Time Frame: 10 days
Revised TEKS Check- Before the Chapter
Reteach/review GAP Alerts from last school year.
Represent a fraction a/b as a sum of fractions 1/b.
Decompose a fraction in more than one way into a sum of fractions with the same
denominator using concrete and pictorial models and record results with symbolic
representations.
Determine if two given fractions are equivalent using a variety of methods.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators and
represent the comparison using the symbols >, <, or =.
Represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators
using object and pictorial models that build to the number line and properties of
operations.
Evaluate the reasonableness of sums and differences of fractions using benchmark
fractions.
Objectives
Skills: The student will be able to…
Estimate to determine solutions to mathematical and real-world problems
involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. (5.3A)
Represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with unequal
denominators referring to the same whole using objects and pictorial models and
properties of operations. (5.3H)
Add and subtract positive rational numbers fluently. (5.3K)
Communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications using
multiple representations, including symbols, diagrams, graphs, and language as
appropriate. (5.1D)

Process Skills: 5.1D
ELPS: 1A, 2C, 4C, 4F
Performance Indicators
By the end of the lesson the student will be able to…
• Estimate sums and differences of mixed numbers by rounding mixed numbers to the nearest whole number, or
by using ½ as a benchmark fraction and replacing each fraction with the nearest ½ unit.
• Represent fractional amounts in different ways such as improper fractions and mixed numbers.
• Use models, such as fraction strips, to show different ways of adding and subtracting mixed numbers.
• Find equivalent fractions with a common denominator in order to add and subtract mixed numbers.
• Communicate information involving mixed numbers using pictures, diagrams, number sentences, and equations.
