Cite where you found your information. CLAIM: Britain and France had their own reasons for wanting land in North America. Choose 2 or 3 pieces of evidence from the reading that proves this claim/focus. (One in each box) 1. Many American Indians lived in the valley. They traded furs with the French in exchange for guns and other good. The French wanted to have this trade all to themselves. (page 228, paragraph 2, line 3-4) 2. British colonists wanted to trade furs and farm the land around the Ohio River valley. (page 228, paragraph 3, line 1) What does this evidence mean? Why is it important? (Analysis) This evidence means that the French wanted to continue trading with the Native Americans and that they were unwilling to share this land/trade with any other nation. This is important because it explains how the French may have blocked the British from entering into trade or settlement in the Ohio River Valley. This evidence means that the British not only wanted to trade, but also wanted to settle the land. The British were looking to build homes, towns etc. and take over the land that the French owned and the Native Americans lived on. This is important because it explains how the French & Native Americans could have been so upset. The British were trying to take over lands that the French owned and the British were trying to steal the land where the Native Americans lived 3. To the French, trade was more important than settlement. Unlike the British, The French did not send many settlers to North America. (page 229, paragraph 2, line 3-4) This evidence means that the French only had interest in trade in the Ohio River valley. They did not want to take over Native American lands and build settlements. This is important because it explains why the Native Americans were willing to work with the French. The French did not want to take over Native American lands. They only wanted to profit from trade in the Ohio River valley.
