For the people of IHM
Parish
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
From the
Pastor’s
Desk
My Family of Faith:
As we approach the most solemn week of Christianity I encourage
you to please, read, reflect, and place yourself in one of the passion
narratives. We cannot call ourselves Christian without spending some
reflective time with these powerful events of Christ's love for us.
You can find the Passion Narratives on the following citations:
Matthew 26-27:66
Mark 14-15:47
Luke 23
John 18-19:42
I close with the words of Venerable Archbishop Sheen:
“Unless there is a Good Friday in our lives, there will never be an Easter Sunday. The Cross is the condition of the empty tomb, and the crown of thorns is the preface to the halo of light. When all is said and done, there are only two philosophies of
life. One is first the feast, then the hangover; the other, first the fast and then the feast.
Deferred joys purchased by sacrifices are always sweetest and most enduring. Christianity begins not with sunshine, but with defeat. Sunshine religions that begin with psychic elation, end often in disillusionment and despair. So essential is dying to self, the
prelude to the true life of self, that there were three monumental attempts to force Christ
to abandon His Cross. The Devil offered three short cuts to winning the world at the
beginning of His Public life . Peter, the head of the Apostolic band, also tried to solicit
Him from the Cross and was scorched for it by being called "Satan." And finally, at
Golgotha, His enemies standing beneath the Cross hurled a challenge:" Come down and
we will believe." Apparently they’d believe anything He taught if He would only abandon His philosophy that only by losing one's life does one save it.”
In joy, not a day without the Cross,
10:15 a.m.

Please Give Generously on Good FridayWorldwide Collection for the Holy Land
On Good Friday, the
Church will take up a
worldwide collection for
the Holy Land, its people
and its shrines. This is the
time for us to be extra generous. If you won’t be at
the Good Friday service,
consider putting your gift in an envelope marked Good
Friday Collection and dropping it in the Sunday collection or mailing it to the parish office. Christianity is rapidly disappearing from the Holy Land. For our brothers
and sisters there, it is a daily struggle for survival.
Please give generously on Good Friday, April 14.
Chrism Mass
The Chrism Mass in the Diocese of Madison will take
place on Tuesday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Maria
Goretti Church in Madison. At this Holy Mass, Bishop
Morlino will bless the holy oils that are to be used in our
diocesan churches for the coming year, and he will present them to representatives of each parish. At the Holy
Thursday evening Mass, the holy oils will be processed in
and presented to Father Chad, where they will be placed
in a special cabinet called the "ambry." There are three
types of holy oils - the Oil of Catechumens - used for
Baptism; the Oil of the Infirm (or Sick) used for the
Anointing of the Sick; and the Chrism Oil, used for Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders.

IHM Holy Week and Easter Schedule
Please plan on attending
Holy Thursday – April 13 Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper – 6:00 p.m
On Holy Thursday we celebrate only one Mass, called the Evening Mass
of the Lord’s Supper, because Jesus celebrated the Passover meal with his
disciples in the evening in the upper room. This is one of the richest and
most beautiful liturgies of the Church. We commemorate the Last Supper
when Jesus instituted both the Sacrament of the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Holy Orders to the priesthood. Since no Mass can be celebrated
on Good Friday, many extra hosts are consecrated at this Mass and left on
the altar after Holy Communion. The vessels with Holy Communion
(Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ) are solemnly processed
through the Church, accompanied by incense and candles. It is taken to
the Altar of Repose. Here, it is reserved in a tabernacle so that it may be
taken to the sick at any time and may be consumed on Good Friday. Our
Chapel of Repose will remain open for silent prayer until midnight.
Good Friday – April 14 - Service of the Passion of Our Lord – 2:30 p.m.
The service of the Lord’s Passion begins with the priest entering and prostrating himself
on the floor, in a gesture of total adoration for what the Lord has done. The liturgy is
celebrated in three parts. The first is the Liturgy of the Word where we hear Isaiah’s
prophesy of the suffering servant and then Jesus’ heart wrenching words, “Father, into
your hands, I commend my Spirit.” Then we hear the Passion according to St. John
which describes the events in vivid language. The second part of the liturgy is the Veneration of the Cross. This was first practiced by the early Christians in Jerusalem - actually on Golgotha, the place where Jesus was crucified. Centuries later, this practice was
adapted in Rome and other cities. We venerate the cross as the instrument of our salvation, and we adore Christ for his saving work. The final part of the liturgy is Holy
Communion (we receive Jesus in the hosts consecrated at the Holy Thursday evening
Mass). No Masses are celebrated anywhere in the world on Good Friday. Catholics believe that the Mass presents again
the Sacrifice of Christ. On Good Friday we represent this by our veneration.
Easter Vigil – Saturday, April 15 – 8:00 p.m.
The entire celebration of the Easter Vigil, considered to be the greatest
of all Church feasts, must take place during the night. Unlike a regular
Saturday evening Mass, the rules for the Easter Vigil state that it may
not begin until after sunset. The Vigil begins outside, with only the
Easter fire to serve as light. The large Easter Candle is lit. This candle
serves as a symbol of Christ’s victory over darkness and it is used at
baptisms and funerals throughout the year. As the priest lights the candle from the Easter Fire, he says, “May the light of Christ rising in glory dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.” One by one, everyone’s candle is lit, passed from person to person. The second part of the
Easter Vigil is the Liturgy of the Word. It is extended at the Vigil and involves several Scripture readings, Psalms and
prayers. These call to mind the story of our salvation. It literally begins, “In the beginning” with Creation, and continues
as we hear of Abraham’s faithfulness, the Exodus out of Egypt, and the words of the Prophets speaking of God’s faithfulness. It comes to its culmination with the Gospel describing the faithful women visiting the Lord’s tomb and serving
as the first witnesses to the resurrection. The third part is called the Baptismal liturgy. On this night we baptize, confirm
and give first Eucharist to adults who have been in the RCIA. We also welcome people who were baptized in another
faith tradition. Finally, in the fourth and final part of the Vigil, the first Eucharist of Easter is celebrated. Those who
were baptized and confirmed or welcomed into the Church from another denomination, receive the Eucharist for the
first time.
