Problem: Are Double Stuf Oreos really double stuffed? Hypothesis

Problem: Are Double Stuf Oreos really double stuffed?
Hypothesis: (If, then, because)
Procedure:
1. Obtain 1 regular Oreo cookie and 1 Double Stuf Oreo cookie.
2. Weigh each cookie individually and record data to the nearest hundredth of a gram (0.XX)
3. Measure the height and diameter of just the creme filling of a regular Oreo and record data to
the nearest tenth of a centimeter. Repeat Double Stuf cookie.
4. Find the volume of each cookie using this formula:
volume = height x πr2
πr2 = 3.14 x (½ x diameter)2
5. Carefully remove the chocolate wafers of one regular cookie and measure the diameter of the
crème filling. Record data.
6. Find the mass of both the wafers.
7. Record data to the nearest hundredth of a gram (0.XX). Repeat for Double Stuf cookie.
8. Find the mass of crème.
9. Record data to the nearest hundredth of a gram (0.XX). Repeat for Double Stuf cookie.
10. Take a 50 mL graduated cylinder and pour 20 mL of water into it.
11. Place the regular Oreo creme-filling into the water (graduated cylinder). The filling may
crumble, or need to be broken up to fit in the cylinder.
12. Measure and record the displacement.
13. Repeat steps 8 through 10 for the Double Stuf creme-filling.
14. Clean up and wash your hands.

Analysis:
1. Class average of the masses and volume of regular Oreo cookies:
Regular Oreo
Measurement
Mass of whole cookie (g)
Mass of chocolate wafers (g)
Mass of creme (g)
Volume of creme (cm3 )
2. Class average of the masses and volume of Double Stuf cookies:
Double Stuf Oreo
Measurement
Mass of whole cookie (g)
Mass of chocolate wafers (g)
Mass of creme (g)
Volume of creme (cm3 )
3. Class average of the displacements of cookies. (volume of the crème)
Regular displacement: _____________mL Double Stuf displacement: ____________mL
Conclusion:
1. Based on the collected data, are Double Stuf Oreos double stuffed? Use data and hypothesis to
support your answer.
2. How did the volume (Table 1) compare to the displacement (Table 2)? Explain.
3. Which method of measuring volume (ruler or displacement) was most efficient for this
experiment? Why?
Recommendation:
1. How could you improve this lab for next time?
2. Did any experimental errors occur during this lab activity? If so, how could the errors be
eliminated for next time?
