HEADLAND ENTAIL 240g/l nicosulfuron Grass and Broad leaved weed Control in Maize – Spring 2015 ENTAIL, containing 240 g/l nicosulfuron in an oil dispersion formulation is a selective herbicide from Headland Agrochemicals for the control of a range of grass and broad-leaved weeds in Grain and Forage Maize. The maximum label rate is 170 ml/ha, applied from two to eight ‘true leaf’ stage (GS 18) of the maize, with one application per crop. ENTAIL requires the addition of an esterified rapeseed oil adjuvant at a concentration of 0.5% of total spray volume, for which Headland recommends the use of HEADLAND FORTUNE (ADJ 0703). Efficacy: Replicated trials work carried out to EPPO standards in the UK on maize crops demonstrated its equivalence to the industry standard nicosulfuron product with excellent levels of grass weed control and equivalent broad-leaved weed control. At the time these trials were undertaken maize crops were under stress, caused by a mixture of waterlogging following prolonged rainfall and cold weather conditions. In all cases, except mixtures with bromoxynil and adjuvant, any crop effects were transient, and were outgrown by the crop. All third party trademarks acknowledged Always read the label. Use pesticides safely Entail contains nicosulfuron Callisto contains mesotrione Calaris contains mesotrione + terbuthylazine Butryflow contains bromoxynil During the spring 2013 season when the weather was warm, relatively dry and maize crops grew well and were not under stress, no crop effects were experienced where Fortune was added to the mix regardless of the partner product(s). Our view on a mixture with Entail and bromoxynil is that it is OK, provided the crop is not under stress from any climatic factor, nor from deficiency of either macro- or micro nutrient. Additional adjuvant should be avoided with this mixture. Headland is happy to endorse a range of micronutrient products in mixture with Entail. Although the label itself appears to prohibit such tank mixes, further work has been undertaken to prove compatibility with a range of micronutrient products. Where more extensive tank mixes are employed, such as Entail + a partner herbicide + a complex micronutrient product, it may be an option to omit the adjuvant. This strategy should be considered where the maize crop is under stress, and the weather conditions are cooler and more variable than ideal. Typical herbicide tank mixes include: Entail, 125 ml/ha + Callisto, 0.75 l/ha Entail, 125 ml/ha + Calaris, 0.75 l/ha Entail, 125 ml/ha + Butryflow, 1.0 l/ha Entail, 125 ml/ha + PDM 330EC, 4.5 l/ha Compatibility: A number of physical compatibility tests have been carried out, all of which are positive.
