G-Force, which stands for Girl-Force, is a program for girls in
grades 3-6 and is designed to empower girls with knowledge and
lifestyle habits that will enable them to be the best young women
they can be. By providing a foundational knowledge of nutrition,
exercise, body awareness and improved self-esteem in a nonjudgmental, non-competitive and supportive environment, we hope
to give young girls the tools they need to reach their full potential.
During our sessions, each girl will focus on her individual fitness
goals while building stamina, cardiovascular and muscular
strength, and confidence in her body and herself. We will also use
our time together to discuss good food choices, friendship, conflict
resolution, leadership skills, team building and other issues
important to girls.
As parents, we all know the dangers and uncertainty facing young
women. Peer pressure, societal influences and media images create
unrealistic, and often dangerous, perceptions of what it is to be a
young woman today. Teaching our young women what it means to
be comfortable in their own skin has never been as important as it
is right now. We believe that healthy and confident girls become
healthy and confident women. Our goal, through this program, is
to teach girls how to make healthy, sustainable life choices and to
appreciate and celebrate themselves and each other.
G-Force addresses nutritional and fitness needs of girls. We want
to empower girls by teaching them fun and effective lifelong
fitness habits, healthy food choices and positive self-esteem.
The group will meet for 10 weeks beginning Tuesday, Sept. 30.
Meetings will be held at the Elkin Recreation Center from 4:005:00 on Tuesday afternoons. Pickup will be at the large picnic
shelter at 5:00. Please be sure to pick your child up on time as
volunteers may have other family or work commitments later in
the afternoon.
G-Force specifically provides a running/fitness program that
includes yoga, stretching, strength training and middle-distance
running and walking. We know that adult women tend to stay fit
by doing these kinds of activities, and we believe that younger
generations can benefit by learning these skills early. Each girl,
with the help of her parents and an advisor, will determine her own
fitness goals. Each week, we will run/walk as a group, but
“workouts” will be determined based on individual need and/or
ability. We will conclude the 10-week session by participating in a
local 5K. Each girl will complete the distance by either walking or
running; however, we will participate as a group, cheering each
other on and supporting one another in our efforts. In this respect,
G-Force teaches girls teamwork, support, and encouragement and
aims to celebrate the girls both as individuals and as teammates
and friends.
Not at all. So many girls can benefit from our programming. Our
classes will provide overall conditioning for girls who have not
traditionally been as active as well as provide foundational
stretching and strengthening for even the competitive athlete. We
are a program that can benefit any girl interested in improving her
health and physical fitness level. Again, we are always
noncompetitive and positive. We want to see all shapes and sizes
of girls. We emphasize, in our educational program, that we each
have different body types and our goal is to make good choices
when it comes to how we exercise, eat and treat our bodies. In each class, we will leave time to talk about whatever our
"theme" is and nutrition. We incorporate the information into
lessons with games and group discussion. We address the esteem issues in the same way as nutrition, through
skits, short presentations and small group discussions. G-Force is
always very positive, and we make sure we tell the girls what a
great job they're doing and how special they are.
We believe
that by setting goals and meeting them, each girl will walk away
feeling better about herself each week. By working towards a
larger goal and meeting smaller weekly goals, girls will discover
they are capable of more than they might have imagined. This
success is what builds confidence.
In addition to the individual running program, nutritional
education, self-esteem enhancement, and the camaraderie of good
friends, G-Force will provide each girl with a G-Force T-shirt,
which we will all wear at the race, a G-Force water bottle, and the
entry fee in the 5K.
