health. [Cut up the statements below and keep the factsheet for
answers)
CONTRACEPTION ROLE PLAY: Mark a series of cards with the words ‘condom’ ‘condom + other
contraceptive method’ ‘abstinence’ ‘none at all’. Explain what each of the cards means (‘abstinence’ is not
having sex at all, ‘none at all’ means sex without contraception). Now split the group into pairs and ask
one of the pair to choose a card at random. Now ask the pairs to role play a situation where they may be
discussing contraception (this doesn’t have to be as a couple, it could be friends asking for advice etc.).
Ask the one with the card to try and convince their partner that their method is the best. Watch the role
plays and discuss which ones were most convincing and why.

PARODY ADS: Ask the group to think about alcohol advertising they’ve seen on TV/hoardings. Discuss the
themes in the ads – what do you notice about the way alcohol is portrayed? Split the group into several
smaller groups and ask them to develop their own ads using the following ideas: DRINKING IS RISK FREE,
IT’S GOOD TO DRINK EVERY DAY, DRINKING IS A MAGIC POTION THAT CAN TRANSFORM YOU, SPORTS &
ALCOHOL GO TOGETHER. Ask young people to think about the way that alcohol is portrayed as something
glamorous, something that makes you popular, that it’s ok to do every day, that makes life interesting and
that you must do when you’re involved in certain activities e.g. watching sport. Ask the ads to show the
real stories behind the myths – the risks of drinking (e.g. Having unprotected sex), the problem behaviours
associated with drinking (e.g. Alcoholism, the consequences of drinking (e.g. Violence, drink driving), the
health factors (e.g. Associating something with health risks with a healthy activity). Watch the ads and
discuss how effective they are.
WHAT’S IN THE BAG: print out the sheet below – ask young people to draw what they think they might
find in the bag. Remind them there are no right or wrong answers and encourage them to think of
everything that could be found in a bag of drugs e.g. Prescription drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. Compare
the different sheets – are all drugs bad for you or can some be beneficial? Medicines are drugs but not all
drugs are medicines. Did anyone include tobacco or alcohol in the bag? If not why not? For follow on
activities see http://www.colchester-drug-alcohol.org.uk/downloads/drug_ed.pdf
SUBSTANCE USE QUIZ: if you make the decision to use a substance, is it better to be informed about it, or
just dive straight in? Can you decide which of these statements are fact or fiction? (Can also be used to
play the Myth or Fact game – see Lifestyle MOT activities)
SUBSTANCE USE WORDSEARCH: can you find these substances – and the words associated with their use
– in the grid?

One day you’re walking down the street and you see a bag on the pavement. You can’t see
anyone around who might have dropped it, so you pick it up and look inside and find it’s full of
drugs...Draw/write the names of what you find in the bag in the picture below. What did you do
next? Go to the police? Talk to an adult?

Watch the Dove video on girl’s self esteem issues http://vodpod.com/watch/776824-dove-agirls-self-esteem (PLEASE SCREEN VIDEOS BEFORE USE). Discuss the issues it raises
with the group – are they issues they face or have come across?
Eleanor Roosevelt said "Nobody can make you feel inferior without your permission." Have a
group discussion about this quote. What does it mean? How true is it? Can you think of
cases where it might not be true? In what kinds of situations would this quote be most useful
to remember?
Establish a Self Esteem Charter – brainstorm the things that build high self esteem
(achievement, support from friends & family, respect, setting goals etc) and ask the group to
turn them into personal statements ‘I will...’ ‘I deserve....’ Write the charter up on flip chart
paper and display on the wall or ask young people to design a poster.
Ask the group what they think their individual strengths and achievements are – talk about
how these are linked to building good self esteem. Ask each member of the group to design
a symbol that sums up the qualities and strengths they have, then present them to the group
and discuss (remember this is an opportunity for celebration not for criticism – encourage
discussion on the lines of ‘I think he/she should also have included X as they’re very good at
it’). As an extension activity, each young person could put the symbol on a poster/badge/Tshirt
Take one of the following quizzes:
http://www.selfesteemawareness.com/selfesteem_quiz.htm
http://discoveryhealth.queendom.com/questions/self_esteem_abridged_1.html
Discuss the results with the group – what strategies can you use to raise self esteem (see
top 10 websites for useful information)?

CIRCLE TIME: Start incorporating circle time into group sessions. Ask the group to sit on the floor in a circle and ask
everyone to introduce themselves (you could also ask everyone to share something about themselves or their day at
this point). Now start a round by introducing a phrase and incorporating it as part of a sentence e.g. ‘today I’m
feeling...excited because I’m going to a wedding tomorrow’. Other good starters include ‘I wish I was with (a certain
person)/in (a certain place)’....’, ‘What makes me laugh is...’, ‘My goal for today is....’. If anyone makes a personal
disclosure, follow up at an appropriate time and place.
Establish some ground rules with the group – see introduction for ideas.
LOVE BOMBING: Ask everyone to write their name on a piece of paper and put them in a hat (or similar receptacle).
Draw names at random and ask the person whose name you have drawn to go out of the room. Now ask everyone
in the room to think of the best thing they can say about that person. Then ask the person to come back into the
room and get everybody to pay their compliments. Make sure you allow enough time for everyone to have a go and
give them the opportunity to feedback on how they feel – what has surprised them? What were they unaware of?
What made them feel best?
GOOD ADVICE: Ask the group to imagine that they will one day be parents. Ask them to think about the advice they
would give their child when they reach the same age that the group are now. Ask them to tell the child what makes
them feel bad about themselves and good about themselves and to give them advice about having good self
esteem. This can be written as a letter, or tape recorded, even produced in the form of a rap or poem.
THE POWER OF PERSUASION: ask everyone to bring in examples of ads aimed at young people. Ask each young
person to prepare a presentation about their ad that talks about the following – the appeal of the ad, the
assumptions the ad makes about young people, if the ad is intended to make the viewer feel good or bad about
themselves, does the ad appeal to young people with high self esteem or low self esteem?
ACHIEVEMENT: Self esteem is linked very closely to personal achievement (see http://www.self-esteeminternational.org/content/5-research.htm) so working with young people towards recorded and accredited
outcomes – and giving young people ownership of those achievements – is an excellent way of embedding and
building self esteem into every session.

The Bucket
Good body

Self esteem has been compared to a bucket of water – it starts out full when we’re born, but as
soon as we develop negative beliefs about ourselves, we poke holes in the bucket and the self
esteem starts to trickle out. Which of these things would you put in the bucket? And which of
them make holes?
