Framingham Public Schools Fine and Performing Arts Donna Wresinski February 5, 2017 FULLER HEADS TO MASS ART CAROLINE DICICCO Seven works of art created by Fuller Middle School students were selected by a juried panel for exhibition at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. The exhibition, with a theme of social change, held its opening reception on Thursday February 2nd. Students created artwork on issues such as bullying, racism and health. The evening consisted of artwork from a variety of artists, styles and media, including age, as the Fuller Middle School students selected to show are in the 8th grade. Several adults- Mass Art alumni, local artists and a professor at the College, commented that the high school works were quite intriguing (they are middle school). Bids were made on the artwork. During the Open Mic session, four Fuller students shared their talent in poetry and song. The students beamed with pride! They chose a current issue to create about. Some students chose the environment - while other students chose to make it more about their personal identity. Some students created art that is anti-bullying and anti-racism. This is often quite difficult, especially in this age group. I am not simply proud of them for working hard, engaging and persisting -- but I am also proud of them for expressing themselves, which is often much more difficult than the simple methods and processes of creating art. What you see could potentially "tug at your heart-strings". During class, we talk at length about the importance of art to culture and society. In fact, many artists create simply for the purpose of awareness and social change. We study murals across the world, including The Great Wall of Los Angeles created by Judy Baca and many students the same age as the students at Fuller.
