4-H CLUB REPORTS
Hoof & Claw 4-H Club . . . . On March 10th, Hoof & Claw members got together for their regular club
meeting and a nice dinner. Later in the month, on the 24th, the members met again at Mrs. Popp's
house for a day of fun! Members made clay models, decorated eggs, shared a meal, and played games.

4-H TURKEY PROJECT STILL OPEN
The Tioga Co. 4-H Program has again partnered with the Owego Kiwanis, to offer the 4-H
4 Fall Turkey
Project for 4-H
H members 9 to 19 years of age
age.. A Kiwanis sponsor will purchase six birds for the
4-H’er. The 4-H member is responsible for all feed and butchering costs. At the end of the project, the
sponsor will get a bird free of charge. The 44-H
H member will then be responsible for finding buyers for
the remaining five birds. The
he program begins in June and runs through late October at which time the
birds will go to the butcher.

H CAPITAL DAYS REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN
The 81st Annual 4-H
H Capital Days Trip to Albany is Sunday, May 15 through Tuesday, May
Ma 17.
4-H Capital Days is an annual New York State 44-H
H teen (14 to 19 years of age) government awareness trip to
Albany. Two teens from Tioga Co. will be selected to participate.
4-H
H Capital Days gives youth an opportunity to meet and interact with legislators and tell their
4-H
H story, create an awareness of career opportunities in New York State government, better
understand state government, and network with delegates from other counties.
During the trip, 4-H
H teens will meet 44-H’ers
H’ers from around the state and their state representatives, learn
more about NYS government, meet with their elected officials, tour the Capitol Building and the
Corning Tower, and observe the Assembly and Senate in session. They will achieve a better
understanding
derstanding of the NY Public Policy Process from a state government perspective and gain a better
understanding of state and local government relations.
Submit an essay of no less than 200 words to Jody in the 44-H
H Office describing why it is important for
f
you to attend this event. Essays are due no later than Monday, March 28.
The cost per participant is $220.00. Registrations are due no later than April 1. Registrations received
from April 2nd to April 8th are subject to a late fee of $15.00 per participant. Any registrations received
after April 8th will be returned! A chaperone is required.
TIME TO REGISTER FOR 4-H CAREER EXPLORATIONS
4-H Career Explorations is a three-day event for youth on the Cornell University campus. The
purpose of this program is to provide youth with exposure to academic fields and career exploration, to
develop leadership skills, to provide hands-on experience in a college setting and to introduce you to
Cornell University.

4-H members interested in this program should complete the application that can be found on the

application should be emailed or sent to Autumn in the 4-H Office.
4-H ANIMAL SCIENCE PROJECT ANIMAL CERTIFICATE DUE DATES
Following are the 4-H Animal Science Project Certificates and their due dates. All animal science
project certificates can be found on the CCE website. FAXED COPIES WILL NOT BE
ACCEPTED.
FRIDAY, APRIL 1
• Dog: must include a copy of current up-to-date rabies certificate and a photo clearly showing
the animal.
• Horse: must include copies of current up-to-date rabies certificate and Coggins test. Must also
include 4 photos (one of each side of the animal) clearly showing color patterns and/or
markings. Do not have the horse in tack.
FRIDAY, APRIL 29 (actual due date is Sunday, May 1)

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1

4-H FORESTRY WEEKEND
Join youth from across the state for a weekend of forestry activities, games, and competition at the 4-H
Forestry Weekend Friday, May 6 through Sunday, May 8 at 4-H Camp Shankitunk, Delaware Co.
This three day event is for youth aged 10 and up (and staff and volunteers) interested in learning more
about forests, and to select the NYS team that will go to the 2016 National 4-H Forestry Invitational
(must be 14-19 for the national event).
The Forestry weekend activities include:
• Tree identification
• Tree measurements
• Compass usage
• Map reading
• Insects and diseases
• Geocaching
• Nature games
• Night hikes and more
The cost is $43 per person which includes food, materials, and cabin lodging. Space is limited, so
register now! Contact Jody in the 4-H Office for a registration form. The deadline to register is Friday,
April 29.
4-H HORSE PROGRAM TACK AUCTION & BOTTLE AND CAN DRIVE
The 4-H Horse Program is hosting its annual JP North’s Equine Tack Auction on Friday, April 29 in
the 4-H Youth Building. The preview begins at 5:00 p.m. and the auction begins at 6:00 p.m. There
will also be a can and bottle drive.
4-H CLOVER CAFÉ DATES
The following are the dates for the 2016 Clover Café. If your club would like to secure a date for a
Clover Café fundraiser please let Jody know as soon as possible. All Clover Café dates must be fully
secured and staffed by Friday, April 1. If this is not successful then the Clover Café will not be
operational in 2016 thus losing important program money for the 4-H Program.

AWESOME EQUINE & DAIRY 101
The AWESOME Equine & Dairy 101 program will be held Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4 at
Morrisville State College. This camp/college experience is open to 4-H youth ages 13 to 19 years of
age.
Equine Program: Participants will select from two tracts in which they have the opportunity to learn
more about English, Western, racing, and draft & driving areas.
Dairy Program: Participants will learn about calf, heifer, and cow management, and reproduction.
All participants will participate in sessions on breeding and nutrition, and take a field trip to Oneida
County's annual Farm Fest event at DiNitto Farms in Marcy. All sessions will be taught by Morrisville
State College faculty and other professionals in the field of equine & dairy.

2016 NYS 4-H STEM CAMP
The 2016 NYS 4-H STEM Camp will be held Friday, June 17 through Sunday, June 19, at 4-H Camp
Shankitunk in Delhi. Registration and payment are due by June 3. Those registering early with
payment by May 1 will receive a free T-shirt. Contact Jody in the 4-H Office for a
brochure/registration form.
Courses include:
ROBOTICS - - Have you ever wanted to make your own robot that responds to your every whim and
wish? If so, then this track is for you! Spend the weekend learning how to build and program a robot.
GEOCACHING - - Do you like to hunt for treasure? Do you like to go on Scavenger Hunts? Then
GPS Geocaching is for you! Learn the fundamentals of geocaching along with some other fun and
amazing aspects of geospatial science.
ROCKETRY I & II - - Want to build and launch a rocket that will fly over 400' up in the air as well
as two water and air powered rockets? Then this track is for you! Rocketry I = beginners. Rocketry II
= past participants/built at least one rocket before. The remarkable principles of how rockets work and
the science of aerospace will be shown thru fun activities.
SUSTAINABLE ENERGY - - Would you like to learn how to cook food with little to no energy use?
Have you ever made a smoothie utilizing the sun? Find out about this and other energy efficient ways
to prepare food in our sustainable energy course! Trust us, you want to take this course!!
OUTDOOR ADVENTURE - - Do you like the outdoors? Come and learn the science and enjoy the
adventure of the outdoors in this course. This course will cover a variety of topics related to
environmental science. It will get you outdoors and exploring! Come join us for this science adventure!
CCE HOMESTEADING SERIES - NEW CLASSES ADDED
The CCE Homesteading series has been very successful, with dozens of folks who have learned how to
keep a laying chicken flock, and how to raise meat birds, pigs sheep and goats. New workshops have
recently been added for more opportunities to learn how to be more self sufficient.
