Estevan & District Music Festival 2017 Piano - March 19-25 Band/Instrumentals/Strings - March 27-28 Vocal & Speech Art - March 29 – April 1 President’s Message 2017 I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending the 52 nd Estevan and District Music Festival. As always, this is an exciting time of year to appreciate and enjoy all of the work the students have done to prepare for the festival. This is my fifth and final year as President and what a wonderful time it has been. I want to thank each teacher, student, parent, and volunteer for the countless hours dedicated to ensure the success of every festival. I thank you for sharing your dedication, knowledge and spirit for music with me. The Festival Committee began working on this Festival in the fall. Our Committee’s many hands and vast knowledge has made my job very easy. I am proud to welcome four new Committee members this year. The number of entries is similar to last year and we have over 95% online entries. This year will be our first year without a printed program, the times are changing! Please take a moment to review the biographies of our respected adjudicators coming to us from Saskatoon, Regina and Brandon. Three of the four have returned to Estevan to adjudicate for us again. Biographies are posted online and in the foyers. We will grow musically with the wealth of information you will share with us. We hope you enjoy our city and will return one day. Saskatchewan Music Festival Association accepts up to two outstanding volunteer nominees from each district festival every year. Our local board was pleased to nominate Allison Holzer and Lesa Seipp as our 2016-17 recipients. Besides being acknowledged provincially at the SMFA annual meeting, we recognized them locally at a supper held in their honor in the fall. Their contributions to our organization are also included in this program. Take a moment to check them out, and when you see them, please thank them for their contributions! Thank you to all of the students and teachers who have been working tirelessly to prepare their pieces for the Festival. You are the reason we enjoy our work. The music we hear brings our community and Committee much joy and happiness. I wish to thank the community of Estevan and area who graciously donate to the scholarships and the financial running of the Festival. Without you, we could not operate or be able to give back to the students. The overwhelming support is greatly appreciated. Lastly, but not least, it is the volunteers of our community that bring everything together. Thank you to the ticket takers, secretaries, supervisors and committee members that donate their time year after year for a successful Festival. I am proud to live in a community who gives freely of their time for promoting community and quality of life in Estevan. Please thank our volunteers. There has never been a more vibrant arts & music community in Estevan and I am so privileged to be a part of it. Remember to always have music in your life Pam Dechief 2017 President “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent” – Victor Hugo The mandate of the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association is: “to promote excellence in music and speech arts by providing performance and educational opportunities through competitive festivals.” We appreciate the provincial scholarships bestowed by our many patrons that offer substantial financial sponsorship to our young performers. Lore Rushchiensky - Piano Regina, Saskatchewan Lore Rushchiensky of Regina began her piano studies in Eston, Saskatchewan. She studied with Dorothy Bee in Regina for her Teacher’s Associate in Piano and received her Associate in Piano Performance while studying in Ottawa. She has continued to pursue further studies in music in piano pedagogy as well as general music studies at the conservatory and university level. She has had the privilege of attending professional development conferences provincially, nationally, and internationally on a regular basis. Lore has adjudicated extensively in her home province of Saskatchewan for the Saskatchewan Music Festival and Contemporary Showcase as well as in Alberta. She examines across Canada for Conservatory Canada. Lore has also worked as an accompanist and as a workshop clinician. Lore has been actively involved in the Regina Branch of the Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers’ Association since 1984, serving on the executive in various positions, including twice as president. She served on the provincial executive of the SRMTA and was the OPUS editor from 1995-2007. She was the Canada Music Week coordinator for the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’Association from 1999-2001 and from 2001-2008 was the editor of CFMTA journal "The Canadian Music Teacher". Lore maintains a studio in Regina teaching all levels of piano and theory. Since 2011 Lore has been the Artistic Director of the Cecilian Chamber Series in Regina, a series that features chamber music concerts presented by world-class artists. The Estevan and District Festival is a member of the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association and we are governed by their rules and regulations. 2016-2017 Executive President … Pam Dechief Vice President … Esther Bangsund Entry Secretary … Leanne Carlson/Andrea Piper Corresponding & Recording Secretary … Carolyn Walliser Treasurer … Christine Massier Scheduling/Programing Coordinator … Anita Kuntz Scholarships … Sherry Waldegger Publicity … Margaret Duncan Friends of the Festival … Kristen Mackenzie Volunteers and Members at Large: Heather Barnstable, Cindy Burham, Meagan Miller, Nicole Smigiel, Trena Wick, Angie Weibe, Errin Goettling, Shirley Andrist Did you know that besides the preparation before and after festival, it takes over 300 volunteer hours during the actual festival? Did you know that because of the very generous donations from individuals and businesses in our area, over $10,000 is given out in scholarships to our children, school and community groups? Did you know that this committee has less than 5 meetings a year and behind each of these coordinator/executive positions, there are many small jobs that could be done by other volunteers? Are you looking for a way to give back to your community? Consider giving some of your time and energy to your local SMFA festival. This organization also reaches far beyond the local level as it provides local musicians an opportunity to compete and participate at a Provincial and/or National level. For more information, check the syllabus at www.smfa.ca . The Saskatchewan Music Festival Association has a proud heritage. It provides a platform for music festival performances for students across the province. This body represents 47 district community music festival organizations across the province. Many communities all over Saskatchewan are involved annually in producing volunteer-run district festivals, workshops and concerts. This reaches more than 70,000 people when you consider participants, volunteers and audience members. Allison’s music festival experience started as a young child. She participated in vocal, speech, and piano classes from pre-school to high school. Her mother was the church choir director, and she was the church organist for years, and accompanied choirs in the festival as well. Her father was an advocate of community volunteering, and acted as the president of the Mainline Music Festival (Grenfell, Wolseley, and Indian Head) for several years. With role models as these, it was just natural that she should also become involved with the music festival as an adult volunteer. In 1983, Allison moved to Estevan as a young first year teacher, and quickly found herself accompanying high school and junior high school band students in local and out of town music festivals. She also accompanied a ladies choir, The Joy Singers, which travelled on the Stars circuit and also competed annually in the music festival, and has left a local scholarship to encourage new choirs and singers. Allison was soon invited to be part of the local music festival committee, and from 1997 to 2013 filled various roles on the executive. She continued to accompany band and vocal students, as well as direct her choir and drama classes at ECS, in the festival. She also had the pleasure of watching and coaching and accompanying her own three children as they took part in speech, vocal, piano, and band over the years. Although she is no longer on the executive and has retired from teaching after 32 years, she is still acting as a volunteer for the festival, and still continues to accompany students and choirs. Over the years, Allison has also enjoyed directing and accompanying ECS musicals, being on a church music team, singing in and accompanying church and community choirs, and coordinating the local Rotary Carol Festival. In terms of other community service, she has served as a Rotarian for a number of years, and has just recently stepped onto the Arts Council, the Souris Valley Theatre Board, and the local horse schooling show committee. Allison cannot imagine life without music and the arts, and feels that it is so important that our youth have the opportunity to share and grow their abilities, and that is exactly what the Music Festival provides. She is sure that she will be involved with the Music Festival in some way for many, many more years to come. Allison wishes to thank you, the committee, for recognizing her contribution and also for the many hours of volunteer work that have made the music festival happen again this year. “Music can change the world because it can change people.” - Bono Lesa Seipp Lesa grew up in Macoun, SK. Her parents owned the local hardware store for years and eventually bought Lesa’s grandparents’ farm. So, being around people and having a handyman dad has taught Lesa many valuable things. She always admired the interaction her parents had with their customers and always had the inkling to have her own store and be able to help others as they had. Not only their interaction with customers, but the dedication her dad had to volunteering in the community, is something she continues to strive for. Growing up in a small community, volunteering is what kept it alive and vibrant, and was the natural thing to do. The more one volunteered, the more the opportunties came forward. As her children grew, top priority was to support and volunteer in activities they participated in. Estevan Music Festival was one of the areas where she volunteered for many years, maybe 14–where did the time go? When her daughter started piano, and then her son, Lesa was approached and jumped on the executive’s board. What a great organization to volunteer for! As for family, Lesa is married to Tim, and they have 3 grown children: Zachary, Kristen and Kyle. Zach is a journeyman mechanic at Murray GM in Estevan, Kristen is finishing up her degree in Political Science and Kyle has just been posted out east with the Armed Forces. Tim is Territory Manager in the Ag Division at Redhead Equipment. As for Lesa, she has realized her dream of becoming a store owner and now owns and operates Nutter’s Health Food store in Estevan. Tim and Lesa reside on his family farm, so in the summer, she will be cutting grass during the day, but also sitting by a relaxing bonfire at night. Lesa loves the peace and tranquility that being out in the country gives. They still find their way to the hockey rink watching other kids in the winter. Being newly empty nesters, Tim and Lesa are attempting to travel more. Lesa still actively volunteers as secretary to the adjudicator for several sessions at every festival. Volunteers don’t necessarily have the time, they have the heart. – Elizabeth Andrews Thank a volunteer today! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sunday, March 19, 2017 Venue: Trinity Lutheran Church Piano Adjudicator: Lore Ruschiensky _________________________________________________________________________________________ 1:00 PM CLASS 2200 Piano Solo, RCM/CC, Preparatory, Any age ____ 1.
