I have often said it is a disaster in someone’s life when he does not have food, clothing or shelter, but it usually takes the absence of just one of these three to create a true hardship. I was painfully reminded of the incredible suffering that a disaster thrusts on individuals as I walked down the streets of Henryville, Indiana just two days after the EF4 tornado hit in March. I witnessed destruction rarely seen in one’s lifetime as thousands of our neighbors lost all three of the basic necessities of life in a brief moment. I talked with many people standing on the steps of what used to be the entrance to their homes. Now, only the foundation is left intact—all that survived the horrific tornado, along with a few memories and pictures rescued by family and friends. This is true suffering. They lost it all! All, but the foundation. That is when it became clear to me what God was allowing to happen in Henryville. He was pointing the way to our only Hope in times like these which is our faith in Jesus Christ, our Foundation. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). It was then that my eyes and ears were focused on the evidence of faith, as I listened to a couple share their story but still smiling and rejoicing because they had not lost the foundation or each other and that God was there to carry them through. They were experiencing peace amidst the storm. I want to personally thank the hundreds of volunteers, donors, trucking companies and our staff for helping to give Hope to Henryville! To all the victims of this disaster in southern Indiana: You are part of the foundation that was left! -John Whitaker, Director of Operations MFB’S INITIAL RESPONSE TO DISASTER March 2 Tornadoes hit Southern IN March 3 MFB delivers 2 semis of relief to New Albany, IN March 4 MFB delivers 2 semis of relief to New Albany, IN March 5 MFB delivers 2 semis of relief to our agencies in Southern IN March 6 MFB delivers 1 semi of relief to our agencies in Southern IN March 8 MFB delivers 1 semi of relief to our agencies in Southern IN HOPE SAVE THE DATE SEPTEMBER 18 Golf Outing Winding River DECEMBER 2 Christmas Concert Keith & Kristyn Getty E. 91st Street Christian Church Midwest Food Bank | 6450 S Belmont Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46217 | 317.786.8980 | www.midwestfoodbank.org Bridging the Gap between prosperity and poverty “FOR I WAS HUNGRY, AND YOU GAVE ME SOMETHING TO EAT. May 16, 2012 GAVE ME SOMETHING TO DRINK…” Matthew 25:35 Midwest food bank has made an incredible impact in the lives of so many people affected by the March 2 Tornado in Southern Indiana. I was blown away by the level of commitment from Midwest and Moody Radio. You provided so many tangibles and intangibles that will be remembered for a long time. One of my biggest struggles is figuring out a way to say, “Thank You” and words don’t seem to do justice. First, your presence in our community showed people here that they are not forgotten. Most of the media trucks and large logos left after just a few weeks. Many in the community looked up and asked, “Where did everyone go?” Then, you showed up! Secondly, the hours onsite and your availability to listen to individuals, care for them and pray for them has been referenced in the community for weeks now. You made a life-long impact. The gift cards you provided allowed folks to get fuel, medications, groceries or specific items that they needed. Without you, the need would not have been met. We are still giving those out and meeting specific needs daily. We would love to have your continued prayer and presence in our community. STAFF UPDATE We are grateful for God’s blessings that enabled Darl Schieler to increase to full time as Assistant Director of Operations and Jane Murray to join the team as part time Administrative Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator. MFB Indy Staff: John, Jane, Darl, and Donna THANK YOU! Two days after the March 2 tornado, MFB Board Member Jim Gapinski visited Henryville and writes,“. . A deep thanks to all our volunteers--without them these things couldn’t have happened. Also, appreciation to our corporate donors for donations of fresh fruit, drinks, soups and ready-to-cook prepared meals. God once again knew what we needed and had already provided us with good food product. It was a moving experience, and it was a privilege and a blessing to be able to help fellow “Hoosiers” in their time of need . . . The reason we are here as a food bank is to care and share what we have with those who need the help. We are thankful for the hands that made this possible.” 2 Days Later . . . Imagine your house and/or your town gone. Wondering, what do I do next? We were privileged to travel with the Midwest Food Bank trucks to Henryville on Sunday, March 4, two days after the tornado tore through southern Indiana. We saw the Salvation Army’s headquarters for disaster relief which was so well organized. They are ready on a moment’s notice and have the infrastructure to immediately start preparing thousands of meals three times a day to meet the needs of the tornado victims. The food bank supports the Salvation Army and brings in semi loads of supplies, canned food, bread, water and lots of fresh fruit. This food & other essential personal items are then distributed to the Salvation Army’s mobile units. We observed and were encouraged by the spirit of caring & sharing. There were many volunteers and they were there because they wanted to help the hurting. What an encouragement to see Hoosiers sacrificing to help fellow citizens. We were blessed to be there and thankful to be a part of this vital ministry in Jesus’ name bringing help and hope to those in need. -Mark and Kristel Novotny MFB Board Midwest Food Bank | Soon to Serve 250 Agencies in 47 Counties Agencies: Anchor House Backstreet Missions, Men Backstreet Missions, Pantry Backstreet Missions, Women Bethel Congregational COGIC Bethel Lutheran Church Bethesda Temple Apostolic Church Billie’s Food Pantry Blue River Community Harvest, Inc.
