Pocahontas
A: The Indian princess Pocahontas was born near Jamestown in 1595. She was a happy
girl. She liked running in the forest and dancing in the fields. She often sat on a hill and
watched the sea.
B: On 6 May 1607 she saw something strange. There was a big sailing ship in the bay.
It had big white sails and coloured flags. Pocahontas watched it for a while and then she
ran to the village to tell her father the news.
C: Her father was an Indian chief. His name was Powhatan. He wasn’t happy with the
bad news. There was no piece with white men. They always brought problems. They killed
the Indians because they wanted to take their land and find gold.
D: There was a tall, white man with red hair on the ship. His name was Captain John
Smith. His men established a small town called Jamestown and named the big river the
James River, after the British king James I. There were about 100 men in Jamestown in
1607.
E: One day Captain Smith and his men went to the forest to look for food. They met a
big group of Indians. The Indians attacked them with their bows and arrows and took
Captain Smith away. Chief Powhatan ordered his men to kill him. But brave Pocahontas
saved John Smith’s life.
F: After this Pocahontas and Smith became good friends. John taught her English and
she taught him the Indian language. He told her about life in London.
G: Captain Smith made friends with many Indian tribes. His men explored the land and
made maps. They didn’t find gold but they found the tobacco plant. In the 17th century it
grew only in America. But when winter arrived there was no food in Jamestown.
Pocahontas helped the white men again. She asked her father for corn and meat.
H: More and more ships came to Jamestown, more and more white men came to the
New World. Chief Powhatan was very angry. He declared war on the little colony called
Virginia, after Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen.
I: One day the white men invited Pocahontas to see their ship, and they kept her in
Jamestown as a prisoner because her father had taken some weapons from them.
J: Chief Powhatan didn’t return the weapons. But Pocahontas wasn’t unhappy.
Everyone in Jamestown liked her. They remembered that she had saved Smith’s life. They
also remembered that she had brought them food during the long winter. She learned new
2
things every day. The women gave her English clothes.
K: After some months she met a young tobacco farmer John Rolfe. They were very
happy together. She married him. At the wedding feast there were white men and Indians.
They were all good friends. The wedding brought peace to the Virginia Colony.
L: Soon after the wedding, Pocahontas and John went to London. She met the most
important people of London. She even met King James I. Everyone loved the Indian
princess.
M: Pocahontas and John Rolfe had a son. They called him Thomas. But soon after
Thomas’s birth, Pocahontas became very ill. She died in England in 1617, at the age of 21.
N: Young Thomas went to school in Britain. When he grew up, he went to America to
visit his mother’s land and her tribe. He liked the New World and he stayed there to live.
