Board

This
is
no
ordinary
time.
It
is
a
time
of
significant
uncertainty,
and
our
community
is
facing
challenges
many
of
us
have
not
seen
in
our
lifetimes.
But
challenges
have
a
way
of
bringing
things
into
perspective.
They
have
a
way
of
making
us
conscious
of
what
is
truly
important;
of
helping
us
focus
on
the
basics.
Despite
the
discouraging
economic
climate,
we
are
fortunate
to
report
that
in
2008
the
Kalamazoo
Community
Foundation
recorded
the
second
highest
gifting
year
in
its
84‐year
history,
with
gifts
totaling
more
than
$18.7
million.
In
addition,
we
and
our
donor
partners—individuals,
families
and
organizations
that
established
or
contributed
to
permanent
funds
at
the
Community
Foundation—
invested
more
than
$17.3
million
in
the
community.
An
important
portion
of
that
total,
$3.6
million,
came
from
the
Community
Foundation’s
unrestricted
resources.
Unrestricted
resources
are
vital
to
the
Community
Foundation’s
work
because
they
give
our
board
of
trustees
the
flexibility
required
to
address
the
community’s
increasing
and
changing
needs.
While
this
support
of
nonprofit
organizations
was
comparable
to
2007
levels,
we
can
report
an
increase
in
the
number
of
grant
applications
received
and
in
the
dollars
requested—truly
a
sign
of
the
times.
We,
at
the
Community
Foundation,
are
fully
cognizant
of
our
responsibility
to
steward
not
only
assets
and
funds,
but
also
the
philanthropic
legacies
of
the
donors
who
wished
to
make
the
greater
Kalamazoo
area
a
better
place.
We
will,
as
we
have
since
the
Community
Foundation
was
established
in
1925,
continue
to
fulfill
the
philanthropic
intentions
of
our
donors
and
apply
our
knowledge
of
community
needs
in
meaningful
ways.
The
people
of
the
greater
Kalamazoo
area
are
facing
formidable
challenges.
But
we,
as
a
community,
are
hopeful
and
united
in
our
focus
and
determination
to
build
a
stronger,
healthier,
more
vibrant
community.
Throughout
2009,
it
will
be
important
for
us
all
to
remain
optimistic,
to
focus
on
the
basics,
and
to
call
upon
our
collective
compassion
and
generosity
to
enhance
the
spirit
of
community
and
quality
of
life
for
all
of
the
people
who
call
this
exceptional
community
home.

The

operates
six

five

Even
so,
demand
is
outstripping

“When

“Today,

What
is
even
more
astonishing
is
on

a

says

Youth
Opportunities
Unlimited
has
been
working
to
provide
answers
to
those
questions
through
its
Summer
Youth
Employment
Program.
Since
2005,
hundreds
of
Kalamazoo
teens
have
developed
critical
employment
skills
through
the
program,
which
puts
them
to
work
in
community
service
projects
throughout
the
region.
Working
in
teams,
they
earn
minimum
wage
by
cleaning
up
parks,
trimming
bushes
in
alleys
and
helping
out
in
neighborhoods
throughout
Kalamazoo.
In
the
process,
they
not
only
earn
money,
but
also
learn
the
value
of
responsibility
and
self‐sufficiency,
and
develop
work
skills
that
will
serve
them
well
in
the
future.
Two
brothers
who
learned
those
lessons
well
are
James
and
Jonathan
Orta.
James,
17,
and
Jonathan,
15,
both
had
a
rough
start
when
they
enrolled
in
the
summer
jobs
program
a
couple
of
years
ago,
lasting
only
a
few
weeks.
When
it
came
time
to
enroll
teens
last
summer,
some
staff
members
questioned
whether
it
was
worth
it
to
invest
the
time
in
the
boys
again.
Committed
to
the
notion
that
the
purpose
of
the
program
is
to
help
young
people
learn
what
it
takes
to
succeed,
they
decided
to
take
the
chance—
and
were
amply
rewarded.
Last
summer
both
boys
not
only
finished
out
the
summer,
but
thrived,
becoming
two
of
the
best
workers
in
the
program
and
earning
high
marks
from
their
supervisors.
Their
dad,
Joel,
said
he
has
witnessed
the
impact
of
the
experience
on
his
boys.
“They’re
more
disciplined
now—and
they
understand
that
it’s
a
lot
easier
to
do
what
you’re
asked,
when
you’re
asked.
Even
when
their
mom
asks
them
to
bring
down
their
laundry,
they
do
it
the
first
time,”
he
says.
“They
understand
what
it
means
to
have
responsibility.”

and
then

says
Winling.
“The

is
that

groups
such
as
the

to
find
a
solution.
“We
don’t

he

“Sometimes
the

it.
Our

to
help
them
through
that
transition
and
show
them
what
their

are,
often
utilizing
other

in
the
Kalamazoo

He
says
KNHS
is
looking
to
establish
a
follow‐up
program
for
these
clients,
one
that
shows
them
how
to
rebuild
their
credit
over
time.
“We
want
to

people
there

In
1925,
Dr.
W.E.
Upjohn
established
the
Kalamazoo
Community
Foundation
with
a
gift
of
$1,000.
Like
Dr.
Upjohn,
the
individuals
and
families
listed
here
are
leaving
a
legacy
for
current
and
future
generations.
The
Community
Foundation
recognizes
the
members
of
The
W.E.
Upjohn
Society
with
sincere
appreciation
for
their
vision
and
generosity
in
making
a
gift
that
will
benefit
the
greater
Kalamazoo
area
forever.
In
2008,
the
Kalamazoo
Community
Foundation
received
$18.7
million
in
new
gifts
from
the
community.
The
number
of
donors
to
the
Community
Foundation
totaled
1,893.
Their
tremendous
generosity,
and
the
generosity
of
countless
donors
before
them,
enables
the
Community
Foundation
to
pursue
its
mission
to
enhance
the
spirit
of
community
and
quality
of
life
in
the
greater
Kalamazoo
area.
While
we
are
unable
to
list
them
all,
we
are
deeply
grateful
to
every
donor
who
supports
our
work
on
behalf
of
the
community.
Listed
on
the
pages
that
follow
are
the
members
of
The
W.E.
Upjohn
Society—donors
who
have
remembered
us
in
their
will
or
estate
plan
or
who
have
established
a
fund
at
the
Community
Foundation;
Spirit
of
Community
donors—those
who
have
made
a
gift
to
one
or
more
of
our
Spirit
of
Community
Funds,
thereby
enhancing
our
board
of
trustees’
capacity
to
address
the
ever‐changing
needs
of
our
community;
and
professional
advisors
who
have
referred
clients
to
the
Community
Foundation.
We
recognize
these
professionals
for
their
commitment
to
our
community
and
their
efforts
to
advance
and
encourage
charitable
giving
in
the
greater
Kalamazoo
area.

The
Kalamazoo
Community
Foundation
plays
a
unique
role
in
our
community.
It
exists
to
encourage
community‐based
philanthropy
and
also
to
maximize
the
charitable
gifts
of
its
donors
long‐term.
The
Community
Foundation
strives
to
assure
the
prudent
stewardship
of
these
gifts
so
it
may:
•
•
•
Provide
grantmaking
dollars,
subject
to
a
spending
policy,
to
address
community
needs.
Preserve
the
original
value
of
gifts
in
terms
of
inflation.
Grow
the
assets
in
real
terms
as
market
conditions
allow,
thereby
adding
greater
resources
to
meet
community
needs
in
the
future.
The
Kalamazoo
Community
Foundation’s
2008
core
managers’
investment
performance
is
provided
in
the
chart
below
and
shows
net
performance
for
one,
three
and
five
years.
The
core
managers’
performance
drives
two
standard
investment
strategies:
the
Moderate
Growth
Strategy,
which
is
standard
for
endowed
funds;
and
the
Income
and
Growth
Strategy,
which
is
standard
for
non‐endowed
funds.
Because
the
Community
Foundation
is
fully
committed
to
the
Uniform
Management
of
Institutional
Funds
Act
for
the
administration
of
endowed
assets
entrusted
to
it,
original
gifts—defined
as
“principal”
under
UMIFA—can
never
be
distributed.
Therefore,
the
endowed
assets
of
the
Community
Foundation
will
be
with
our
community
forever.
