Roman Britain!
Religious Education Using the Come and See scheme the children will learn about ‘Journeys’, ‘Listening and Sharing’ and ‘Giving All’.
The children will be going to church for Mass on a Tuesday on a regular basis.
EPR (PSED, SEAL, PSHE, Citizenship)
Our topics are: Going for Goals, Our Lives, and Relationships.
Understanding English, Communication and Languages
The children will study a range of text types and genres including: Roman myths and legends and instructions. The children will be
immersed within Roman myths using role play, writing descriptions, endings and will finish with an imaginative independent myth
of their own! Within non-fiction the children will not only study instructions but also write their own to explain how they made
their own Roman chariot! The children will use role play, art, drama, ICT to support their learning. The children will be writing
short and long stories, legends and instructions using the above texts as a focus and structure. Additionally, the children will be
exploring poetry, learning some by heart to perform.
Mathematical Understanding Regular mental maths sessions will take place throughout the week to develop a good knowledge of
the times tables and other calculation strategies. We will also be looking at the following areas:
Place value; Understanding the four rules of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; Measures; Time and Data handling
The children shall consolidate and learn the following multiplication tables: 2, 5, 10, 3, 4, 6 and 8. Where possible, maths will be
taught within the overarching topics e.g. learning about Roman numerals.
Understanding the Arts The children will research, design and create their own Roman chariots in DT! The children will watch
video clips and use ICT and books to research not only what they looked like and how they work but also the purposes of the
chariots. Children will also be exploring the art of mosaic making! They will create their own individual piece of art that they have
designed. They will have used ICT and various materials to explore and develop their skills.
Historical, Geographical and Social Understanding Our Science and Geography are planned in a cross curricular way to fully
immerse the children into understanding about rocks and soils by focusing on the case study of Pompeii and the eruption of
Vesuvius and how it affect the people living there!
Who were the Romans? How far did their empire reach? When did the Romans invade Britain and why? How did the invasion
affect Britain and what did the Romans do for us? We shall explore these questions as well as what we mean by the word
‘conquered’. Why do you think Julius Caesar wanted to invade Britain? Why was Hadrian’s wall built? Who was Boudicca and what
was her impact?
Scientific and Technological Understanding
This term children will learn about what humans (including animals) need to grow and remain healthy. The children will develop
their knowledge of food groups and create healthy balanced diets including designing a Roman menu! The children will also learn
about how the circulatory system works and convey this using diagrams, drama and reports. After this the children will explore
human and animal skeletons, muscles and joints.
Enhancement
We have planned an exciting trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace on Monday 27th February 2017. The children will be immersed in the
Roman world for a day and take part in a Roman workshop, a visual presentation and explore the palace and gardens.
To support their learning, the children should undertaking two home research tasks, one each half term, linked to their topic work.
Please ensure that children also complete their weekly homework, due in each Monday.
Understanding Physical Development, Health and Well
Being The children will be taking part in weekly PE lessons to
develop both their gymnastic skills and their swimming! In
gymnastics the children will learn to create, develop and peerassess creative movements and sequences phrases as well as
exploring different ways of travelling, turning and jumping to
develop their fluency of movement. In outdoor PE the children
will develop their skills in invasion games.
