MERTON COULTER HISTORICAL MANUSCRIPTS PART I Given by Deposited by Purchased from Other terms Date & method of arrival DESCRIPTION This Coulter Collection dates from c. 1742-C.1942 and involves a wide variety of subjects. It is arranged alphabetically by subject heading and last name, beginning with John Adair and ending with John G. York. The collection consists of 11 Hollinger boxes, 1 oversize box and several oversize folders. Contained in the collection are ppprox. 307 folders. 16 notebooks, 19 oversize folders, ledgers and diaries. Much of the collection consist! of correspondence written from and to people such as: John C. Calhoun, Calvin Coolidge, Hcwell Cobb, John Forsyth, Leo Frank, Alexander Stephens, Charles Thompson and Booker T. Washington. There are two large sections dealing with the Confederate States of America and Schools in Georgia. Under the C.S.A. section are several folders dealing with Appomatox, Conscriptions, Court Procedures, deserters, medical records, veterans and many other topics. The Schools section consist of mainly records from Normal and Poor schools in Georgia. There is also a section on Slavery which contains correspondence, records and inventories. Of particular interest is a section dealing with colonial records of Georgia. These papers pertain to the establishment of the colony of Georgia, land and other misc. topics. There is also a Yazoo Land Fraud petition from 1798 in the oversize section. Ellis Merton Coulter (1890-1981), author, educator at the University of Georgia (1919-1958) and head of the History Dept. (1941-1958), resided in Athens, Georgia. The collection consists of personal papers of E. Merton Coulter from 18981981. The papers include correspondence, clippings, diaries, financial records (1920-1977), lecture notes, student papers, grade books (1914-1958), and writings of others, as well as printed material, photographs, and slides pertaining to Georgia or Coulter's travels abroad. The correspondence (18981981) includes carbons (1946-1979) of Coulter's outgoing letters and incoming correspondence to Coulter from scholars, publishers, and former students. The correspondence reflects Coulter's activities at the University of Georgia (1919-1958); the publication of his books and articles; his activities with the American Historical Association, the Southern Historical Association, and the Georgia Civil War Centennial Commission; and his association with various historians. The most extensive group of correspondence (1929-1965) is with Roland M. Harper of the University of Alabama. The diaries (1910-1981, with gaps) contain often lengthy but sporadic entries describing Coulter's travels, his writings, his opinion of Georgia politics, and his daily activities. Belle (Bunnie) Vemon Porter (1911-1968) married Julian Hoyt Cox in 1932 and was society editor of the Athens Banner Herald from 1942 until 1968. She was a student at North Avenue Presbyterian School in Atlanta, Demorest (GA) High School, and the University of Georgia. Her sister Ann Beveille Porter was a student at Demorest High School and Piedmont College. They both kept scrapbooks which record the social events and school activities during these years (1925-1932). A Family Record Album contains genealogy of the family names Porter, King, Strobhar and Habersham. The album held numerous loose papers consisting of clippings, photographs, correspondence, printed material and genealogy information. Ancestors of Bunnie Cox include Roswell King (founder of Roswell, Georgia) and Revolutionary War Major John Habersham. The Southern Female CoHege was established in ca. 1842 in LaGrange, Georgia. Milton E. Bacon (1818-1886) was president from 1843-1855. In 1857,1. F. Cox became president and eventually the name was changed to Cox College. In ca. 1895 the college was moved to CoHege Park near Atlanta and not long after the name was changed to Cox College and Conservatory. Cox remained president until the school closed in 1923. His son, Charles C. Cox (1864-1905) served as principal for a number of years. He was married to Alice Bacon, daughter of Milton E. Bacon. The collection consists of personal correspondence of the Bacon and Cox families and records relating to the Cox College and Conservatory and its predecessors, Cox College and Southern Female College. (LesterDurward), d. 1918 Papers, 1916-1918, 1939 51 items Lester Durward Crowder (d. 1918) lived in West Point, Georgia. He served hi Company F, 167*** Infantry, Rainbow Division during World War I. The collection consists of correspondence and clippings. Most of the letters were written by Lester Crowder to his sister Lucile, his brother Garrett, and his mother (Mrs. Henry G. Crowder) in West Point, Georgia. He enlisted in June 1917 and his first letters are from Montgomery, Alabama. His company is then sent to Camp Mills in Hempstead, New York and later on to France where he is killed in battle on July 28, 1918. Although Crowder mentions his life as a soldier, he gives no details of the war itself His letter of September 25, 1917 lists the soldiers in his squad. Cumming family papers, 1787-1921. 1 microfilm reel ; 35 mm. Thomas Cumming (1765-1834), businessman, married Anne Clay (1767-1849), resided in Augusta, Georgia. Their son, Henry Harfbrd Cumming (1799-1866), married Julia Bryan whose children included Julien (1 830-1 864) and Joseph Bryan (1836-1922). The collection consists of papers of the Cumming family of Augusta, Georgia from 1787-1921. The correspondence includes letters of Thomas Cumming, Henry C. Cumming, Alfred Cumming, and Joseph B. Cumming. Of particular interest are contemporary copies of letters (1863-1864) between Julien Cumming (48th Georgia Infantry Regiment) as a prisoner-of-war at Johnson's Island (Ohio) and family friend Henry W. Hubbell in New York. The letters discuss Cumming's health, prison life, supplies he needs, and family news. Other correspondents include Seaborn Jones, William H. Crawfbrd, Governor James M. Smith, President William H. Taft, and C. Cumming of Baltimore (Md.) The collection also contains papers relating to C. Shaler Smith, engineer in charge of the construction of the Confederate Powder Works at the Augusta Arsenal (Ga.). These materials include a letter book (1861-1 863) containing engineer's sketches, specifications, lists of materials and costs, correspondence, bills of construction, an engraving of the Powder Works, and a plat showing land used for long range cannon practice. Other materials include a letter (August 14, 1863) from William Gabbett of the Confederate States of America Nitre and Mining Dept. in Chattanooga to Isaac M. C. and his participation in the fighting with letters from Macon, Camp Lawton, Milledgeville and Augusta and in S. C. from Coosahatehee, Broxton's Bridge, all in the period of 1862-6$. There is discussion of health problems, money, the fighting, the supplies he sends to his family and what crops she should plant. There are a few letters from other family members as well. Eleven letters from 1874 are to Geo. Ernest Cunningham while he was a student at Univ. of Georgia. Braswell, former publisher of the Athens Banner Herald. After her graduation from the University of Georgia in 1943, she was appointed a staff member of the United States Embassy in London. She wrote accounts of her wartime London experiences for the Atlanta Journal. While working in London, she met Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Paul Cushman of Boston, and they were married in 1945. The scrapbook contains clippings, photographs, and correspondence pertaining to her work in London, her marriage, and her involvement with the Clarke County Republican Women's Club, Lanier Garden Volunteer Service, and Docents of the Georgia Museum of Art. Teiamon Cruger Smith Cuyier (1873-1951), lawyer and writer, bom in Rome (Ga.), resided in Atlanta, then Jones County, Georgia. The series consists of correspondence of Teiamon Cuyier from 1880-1951. The correspondence includes incoming letters and typed carbons of Cuyler's correspondence as well as contracts, receipts, and telegrams. The materials document Cuyler's activities and contain information on his real estate ventures; the cotton and textile industry, trade, and mills; Cuyler's law practice in Atlanta (Ga.) and New York (N.Y.); sales of ordnance and commodities to Europe, particularly Paris (France) during World War I and II; the flax trade and industry; Cuyler's book and autograph collections; Cuyler's involvement with the University of Georgia's War Memorial Board (1935-1939); and some sporadic (1905,1942-1948) correspondence and reminiscences pertaining to his involvement in the Russo-Japanese Peace Conference (1905).
