They inform the student why they are learning and what they should know, understand and are able to do as a result of the lesson. Subjects areas have their own language to guide the student to the objectives. ‘You are learning to’ before makes it obvious to the pupils what they are going to have to get from the lesson. ‘You are learning to’ know that …….. tells them it is about gaining knowledge, information, names, places, people: that it is factual. ‘You are learning to’ understand why/how to ……… This tells them it is about getting concepts, considering reasons why or for, what the effects may be and the processes. This can be scientific or technical as well as moral. ‘You are learning to’ be able to/ can do or to develop ……. This tells them they are going to gain a skill; or build on a skill maybe using the knowledge . This could be through analysis or becoming aware of attitudes and values, have empathy and feelings. At the time of writing this entry I have not seen the show or the result, but am very much looking forward to the performances, it is always a pleasure to experience the incredible talent of the students! Good luck to all who have entered! This has been a challenging term with a lot of emphasis on the options and I would like to thank all of the parents who have supported the school and their children in making these important choices. I have also been impressed with the maturity of the Year 9 students in making these decisions and speaking to the members of staff about the process. Enjoy the rest of the week and I hope that you will all have a brilliant, well deserved Easter break. Grey Court School e-bulletin Year 10 Head of Year 10 Mr Andrew Burton You may now be starting to think about the options available to you once you leave Grey Court School. Page 3 October 2011 Yr10 Jamie Oliver students with BBC chef Paul Merrett Grey Court School e-Bulletin Year 11 All Year 11 students should now have their own exam timetable. This will enable students to plan their revision over the Easter holidays and beyond. A good way to plan is to use a revision timetable as this clearly sets out what, when and how much revision should be carried out. Students will be completing their revision timetables in tutor time and should have them completed by the end of next week. During the first week of Easter, there are also a number of revision courses running in school. If your child is required to be in school, individual letters have been sent out to you in the post. I am sure that I do not need to remind students that this is the most important part of the year and it is now that the most difference can be made. Good organisation will make students feel calmer about revision. Setting clear goals that are achievable is essential to ensuring that students reach their potential. How can parents help? Sit down and go through your child's exam and revision timetable with them before the Easter holidays allow your child enough time in the day to complete their revision Identify days in the two week break that cannot be used for revision, e.g. you may want to go out for the day to give your child a break from work give your child rewards if they have reached their target for the day play an active role in their revision Another way to help is to ensure that your child is eating the correct foods. I have attached a useful leaflet that gives some good ideas on the types of food that are can help the mind! Year 11 information relating to start of exams on May 14th 2012 As you may be aware, schools are no longer able to offer study leave to students taking GCSE exams. Following on from the success of last year, we have put together a detailed and exciting revision package for all Year 11 students. The programme is called ‘Passport to Success’ and will run throughout the GCSE exam timetable. After Easter, students will receive a booklet detailing revision sessions that will run during school time. This will tell them exactly where they have to be during the day. In many cases, students will receive an extra double period of a particular subject before an exam. This will give the students the best opportunity for them to ask any last minute questions or maybe just go through exam techniques. The revision sessions will be focused and extremely useful for all students. Attendance at these sessions is compulsory and this will guarantee them an invite to the prestigious Grey Court Prom on June 28th. In addition, breakfast revision sessions will be offered for all morning GCSE exams. These will run from 7.45 – 8.30 in the Main Hall. Students will be able to come in and go through a short revision session on the big screen with their subject teachers while eating a croissant and drinking some orange juice! I would strongly recommend that all students take advantage of this excellent offer as this has been proven to be an excellent method of focusing and also relaxing before an exam. If you have any questions about anything relating to Easter Revision or the Passport to Success then please do not hesitate to contact me. Year 7 Borough Netball Tournament On Wednesday 21 March, in glorious conditions, the year 7 netball squad set off to Waldegrave to take part in the year 7 Borough Netball Tournament. The squad of Eve Williams, Anna Dowling, Izzy Brechin, Morgan Penney, Maddie Jones, Jessie Craddock, Kirsty Frame, Olivia Fox, Mia Swaysland, Ella Scorgie and Molly Davies were in high spirits having got their first points of the league competition the day before against Hampton Academy. Their first match was against Teddington B team and Grey Court got off to a great start winning 4-0, with both Maddie and Jessie on target. Their second game was against Hampton Academy, the team they'd played the day before. This was a slightly tougher match with Hampton racing to a 2-0 lead and Grey Court appeared to be struggling to match their play. The game ended up being 3-1 to Hampton, so the team were disappointed with that result. Grey Court's 3rd game of the tournament saw them play some of their best netball yet against Richmond Park Academy, Eve and Mia having great games as well as Izzy in defence. Grey Court's 4th game was against Christ's and again the team played some fast flowing netball with the game finishing 1-0 to Grey Court. Next up was Orleans Park B team, who we knew would be tough opposition. It was a tight game, end to end, and Ella Scorgie played well in defence preventing Orleans Park attacks into the circle. The game ended 2-1 to Grey Court, and the team were really pleased with their play so far, with 4 wins out of 5. Their last game of the group stages was easily going to be their toughest, against Waldegrave, who they had already played in the league and had lost fairly heavily to. The team were on a high and started well, although Waldegrave soon picked up their game and they started to take control. The final score was 5-1 to Waldegrave, which sent them through as winners of the group. It was a long wait to see whether the team had made it to the semi-finals as two teams would progress, but unfortunately Hampton Academy had one extra draw so they progressed through to the semi-finals. The girls played exceptionally well and should be proud of their achievements. Congratulations to the whole team!! Miss Sheldrake - Head of Girls PE Grey Court School Sporting Stag Year 7 Netball Richmond Park Academy 5 : Grey Court 13 Year 7's first fixture win. Great performance by the whole team. 2 quick goals by Maddie Jones put Grey Court ahead after only a few minutes. RPA then pulled 1 back. After that it was all one way traffic, excellent passing and movement by everyone with the whole team looking for the space and some excellent play from Olivia Fox in the middle of the park. The half time score was 6-2 The second half saw some changes from RPA as they came back all guns firing and pulled back 2 goals straight away. Grey Court re-organised themselves and kept close to their players and again the goals came from Jessie Craddock and Maddie Jones, with Anna Dowling and Eve Williams linking up well and giving them additional options. A misplaced pass by Grey Court allowed RPA the opportunity to complete their 5th and final goal. The girls never gave up and worked excellently together. It was the teams first win in their group they all played fantastically well and deserved the win. Ms. Angel – PE Dept Year 7 Netball Hampton Academy 6 : Grey Court 6 Fantastic game, very closely run all the way through. The whole team played together as a team and worked for each other which was fantastic to watch. All their hard work in practice paying off. Excellent link up work by Anna Dowling, Eve Williams between attack (Maddie Jones and Kirsty Frame) and (Isobel Brechin and Ella Scorgie)defence. Isobel Brechin made some fantastic interceptions to prevent goals. All the Grey Court goals came from Maddie Jones, player of the match (MVP). Half time saw the score 3-2 to Hampton Academy. The girls discussed what needed to be improved and decided to pick up the pace of the game and stretch the opposition out. Second half came and Hampton struggled to keep up with the pace, so tactics were working well. Throughout the game, the match was tight, with each team scoring, Grey Court equalised and then for only the second time in the game, took the lead. With only minutes left of the game, Hampton Academy equalised to make the final score 6-6. A fair representation of the game. A great performance by all the team, and definitely believing we can go on to win our next fixture. Ms. Angel – PE Dept Grey Court School U12 Isleworth & Syon Rugby 7s Tournament Grey Court winners of Plate Final The year 7 squad took part in the Isleworth & Syon rugby 7s tournament on Monday 19 March and finished Plate winners. We were drawn in pool B and lost our opening game 17-15 to Orleans Park. We then beat Vyners 41-0 and Salesions 26-21. This meant we finished runners up in our group and had to play Heathlands in the Plate Semi Final. We beat them 22-15 and this meant a rematch of our opening pool game against Orleans Park in the final. This time we got revenge and came out winners by two points winning 29-27. The squad performed extremely well and deserved their success. Year 7 Squad Alfie Ransom (Capt) / Kiren Farebrother / Nesta Guiness-Walker / Shaun Parkes / Aaron Bruce Conrad Zeuner-Griffiths / Art Geraghty / Andreas Scuotto / Gabriel Downer / Jack Coombs Eli Gyandoh. Mr. Willmore - Head of PE/Sports Reception Multi Skills Olympic Festival Tuesday 13 March 2012 @ Grey Court School Grey Court hosted a Multi Skills Olympic Festival for 80 reception children. Based in the sports hall, the 5 year olds were put through their paces with a series of activities that tested out some of their basic physical skills. A group of 20 Yr 9 girls acted as Young Leaders for the afternoon, organising, enthusing and generally making sure that the children had a really good time. At first a little worried by the size of the children, the girls soon hit their stride and began to really enjoy the afternoon. At the end of the event all the children received a certificate and went home tired but happy. A big well done to all the girls who helped – they were magnificent. Ms. Jackson - Schools Sports Coordinator Grey Court School Sporting Stag Year 8 Orleans Park Rugby 7’s Tournament On Friday 16 March, Grey Court entered two teams in the Orleans Park 7s tournament. Our 1st team finished 3rd only losing one game throughout, whereas our 2nd team did not perform to their capabilities and finished 7th. Well done boys, great effort Mr Willmore Year 8 Netball Hampton Academy 1 : Grey Court 14 On Tuesday 20 March, our year 8 netball team consisting of India Walton, Anna Marshall, Samedina Curaj, Tia Lowden, Ciara Lewis, Zoe Cramp, Rui Lan Zhang and Molly Marshall, travelled to Hampton Academy for their 4th league fixture of the season. As Borough Champions from last week's tournament, Grey Court were keen to continue their winning ways and started the match brightly, quickly putting in 3 nets in the first few minutes. With Zoe Cramp playing Centre for the first time, she controlled the game, linking nicely with Molly Marshall as WA and Anna Marshall as GA. Yet again, Ciara and Tia had very little to do in defence, although towards the end of the first half, Hampton Academy picked up their game and started to play some nice netball. The score going into half time was Grey Court 10, Hampton Academy 1. In the second half, Grey Court made some changes with India coming into GA to replace Anna. Hampton started the brighter of the two teams and quickly put pressure on Grey Court's defence. Ciara Lewis was having a great game as GD and eventually Grey Court picked up their game and started to score more nets, even though it took the team 7 minutes to score a net in the second half. The final score was Grey Court 14, Hampton Academy 1. Well done to the whole team who are still undefeated this season. Miss Sheldrake - Head of Girls PE Year 8 Netball Richmond Park Academy 1 : Grey Court 18 On a sunny Thursday afternoon, having already had a league match earlier in the week, Grey Court's year 8 netball team travelled to Richmond Park Academy for their 5th match of the league campaign. Cheyanne Mason returned to the squad, and India Walton had other commitments, however other than that, the team remained the same with Ciara Lewis and Tia Lowden controlling the defence, Zoe Cramp, Rui Lan Zhang and Molly Marshall taking charge of the centre court and Anna Marshall and Samedina Curaj leading the attack. The team made a great start to the match, quickly going 5-0 up in the first 5 minutes of the game. However, RPA soon found their feet and fought hard to try and get back into the game. Nevertheless, with some excellent interceptions from Ciara and Cheyanne, Grey Court soon extended their lead to 8-0 at half time. The second half saw Molly replace Zoe as WA and Grey Court continued to dominate even though RPA scored a quick net in the second half. Rui Lan and Tia continued to defend well and Samedina's movement in the circle allowed some excellent passes and shot conversions towards the end of the second half. The final score was 18-1, so 5 wins out 5 for the year 8 netball team. Well done girls! Miss Sheldrake - Head of Girls PE Grey Court School Sporting Stag Senior Girls Football Grey Court 2 : RPA 2 Report by Libby Brown - Team Captain Monday 19 March, the senior girls football team played Richmond Park Academy at Palewell Park. It was the senior girls first match they had played together in a long time and there was a good draw of 2-2. It was Georgia Strode's and Kimberley McCuaig's first game they had played and they did really well as Kimberly set up a goal by crossing it to Georgia, who got it straight in the top corner of the goal. Kate Harding also did extremely well, a year 8 playing in the senior girls team and also scoring a free kick, playing a big part in helping the team get the draw and not lose. The second half went a little less well than the first half, as RPA's goalie came out and was a very skilful player. All of the girls tried hard defending against her, but unfortunately she got RPA's second goal which was scored in about the last 5 minutes of the game. Hannah Levin did great in goal, saving lots of shots and even corner balls. It was a really fun game for everyone to play in, as it has been quite a while since the girls had all played together. But nevertheless, everybody played brilliantly. Hopefully a win for the next game! Year 9 Borough Volleyball Tournament Grey Court School hosted the Cluster B Volleyball Tournament on Thursday 22nd March and both the boys and girls teams performed extremely well. We had two girls teams in the tournament and these came 1st and 2nd. Both teams have progressed to the Borough finals. We had three boys teams in the tournament and these finished 2nd, 3rd & 4th. Again all teams have progressed through to the Borough Finals. A big thank to James Purton, Kavinda Peiris and Gary Taylor who were the young officials for the tournament. Well done Mr Willmore - Head of PE/Sport Year 10 London Volleyball Finals On Tuesday 20 March, the year 10 volleyball squad played in the London Finals in Greenwich. The team were drawn in Pool B and finished 3rd in the group. After a disappointing opening game which the team lost 25-8, they went on to win 24-23 against Kingsdale and 25-12 against Eastbury before losing their final game 23-18. The boys should be very proud of their effort and the way they played throughout the tournament. Year 10 Squad Omar Parsons / Sanjar Najibi / Christian Olivo / Ben Bryant John / Koyejo Adesida. Well Done Mr Willmore - Head of PE/Sport
