The Pishagqua series consists of very deep, subaqueous soils that are permanently submerged in low
energy depositional basins, estuaries and coastal lagoons. Pishagqua soils formed in silty estuarine
deposits greater than 1 meter and often contain sulfidic materials. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. Pedon Description:
Ag1--0 to 13 centimeters; black (5Y 2.5/1) interior, silt loam, gray (5Y 6/1) interior, dry; massive;
loose, extremely hard, slightly sticky, nonplastic; moderately fluid; 1 percent flat less than 50millimeter shell fragments; negative reaction to alpha-alpha' dipyridyl; Oyster shell 5 cm diameter
identified in A horizon. Few very fine plant fragments.; gradual; Lab sample # 06N02277.
Cg1--13 to 46 centimeters; dark olive gray (5Y 3/2) interior, silt loam; massive; loose, slightly
sticky, nonplastic; moderately fluid; negative reaction to alpha-alpha' dipyridyl; Few medium and
fine plant fragments - yellowish colored reed/grass.; gradual; Lab sample # 06N02278.
Cg2--46 to 93 centimeters; black (5Y 2.5/1) interior, silt loam, gray (5Y 6/1) interior, dry; massive;
loose, extremely hard, slightly sticky, nonplastic; moderately fluid; negative reaction to alpha-alpha'
dipyridyl; Common medium and fine plant fragments - yellowish colored reed/grass.; gradual; Lab
sample # 06N02279.
Cg3--93 to 119 centimeters; black (5Y 2.5/1) interior, silt loam, gray (5Y 5/1) interior, dry; massive;
very friable, extremely hard, slightly sticky, nonplastic; slightly fluid; negative reaction to alphaalpha' dipyridyl; Few very fine plant fragments.; abrupt; Lab sample # 06N02280.
2Oe--119 to 145 centimeters; very pale brown (10YR 8/2) pyrophosphate extract and black (10YR
2/1) oxidized and very dark brown (10YR 2/2) interior, mucky peat, very dark gray (10YR 3/1)
interior, dry; 72 percent fiber, 24 percent rubbed; negative reaction to alpha-alpha' dipyridyl; Small
wedge of black mucky silt loam A horizon at boundary with 3Cg - not described/sampled.; A 1.5
diameter x 6 cm long wood fragment was taken at 135 cm. for identification (AWC branch?).; abrupt
wavy boundary; Lab sample # 06N02281.
3Cg--145 to 157 centimeters; olive gray (5Y 5/2) interior, silt loam, white (5Y 8/1) interior, dry;
massive; friable, hard, nonsticky, nonplastic; nonfluid; 5 percent very coarse prominent irregular
yellowish brown (10YR 5/6), moist, masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries in matrix;
negative reaction to alpha-alpha' dipyridyl; Lab sample # 06N02282.
