If your question does not appear in this section, please send us an email at [email protected]. Generally questions will be answered in 1 – 3 days. However, we encourage you to investigate this resource page as most questions can be answered immediately and in a clear, concise manner. Note: If your question is of an urgent or personal nature, place call the office at 203 736 2900 ext. 299 and we will try to answer your question or get back to you immediately. Admission to the Program Q: Are admissions competitive? A: The goal of Green Light Academy (GLA) is to increase students’ academic achievement (particularly in the areas of math, science, and technology). As the program is limited to 20 females, we take the admissions process very seriously in order to achieve our goal, paying particular attention to a student’s personal statement and teacher recommendations. A student will not be considered until her application is completed with all forms (application form, medical questionnaire, community standards contract, teacher reference, etc.). The more we know about you and the sooner your application is completed, the more likely you are to be confirmed for acceptance. Please note that we sometimes like to speak with your school’s administrators and teachers to ascertain your appropriateness for a residential summer program, and reserve the right to refuse admission if we determine that a student poses an unreasonable risk or increased liability for the GLA. Q: What is the application deadline? A: Applications for the 2010 GLA Maine are accepted on a “rolling admissions” basis until June 15th, or until we reach our cohort of 20, whichever occurs first. All applicants will be notified of acceptance by email and letter and all accepted students should receive notice by June 25th. If you have not heard from us by the 25th, feel free to email us at [email protected] to check on the status of your application. Q: Will application materials be accepted if any pieces are still missing? A: We can only consider completed applications submitted with all required forms. The exception to this rule is recommendation letters being sent separately, as this is generally beyond the applicant’s control. Otherwise, applications will only be evaluated once the file is complete. Q: Can application materials be faxed or emailed? A: In the interest of time, you can complete your initial application form ONLINE at www.GreenLightAcadeME.org. This form simply starts the process, but your file is not complete until you download, complete, and sign all the additional forms. Remember, the essay and teacher referral are mandatory. These “original signature” forms must be mailed to us to complete your application file; for legal reasons, it is important we have original signatures so faxed submissions are considered as “place holder” documents until originals are receive. If you cannot download the forms, call or email us and we can send you hard copies. We cannot make a decision of admission to the program until ALL materials are received. Application Package Check List: Documents to be read before applying and kept for your reference: • GLA Code of Conduct • GLA Community Standards Contract • “Things to Bring” List Documents to be SIGNED AND RETURNED in order to process your application: • Application Form (online or hard copy), including the 3 required essays • Medical Questionnaire • Waiver (Hold Harmless) Form • Parent/Student Contract (agreeing to Code of Conduct and Community Standards) • Teacher Recommendation (to be sent by teacher) Documents to send, once accepted • Graduation Sign Up and Pick Up Form • Lobster Bake Sign Up Cost of the Program Cost of the program is $1200 per week or $2200 for both weeks which includes all activities, meals, and housing but does NOT include transportation to and from North Haven, Maine. The optional mid-session expedition to Bar Harbor is an additional $300. Should students choose to remain in North Haven for the weekend, activities and meals will not be included; students should bring money accordingly. Lobster Dinner and Orientation The Program commences for Week One on Sunday evening, August 1st and for Week Two on Sunday evening, August 8th with a lobster dinner and orientation Parents and other family members are invited to join us for the lobster dinner at $30 per person. There is a possibility of an Equinox water taxi to return parents to Rockland afterwards. Note: If family members wish to stay overnight on North Haven on Sunday, August 1st, we highly recommend booking accommodations early at Nebo Lodge or Our Place Inn and Cottages as lodging is very scarce in August. If your daughter is an accepted student and you wish to attend the dinner and/or take the Equinox water taxi, please fill out and send in the Lobster Dinner Attendance form, located in For Accepted Students the Apply menu tab. Mid-Session Expedition to Bar Harbor Students will travel by schooner to Bar Harbor where they will spend the night at College of the Atlantic (COA), located by the water. Students will have the opportunity to shop, see a movie, go bowling, enjoy a dinner out, and tour the town, accompanied by Academy staff. Students will also receive an admission tour and meet with a representative of COA to learn about the school and the college admissions process as a whole. This is an excellent opportunity to explore Maine culture in more depth, have some fun, begin (or continue) thinking about the future and college, and learn about coastal Maine while traveling by Schooner. Graduation and Collecting Your Daughter Parents are invited to graduation dinner on Friday, August 6th and our graduation ceremony on Friday, August 13th. Should you wish to attend and thus spend the evening in North Haven, parents must organize their own housing. We recommend Nebo Lodge or Our Place Inn and Cottages. Once again, we recommend booking early as lodging is very scarce in August. Student pick up will take place on Saturday, August 7th and Saturday, August 14th. GLA will happily accompany students on the 7:30 am ferry to Rockland to meet parents. Additionally, parents are welcome to take the 9:30 am ferry to North Haven, gather their daughters, and take the 12:30 pm ferry back to Rockland.
