Unsung Heroes
The friends of the library are a remarkable, diversified
group of people representing the best interests of both the
Library and West Deptford. Our members come with varying
backgrounds and talents. Though we pull together as a singleminded group, we each have our
preferred activities – some in the
public eye, and some behind the scenes.
Our steadfast, though somewhat shy
friend, Jane, is a wizard at overseeing
the tiny kitchen area in the meeting
room. We never run short of supplies
when the friends provide snacks for
Thank you, Jane and Rita, library activities. Whether it’s Liberty
for being our friends.
Bell shaped cookies for an historic
celebration or local peach cider and freshly sliced fruit for a peach
harvest celebration, Jane is always spot on! The tables look lovely,
the decorations are perfect, and Jane vanishes into the kitchen!
Her cohort Rita is equally unassuming. She works tirelessly,
yet invisibly, to insure that all our sponsored activities are flawless.
Rita arranges tempting cookie or fruit platters, displays the
drinks most attractively, and cleans up after the events better
than the very best maid service. Additionally, Rita frequently
has a novel idea for something the friends should look into doing,
or something we could do better.
Both Jane and Rita are enthusiastic, indefatigable readers. Their
taste in books isn’t the same, but that hardly affects their friendship.
Jane, who has a scientific bent, devours non-fiction. Rita is originally
from Venezuela, though she has resided in the U.S. for many years.
She prefers foreign fiction authors, in Spanish or translated to
English, along with books recommended by her friends.
Recently, Rita formed “The Unexpected Book Club”, an avid
but small group of readers who enjoy novels set in a foreign
location, but with a universally understood theme.

Rosemary Hug, honored as Volunteer of the Year 2017
by friends of the WDFPL, is a dedicated volunteer in
the Technical Services Department. She organizes book
collections and packs boxes of materials for transit
delivery. Rosemary is a true asset to the Library.

Notes from the Board
We are a few months into the New Year and the staff has not
slowed down since January 1st, offering an array of programs and
services that you may not be aware of. Did you know we are more
than just borrowing books? We have several online databases that
provide business information, reader’s advisory, reproducible maps,
auto and small engine repair, general encyclopedias, foreign language,
literary reference information, and access to thousands of magazines.
If you are interested in learning about your past, we even offer
ancestry.com. And all of these online databases are FREE with a
WDFPL library card.
A major activity for your Library is the Second Annual West
Deptford Township Book Festival which will be held at RiverWinds
on Saturday, May 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be
authors from all over the tristate area with book signings, face painting,
food trucks, give-a-ways and so much more. You will want to mark
your calendar for this event.
The Board of Trustees is very proud to announce that our
Children’s Librarian is offering new programs for our littlest
customers. Look under the Children’s Programs and see what we
now offer for children 0-12 months old. Remember class size is
limited so make sure you sign up early.
Did you know that your children can get a library card at the age
of three? My grandson Nate was able to get his library card right after
his birthday in the fall and he is a frequent visitor with his little sister
Evie. Evie will be getting her card after her 3rd birthday in April. They
love the Library and can’t wait to visit and see what is happening.
I hope I was able to peak your interest in a few of our amazing
activities that will be going on here each and every week. As I said,
we are more than just checking out books. So now you have
to keep your Library on your to do list. You and your
family will be glad you did.
From the Library Board of Trustees,
Mrs. April Maska

2016 Treasurer’s/Membership Update
In 2016, the friends of the West Deptford Free Public Library attracted
182 members, representing 154 households. Our generous donors contributed
$5,005.00, which represents a significant portion of our annual budget.
Our dedicated friends utilized these and other hard-earned funds to establish
the new free museum pass program and fund the purchase of desktop
computers, printers, laptop computer, camera, projector, shelf display
units and the Youth Services Summer Reading programs. Don’t forget
to check out BookPage, also provided by our friends, to find out what’s
new in the world of reading.
Our marvelous cadre of friends is comprised of many area residents who
recognize the tremendous value the WDFPL provides to the community.
We heartily appreciate all of our Library’s friends, whether they are loyal,
ongoing donors or new to our group.
We want to acknowledge the passing of one of our most generous and
consistent supporters, Dr. Richard Gotchel. Dr. Gotchel and his wife Betty
have been our friends at the West Deptford Library for many years. The
doctor practiced as an OB-GYN in West Deptford. During his medical career,
Dr. Gotchel delivered over 5,000 babies, and he also served as a Clinical
Professor in Teaching at Jefferson Medical College. We are saddened by
his passing and are grateful for his and Mrs. Betty Gotchel’s support.
We hope to continue to expand our membership in 2017, and we need
your help. Please join your friends and neighbors
and become one of our friends at the Library!

VOL. 15, NO. 2, APRIL 2017
Our year has started off with so many plans and projects that
we could not wait to get started. In January we gave a presentation
on West Deptford History at RiverWinds and are looking forward
to scheduling a few more so let us know if you want us to give
a presentation to your organization. In our display case at the
Library, January through March, we featured the rich history of
the Township Police Department. We hope you had a chance to
check it out.
We are excited to help celebrate
100 years of worship with the Verga
United Methodist Church, a local
church that started out in a tent on
Crown Point Road. Mark your
calendar as this display will be in
the Library from April to June.
You will not want to miss this

Time to Renew Your Membership
In 2017 we celebrate our 52nd year as the West Deptford
Free Public Library. Today’s libraries are transforming from
book depositories to community centers with access to a
wealth of information. Under the strong, committed guidance
of the Library Director and her supportive, dedicated staff, WDFPL is on the leading edge of
this transformation. While the Library still offers books in many formats (hard copy, digital
and audio), our patrons also have the opportunity to attend educational and cultural programs,
search online data bases for such things as family ancestry, job opportunities, or personal
growth and improvement, and an array of other activities.
Nothing in this Library is static. The display cases flanking the entrance relate to current
events; the bulletin boards and book displays always connect to a theme or calendar event.
The WD Historical Society always has a timely display near the café area. The Library has
rotating art exhibits in the Antoinette R. Wolfson Gallery – painting, sculpture, quilting, and
photography. There’s something for everyone.
Now it’s time to renew your membership as a friend to
insure that the resources the Library offers can remain
current and be enhanced with the help of your contributions.
If each of you would coax just one other individual to join
the friends of the WDFPL, think of the places we could go!
Please use the enclosed envelope to make the most generous
donation your circumstances will allow.
Our Library is a facility for all ages and all reasons. It is
friends of the WDFPL
the heart and soul of our community; a treasure to cherish.
