Golf Course Information
Mission Statement
To provide a public golf course on the Centennial Campus of North Carolina State
University that will serve as a venue for men and women’s varsity golf teams. To
facilitate turf grass and storm water research associated with the College of Agriculture
and Life Sciences. The golf course will also serve as a teaching and training facility for
the PGA Golf Management Program in the College of Natural Resources.
Course Overview
The Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University captured the
imagination of players and Press alike when it was announced on July 9, 2007. The
stunning layout has been craftily sculpted by Arnold Palmer and his design team at
Arnold Palmer Design Company. With the breathtaking views of the Raleigh Skyline and
the Centennial Campus, the golf course has become a favorite of all those in the golf
community. The course is very playable for all skill levels and a challenge to good
golfers, which include our own NC State University Championship Men & Women’s
Golf Teams. Golfers looking to improve their game and simulate actual golf course play
will benefit from expansive driving range and practice green. The state of the art
irrigation and drainage systems protect the turf from the elements. In addition, the facility
provides testing stations for the top ranked Turf Grass Program in the United States
(voted in 2007). The result of this golf facility is worthy of one of the premier universities
in the nation.

Contests & Events
Common Contests
Closest to the Hole—The player who hits their first shot closest to the hole on a
Par 3 Wins the contest. Lonnie Poole GC offers (5) Par 3’s to use for this contest
including Holes 2, 6, 8, 14 & 17.
Longest Drive—The player who hits their drive the furthest in the fairway on the
selected hole wins. The selected hole should be long and relatively straight to
accommodate this contest. Lonnie Poole GC offers (4) Par 4 / 5’s that
accommodate this contest the best including Holes 9, 11, 15 & 18
Unique Contests
Longest Putt—The player who holes the longest putt on their first try on a
selected hole wins. This contest can be offered on any hole. We suggest using a
hole with a large green to make the contest more competitive. The top 3 best
holes for this contest at Lonnie Poole GC are Holes 7, 9 & 18
Closest Second Shot—The player who hits their second shot on a Par 4 closest to
the hole wins. The selected hole should be less difficult making it easier to hit the
green in 2 shots providing all players with an opportunity to win. We suggest
using Hole 4 for this contest.
Putting Challenge—The player who holes the designed putt (off the course,
outside normal play) wins. This challenge can be setup to require more than one
putt to be holed and in the case of multiple putts holed, a playoff can determine
the winner. This contest is setup on the practice green and is administered either
before or after tournament play or during play on the “turn.”
Beat the Pro—Challenge your participants to “Beat the Pro” on a Closest to the
Hole or Long Drive. You may require a fee, or make it complimentary, for each
player to hit an approach shot or drive and if they “Beat the Pro’s” shot, you may
award them with a prize or entry into a raffle. **$60 per Contest
Golf Clinics
Treat your guests to a better golf game with a pre-game golf clinic with one of our
PGA Professionals! Clinics can be arranged for any number of players covering
any topic of the game. An event clinic is 30 min in length at $1 / Player.
**Minimum $60
Offering your guests extra
games or creative golf
events provides them with
opportunities to win prizes
and enjoy the overall
experience. Think about
adding contests like Closest
to the Hole & Long Drive or
a golf clinic with one of our
PGA Professionals to make
your event stand out and
keep your guests returning
year after year!
Tournament Formats
Scramble - In a team of 4 players, each player tees off on each hole. The best of
the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The
best of the second shots is determined, then all play their third shots from that spot,
and so on until the ball is holed. In the case a team has only 3 players, each player
will rotate who takes the 4th shot from each position on the course.
Texas Scramble - In a team of 4 players, each player tees off on each hole and the
best shot is selected. Each player then plays his/her own ball for the rest of the
hole. The lowest score is used for the team score on each hole.
Best Ball - In a Best Ball tournament, all members of each team play their own
balls on each hole. At the completion of the hole, the lowest score among all team
members serves as the team score. This format can be modified to include 1, 2, or
3 best score(s) from each hole to count toward the team total. One example would
be 2 Best Ball of 4 meaning the 2 lowest scores from a 4 person team would count
for each hole.
Alternate Shot - Alternate Shot is a format for 2-person teams and is sometimes
called Foursomes. The two players on a team alternate hitting shots, playing the
same ball. Total number of strokes taken is the team score.
Handicaps
Various handicap methods can be used to score the event. Most charity and
fundraising events included golfers of all skills levels. In order to make the event
fun, challenging and fair to all skill levels, LPGC Professionals suggest using 10%
of the team total handicap with a maximum handicap of 36 for an individual. This
method takes into account a generous portion of each player’s handicap without
reducing the lower handicapper’s chances to win.
Gross Scoring
Due to the nature of the scramble format, many tournaments opt not to use
handicaps with the idea that each team member’s ability will vary automatically
providing an equal playing field for each team. Teams formulated with some
beginner and some advanced players give each team a chance at good shots from
each position on the course.
Suggestions:
LPGC suggests using the
Scramble format for large
events with a Bogey Max
per hole to preserve pace of
play.
