“Hillbilly” Games
July 2014 Volume 4, Issue 6
Flower of the month: Larkspur
Birthstone: Ruby
Hillbilly (Redneck) Games were held on July 3rd, 2014. They began with someone, who will remain anonymous, but whose initials are “Jeremy Cooper”, TP’d
my chair! Jeff Stewart and Angie Thomas, AL, are carving spam to look like the
American Flag and the word Freedom. You can see the other Spam Art created by the other program rooms. Don
Topliffe is pinning the Tail on the Possum. Over to the right is one of the Redneck Bird Feeders that Monarchs
made. The birds were really enjoying the food. You could just take a plunger and stick the handle in the ground instead of a flower pot.
Below: Sunflower Seed Spitting Contest: we have Heather Peters, DSP, getting ready to spit her sunflower seed. Look at the form
Karla Mesler, AL, used! Tammy Russell, AL, had to get a running start. But no one could compete with DSP Heather Mundaniohl’s
winning form. (more pics on page 2

To Jeremy Cooper, Activity
Leader 1. He’s been with TRC
since 2010, and has been a great
asset to Fluvanna Day Hab and
to the homes that he subbed at.
Jeremy made Monarchs into the the ‘baking’ room.
They were often on the road going to the Overlook,
or Allegany State Park to volunteer, or even to
Presque Isle. He believed in getting the participants out into the community. He will be greatly
missed. Good Luck to you, Jeremy.

Summer activities are continuing at Fluvanna. We
recently completed our “Hillbilly Games” consisting of
dill pickle sunflower seed spitting contest, toilet paper
relay, SPAM carving contest and ‘Pin the tail on the
Possum.” We are planning our next summer project – a carnival at the
end of July. This will have different carnival games, prize wheel, fortune
teller, sponge toss, face painting etc. Watch for more details and come
and join the fun!
Join us on Friday mornings at 10am for
some fun time dancing in the kitchen.
We have table bowling on Tuesdays
at 10am. Everyone has a great time.
Nursing News: By Dan Farnham, RN
July is UV (Ultraviolet Rays)
Safety Month, and skin cancer is
one of the most common cancers. From the National Health Information Center, here are some
tips:
Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m.
and 4 p.m.
Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or
higher.
Cover up with long sleeves and a
hat.
Check your skin once a month for
changes
Upper left: DSP Julia Thompson and partner Elida Phillips getting
ready for some stiff competition with AL Angie Thomas (in chair)
and partner Dan, for our TP relay race. Upper left: Randy Lake is
having a blast wheeling DSP Kristin Johnson to the finish line. Unofficially we had a game of toilet seat horseshoes. Lee Barrett gets a
ringer as DSP Heather Peters cheers him on. We did have a tie between Amigos and Inspire, so DSPs Karen Johnson and Joe Anderson went head to head for the championship. They had to make
some spam balls (hmmmm….wonder where they got the spam?) and
throw them at the target on our shed. Karen was our winner so that
means Inspire was the grand winner of the Redneck Gift Basket. It
was such a beautiful basket. We are into recycling up here at Fluvanna, so a previously used box was the perfect basket. It was filled
with things like Bubba Cola, Slim Jims, Pork Rinds, Moon Pies, &
Dill Sunflower seeds all nestled in a bed of newspaper.
