Matter Test Study Guide

Matter Test Study Guide
This test is going to cover pages 83 – 96 (green section) of the notebook and Terms 2 Learn #8 and #9
Label the diagram of the electron cloud model. Next to that, draw and label the element
Helium (don’t forget the protons, neutrons, and electrons).
proton
nucleus
electron
neutron
Draw and label a box from the periodic table. Include the atomic symbol, atomic
number and the atomic mass.
Explain how the periodic table is organized (include the terms atomic number, period
and group).
The Periodic Table of Elements is arranged by atomic
number. Periods are horizontal rows.
Periods tell the number of electron shells. Groups tell
you the elements with similar properties. Groups are
vertical columns.
Use the following chemical formula to complete the next two statements: C6H12O6
How many different elements are there? List them. 3 elements; Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen
What is the number of atoms of each of the elements? Carbon 6, Hydrogen 12, Oxygen 6
What is the formula and unit for density?
Density is mass divided by volume. Unit for density is g/mL or g/cm3
What is the density of a rock that has the mass of 10 grams and volume of 2 mL?
10g/2mL = 5g/mL
Explain how an object will float in water. (Gizmo)
If an object has a density less than 1g/mL it will float in water. Also an object will float if the volume
of the object is greater than the mass.
Write an example of a chemical equation and list 3 signs that a chemical reaction has
taken place.
Zn + 2HCl
ZnCl + H2
A new substance is formed, color change, gas produced are the three signs of a chemical reaction
Give me two examples of a chemical change and 1 example of a physical change.
Explain the difference between chemical change and physical change.
Physical change - ripping paper
chemical change -burning paper, burning sugar
In a physical change the matter stays the same and in a chemical change the matter is different
.
Give 1-2 examples of a chemical change and 2 examples of a chemical property. What
is the difference between a chemical change and a chemical property?
chemical change - paper turning to ash, sugar burns and turns to carbon
chemical property - paper has the ability to burn, sugar has the ability to burn
The chemical property is the ability to do something. The chemical change is after the chemical
reaction
Give two examples of a physical change and 2 examples of a physical property. What is
the difference a physical change and a physical property?
Physical property is a characteristic of matter you observe with your senses. Physical change is
changing the characteristic of matter but the matter stays the same.
Draw a model of H2O and CO2.
Oxygen has ___8____ protons and ___8____ electrons and __8_____ neutrons.
Silver has ___47____ protons and __47_____ electrons and ___61____ neutrons.
206.3g
393.3g
240mL
222mL
232mL
