Sam was the middle child of the 11 children in the Crabtree family and they all went by a nickname. He was born in Lynden to Annie and Harry Crabtree. They lived on a potato farm on the corner of Guide Meridian and East Badger. Sam went to school in Lynden through the 8th grade and then left to help out on the farm. Sometimes when the work was done on the farm the family liked to go on picnics. One time when Sam was about 6 years old and the family was picnicking at Birch Bay, he was sent to throw away the garbage. While he was the gone the family got in the car and started down the road. Luckily his father always took roll call and they didn’t get too far before they discovered Sam wasn’t there. Sam eventually went to work for the telephone company and stayed until his retirement. He also met his future wife, Alida Lagerway, there. She was a telephone operator. Sam was also a volunteer fire fight1 er and a member of the Fair Board. Alida and Sam had one daughter, Donna. She describes her father as very patient man - “he was a great father”. She also said he had, and still has, a great sense of humor. She remembers going to property the family owned on H Street Road on Saturdays and chopping wood and riding motorcycles - something the whole family enjoyed doing. Sam also enjoyed fishing, crabbing, camping and having coffee with the guys. The Hilltop, Fairway Café and Dutch Treat were favorite places. Sam’s best friend, Bryant Smit, and his family used to go camping with Sam and his family. Sam has also traveled to Japan, Korea and Mexico. Prior to coming to Lynden Manor he lived on his property on the H Street Road. He’s been at Lynden Manor about 8 months now. His daughter lives out of town and visits every Friday. Sam has 4 grandsons and 1 great-grandson with another one on the way. A Look Back at To assure that we maintain a high quality dining experience we will be doing dining surveys throughout the year to see were we are doing good but also were we might need to improve. The first dining room survey was completed in December with 26% of you responding and those results are below. This information will be shared with the dietary staff and we will look at ways to improve from the feed back we receive. Dining Committee will meet on Thursday, January 12th at 1:30 pm in the Activity Room. The term of a President commences at noon on that day when the Chief Justice administers the oath to the incoming President. If January 20th falls on a Sunday the Chief Justice administers the oath privately on Sunday and then again in public on Monday, January 21st. The only inaugural element mandated by the U.S. Constitution is that the President make an oath or affirmation before he can enter the office of President. However, over the years, various traditions have arisen that have expanded the inauguration from a simple oath-taking ceremony to a day-long event, including parades, speeches and balls. Inauguration procedure in grounded in tradition rather than the Constitution. George Washington added the words “so help me God” at the end of the oath. Most Presidents use this phrase, however, a handful said nothing at the end of the oath. Theodore Roosevelt said, “and thus I swear”. There is no requirement that any book, or in particular a book of sacred text, be used to administer the oath and none is mentioned in the Constitution. But most Presidents are sworn in with their hand on a Bible opened to a specific passage of their choosing. A few have been sworn in with their hand on a law book. Traditionally the President-elect and the outgoing President arrive together. At noon the President takes the Oath. Immediately after the oath Hail to the Chief is played as a 21 gun salute is given. The newly sworn in President then gives his Inaugural Address. Following a luncheon hosted by the U.S. Congress the new President and Vice President parade down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House. It is the intent of the legislature that individuals who live in boarding homes and facilities receive appropriate services, be treated with courtesy and continue to enjoy their basic and legal rights, as well as having the opportunity to exercise reasonable control over life decisions. So, in an effort to assist our residents in understanding their rights, we are going to feature a Resident Right each month in our newsletter going forward. This month’s “Resident Right”: Each resident and legal representative has the right to: Examine the results of the most recent facility inspection by the state, and any plan of correction in effect. Resident Council Meeting All Lynden Manor residents are encouraged to attend this meeting, held every other month on the third Thursday. It’s a chance to meet your neighbors and offer any suggestions you may have.
