The Star A Catholic School committed to the Lasallian Vision of Education TERM 2 WEEK 6 – 9 JUNE 2017 – ISSUE 17 / 17 Dear St Michael’s Community, YEAR 7 AND 8 2019 ENROLMENT INTERVIEWS Thank you to all those involved in the Year 7 and 8 2019 enrolment interviews held over the last two weeks. The atmosphere was one of welcome and engagement, with many excited Year 5s and 6s having their first face to face experience of St Michael’s College. I know our staff enjoyed the experience and feel it set a positive tone in regard to the prospective partnership between staff, student and family. While it is a great opportunity for staff and students to get to know each other a little better, it is also an opportunity for parents to ask questions and get a deeper sense of what St Michael’s College is about. The occasion also provides the College with important feedback as to why parents choose St Michael’s as the preferred choice of school for their sons and daughters and allows us to build on these strengths in future planning. We are currently working through the enrolments, with first round offers to be sent shortly. YEAR 7 TRANSITION With the imminent move of Year 7 to Secondary gaining momentum, I have enjoyed, together with other members of the leadership team, the opportunity to be involved in a number of parent forums at St Joseph’s Hindmarsh, St Michael’s College Primary Campus and most recently Star of the Sea School. It was great to be able to provide information, field questions and discuss matters pertaining to transition processes and St Michael’s College readiness for this significant initiative. A highlight of the St Michael’s and Star of the Sea forums were the question and answer sessions with current Year 8 students Lachlan Hoy, Nadia Spaccavento and Oliver Pedisic. Below is a snapshot of the responses from Nadia and Oliver at the SOS forum: So far, I have made new friends and I feel I have transitioned really well. I am really enjoying the new experiences and all the teachers are nice. Some of my main concerns/worries was getting lost and not being able to find my classes. However, the teachers are really forgiving and helpful and they helped me to be organised. I worried about making new friends as the school is huge compared to Primary School. I have been late a couple of times but now I feel more comfortable and know my way around. We attended an Information Night and Orientation Day as part of the transition process; these were both useful and beneficial events. Spending the day at St Michaels was great because the Year 12s talked to us and gave us a tour. I got to meet the other students in my pastoral class and some of the teachers. Also receiving a letter from past Year 8s, with helpful hints and words of encouragement was valuable. I would have loved another Orientation Day so we could have met all the teachers. The older students are very friendly, especially the Year 12s and Year 9s as they know what we are going through. The Year 12s have saved me a few times from getting lost. Initially I was very nervous about who was going to be in my class, everyone was feeling the same way. I had about five Star of the Sea kids in my pastoral class which helped me feel more comfortable. My suggestion is to talk to everyone, be friendly and smile and before you know it, you have made new friends. So far, some of the highlights of the year for me have been participating in all the great Co-curricular activities and lunchtime sports and clubs. Also the Music department is enjoyable, especially all the band rooms and variety of instruments available. My message to concerned parents/students would be that the first day is always a worry, but everything is ok after that and you get used to it quickly. My message to future Year 8 students would be to; make sure you talk to everyone, smile and be friendly. Do what you want to do with subject choices, extra-curricular activities and do not worry about what your friends are doing because you will make new friends. The new curriculum is not too challenging as we are really well prepared and have prior knowledge. Year 8 is great because you get to choose your electives that include Drama, Art, Music, D&T and Coding, that’s a lot of choices. I look forward to more interaction over the next 18 months. In the event the weather becomes inclement after 2:30pm, training sessions will be modified and/or moved indoors. LATENESS Missing a few minutes of school each day might not seem such an issue but research shows that mornings are the most productive time for children. That late arrival especially if it is habit forming, places your son at a distinct disadvantage to fully utilise the most valuable learning time of the day. Several helpful hints are: • Establish a morning routine and remove distractions such as television and electronic games • Set realistic time expectations including checking the school bag the night before PARKING CONCERNS It has come to the Colleges notice that a number of the SMC community are not adhering to regulations when parking around the College. A local resident needing to access medical attention was unable to exit her driveway recently. You are asked to note in South Australia, the Road Traffic Legislation specifies the legal parking distance from a driveway is 1.8metres on the approach or departure side of an entrance, exit, laneway, driveway, crossing place or other vehicular pathway. It has also been highlighted that, motorist are disregarding the restrictions on East Avenue. The concerns of these residents have been forwarded to the Council for monitoring. Mr Kym Clark, Director of Lasallian Mission MIDDLE PRIMARY MOTHER’S DAY EVENT On Tuesday 16 May, a wonderful celebration in honour of Mothers was held at the Primary Campus. The event started in Founders Hall with a mass conducted by Father Chris Murphy supported by Middle Primary (Years 2, 3 and 4). Afterwards our special guests, including mums, grandmas, aunties and treasured friends enjoyed arts and craft in the classroom where we saw portraits, creative headpieces, bouquets and other activities taking place. The Mothers were then escorted back to Founders Hall for morning tea. Thank you to all that attended and especially to Father Chris for celebrating Mass on this occasion. We take this opportunity to thank our Parent Committee, Primary Administration Team and Maintenance Staff for supporting the event. Mr Dion Gazettas, St Michael's Primary Sports Co-ordinator SECONDARY CAMPUS YEAR 8 SCIENCE In Week 5, Ms Harby’s Year 8 Science class used their knowledge about plant and animal cells to create cell model cakes. Through independent research, thoughtful planning and collaboration, students designed and constructed these creative (and tasty) models. The students thoroughly enjoyed the activity and the level of creativity and application to the task was very impressive. Ms Chloe Harby, Teacher-Science YEAR 12 MODERN HISTORY EXCURSION TO FLINDERS UNIVERSITY On Thursday 1 June the two Stage 2 Modern History classes went to Flinders University to undertake research on their major essays in the Central Library. They also participated in a Q&A session with Associate Professor Andrekos Varnaba, Dr Carol Fort and special guest Associate Professor David Lockwood. Mr Matthew Muscat, Head of Department-History The following is some feedback from the students: Going to Flinders was definitely an eye-opener for me. We were able to not only further develop our research skills regarding our History essays, but also had the opportunity to see and be exposed to ‘uni-life’. Being able to discuss our History topics and queries with Historians was incredibly useful for the students, providing valid tips and advice regarding how to properly construct History essays as well as beneficial research and study habits. Gianna Guttilla 12BI The excursion was a highly valuable experience for my major work. I was able to ask questions to the lecturers who provided highly credible information and ideas of what I can discuss throughout my major. I was able to undertake extensive research within the library, which has over 1,000,000 books. I found it easy to find a broad range of information. Thank you to the lecturers for providing us with such a valued experience; this will help me in undertaking my major assignment. Lauren Daly 12AM The excursion was extremely beneficial for a number of reasons. Upon arrival, it was astonishingly different to the high school environment we were all used to. We were given a quick tour of the University and the large Library. After we explored the Library and collected some books that were applicable to our major assignment, we then took the time to study using the resources available. We spoke to some History lecturers. This was a productive means of gaining information about History as a subject in general, as well as specific information for our assignments. Overall, it was an enjoyable and productive experience. Austyn Scambiatterra 12DE HISTORY DEPARTMENT – NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM On Monday 22 May, the Semester 1 Year 9 History classes created and hosted the inaugural “Night at the Museum” as part of their Depth Study on the First World War with an Australian focus. The evening was held in the Mary Mackillop Centre. There were a number of displays that were created including trenches, interactive multimedia displays, posters, trench food, ANZAC biscuits, costumes, photo booths and other displays. Many thanks to all of the students, teachers, parents/caregivers, grandparents and community members that supported the students and classes by attending on the night. It was great to see so many people participating in this event. Also special thanks to the History Trust of South Australia and the Henley-Grange RSL for lending us historical materials, such as World War I games and original First World War items, which added to the displays that were set up. Mr Matthew Muscat, Head of Department-History YEAR 8 MEDIEVAL HISTORY PRESENTATION During Week 5, the Semester 1 Year 8 History classes had a Medieval History presentation in the Mary Mackillop Centre and on the school oval. They were able to hear about warfare, battles and the weapons used, which directly relate to their areas of study. Students were able to try on the armour and use a trebuchet and other siege weapons under the guidance of Mike Dunajew (aka “Bear”) and his Medieval team. Mr Matthew Muscat, Head of Department-History The following is feedback from some students about the presentation: We were lucky enough to have a medieval armourist named Bear and his tribe come in and speak to all of the Year 8s about Medieval Europe. Bear and his assistants let us try on Medieval Armour, which Bear himself had recreated, and showed us how the individual pieces offered protection. Hamish was the first volunteer, to be dressed in armour. We learnt about weapons such as swords, axes and spears, but Bear also taught us about siege warfare and how the enemy inside a castle could be defeated. To end the presentation, Bear let various volunteers, launch stress balls across the room with catapults. It was great to see everything we had learned in class in real life before our eyes. Hamish O’Callaghan, Isaac Brown and Kobe Burt 8ST I liked the way that they presented themselves and how they involved the students. I also liked their way of teaching with the catapults and other items. They were funny and entertaining at times. The fact that they made all of the props and many different medieval inventions really helped with the visual side of the presentation. Jack Pesce 8DN DRAMA @ SMC COMMUNITY AWARENESS DAY (CAD) AND REFLECTION ACTIVITY DAY (RAD) The Year 10 Community Awareness Day (CAD) and Reflection Activity Day (RAD) are fast approaching. These will occur on Wednesday 21 June and Thursday 22 June. The Year Level will be split into two groups and do different activities on each day. The community awareness day is designed to assist students to understand how many organisations assist people in the community. The students will visit the organisation and have a presentation by a representative of the organisation to explain their role in the community. Students will then share their insights with each other in the city at the Cathedral Hall. The other day will involve a presentation by Matt Crook from Life Matters regarding setting goals for senior school, reflecting on self-image and being positive about life. More detail will be forwarded in a detailed letter and completion and return of the permission slip as soon as possible is appreciated. Mr Robert Dempsey, Acting Director of Mission GIRLS PE CLASSES Parents/caregivers are informed that all girls participating in PE classes can only wear black tights during lessons with their SMC PE shorts over the top. Black tights are not part of the College uniform as per the diary. There are exceptions to this with Dance. In the colder weather, they are permitted to wear College track pants. All girls will be given until Week 7 to make this change. After this point they will not be permitted to participate during lessons and will be given theory work until addressed. If there are any concerns over this, please email Mr Hicks. Mr Dylan Hicks, Head of Health & Physical Education ITALIAN WEEK – TORNEO DI CALCIO (SOCCER TOURNAMENT) Football or soccer (calcio) is Italy’s national sport and by far the most followed. The Italian Week ‘torneo di calico’ was open to all students (boys and girls) from all year levels. That being said, it was the Year 8/9 boys that showed the most enthusiasm and as a result, we had two Year 8 tournaments and one Year 9 tournament. All matches were closely contested and played in good spirits. Bravi ragazzi, ci vediamo l’anno prossimo! Below are the campioni: Year 8 CAMPIONI (Torneo Uno) Respect FC: Christian Basile, James Nicholas, Heath Whitehill, Dylan Lamneck, Ethan Golding, Nicolas Andresakis, Sebastian Schockman. Year 8 CAMPIONI (Torneo Due) PAB-VOB City: Hamish O’Callaghan, Filip Paragalas, Jakob Virlas, Nathan Burlow, Nicholas Andresakis, Christian Barabaro. Year 9 CAMPIONI: Squadra 2006: Nathan Bingham, Luis Benedetti, Dimitri Karagiannakis, Michael Laudato, Zachary Adamopoulos, Peter Dichiera. Complimenti ragazzi! ‘Grazie mille’ to all that participated and assisted in our three tournament days. A special thank you to Pierre Hellmanns and Rian Del Nido for refereeing. A few fun calcio facts that relate to il numero sette: Il numero sette… fortunato o sfortunato? Sette finali perse: Juventus (Italian champions) recently lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid. This was the seventh time they have lost ‘il finale’. This is now a record. Sette finali vinti: AC Milan (i rossoneri) have won the European Cup/Champions League (the most prestigious title) on seven occasions, second only to Real Madrid. Forza vecchio cuore rossonero! Settima in classifica: Animals are often used to represent football clubs in Italy – the grass snake, called Il biscione or Serpente, represents Inter. Inter (Internazionale) finished seventh in this season’s campionato. Sette volte tra le prime tre: Seven is also the number of times the Italian national team has reached the ‘top 3’ of the World Cup. They have won it four times (second only to Brasile & equal with Germania), lost in the final twice and won the third place play-off in 1990 against Inghilterra. This year we were blessed with clear blue skies, with the absence of rain for the first time in years, music to the students ears (mostly). The energy from some of the students on the way up the freeway on the bus was profound, with many belting out their own tunes without the aid of a radio or music. All students took this fantastic energy into their respective races, with all of them competing extremely well across the board on the day. All students who participated on the day should be very proud of themselves. The Oakbank Cross Country track is a very difficult one, and each runner took it on headfirst. Particular congratulations must go to the teams and individuals who finished in the top three for their events. Congratulations to Jasmine Lee, Charlotte Dolan, Megan Dini and Tiana Fernandez in the 15 Year Old Girls and Zachary Buck, Dylan Ridley, Connor Tunbridge and Mohammad Heidari in the 15 Year Old Boys, all finishing third in the teams event. Congratulations to Jobe Norris, Ethan Golding, Ryan Johnson and Noah Angove who finished first in the 13 Year Old Boys teams event. Congratulations to Madison Schwarz who finished first in the State and Chloe Schwarz who finished second in the State in the 13 Year Old Girls event. This is the fourth time in a row (since their first run in the 10 Year Old Girls event) that both Madison and Chloe have taken first and second place (in the same order). This is an amazing record for the girls.
