6 | IntuiTek™ Security Keypad
General Specifications
This specification defines the features
and operation of the IntuiTek™
Numeric Keypad, RS-232 version and
Matrix version.
Control System Overview
Description of Basic Operation
The Keypads are low-voltage, microprocessor-based user interfaces designed to operate with a host
controller.
The devices consists of twelve (12)
touch-sensitive buttons that operate
via patented TouchCell™ Field-Effect
touch technology. The buttons are arranged in a standard 3x4 numeric
keypad layout and can be mounted to
a rectangular cutout in a control panel
or wall-mounted to a two-gang
electrical box.
The Keypads are provided with the
following features:
• RS-232 interface or Matrix interface
(model dependent)
• Red/Green LED feedback
• Backlit touch-sensitive keypads
• Audio beeper feedback
A wire harness supplies power to the
Keypad and carries user touch and
LED illumination communications
between the Keypad and controller.
Interface Versions
The Keypads are available in two
interface versions:
• RS-232 Communications Transmits user touch signals to and
receives red/green indicator LED
commands from the host controller
via an RS-232 serial communications protocol
• Matrix Mode Configuration Presents Keypad buttons in an electrical matrix for strobing and monitoring and provides direct control
of the red/green indicator LEDs by
the host controller
Red/Green LED Feature
Green and red LEDs are used to
indicate an acceptance (green) or rejection (red) of a user input sequence.
The host controller determines if an
input sequence is acceptable and
transmits a signal (matrix interface)
or a command (RS-232 interface) to
the Keypad to activate the green or
red LEDs accordingly. The LEDs stay
lit for 10 seconds or until another key
is pressed.
Backlight Feature
Keypad backlight LEDs turn on
whenever a user touch is detected.
The backlight LEDs remain lit for 10
seconds after each touch. This feature
can be disabled by touching the “3”
key and the “*” key simultaneously
for three seconds. The LEDs turn off
and a tone sounds after the three seconds to confirm the feature has been
disabled. To re-enable the feature,
touch the “3” key and the “*” key
simultaneously for three seconds.
www.IntuiTekProducts.com | 7
Beeper Feature
The beeper provides audible confirmation each time a key is touched or
when a user input sequence is accepted/rejected by the host controller.
The beeper feature can be disabled by
touching the “1” key and the “#” key
simultaneously for three seconds. A
tone sounds after the three seconds to
confirm the feature has been disabled.
To re-enable the beeper, touch the “1”
key and the “#” key simultaneously
for three seconds.
RS-232 Version
Transmission Signals
The RS-232 Keypad transmission signals are at RS-232 levels. The ASCII
value of the key touched and the
commands for Red/Green LED operation are communicated with the host
controller through RS-232 serial
communications.
Frame Structure (Diagram 1)
Each frame begins with a start bit
(which is always 0). The start bit is
followed by a series of eight data bits
in succession from the least significant data bit (referenced as D0) to the
most significant data bit (referenced
as D7). A parity bit follows the seven
data bits. The frame ends with a stop
bit (which is always 1).
• ST – Start Bit
• D0 to D7 – Data Bits
Power Supply
The RS-232 version Keypad requires a
regulated 5VDC, 150 mA supply voltage. The Keypad is intended to interface to any controller that meets the
voltage requirements listed in this
document.
When a key is touched, the Keypad
sends the corresponding RS-232
signal to the controller. Key debouncing is done by the Keypad and is
therefore not required of the
controller.
Diagram 1, Frame Structure
8 | IntuiTek™ Security Keypad
• P – Parity
• SP – Stop Bit
When a complete frame is transmitted, it can be directly followed by a
new frame or the communication line
can be set to IDLE (either 1 or high Z
state). Each frame comprises a single
byte of information.
Baud Rate
The set baud rate is 9600kbps.
Communication Protocol
RS-232 compatible serial communication protocol is used for communicating between the Keypad and host
controller. Each packet transmitted is
acknowledged by either an ACK
(acknowledged) or NACK (not acknowledged) command.
Protocol Description
The protocol establishes the convention for data transfer between the
Keypad and the host controller. Data
is transmitted as a packet consisting
of command type, payload, and
checksum. Each packet is acknowledged by the receiver. If any packet
is lost during communication, it is
sent again. The same packet can be
sent a maximum of three times.
The protocol was developed for half
duplex communication; the Keypad
or the host controller function as
either a transmitter or a receiver at
any given time. Data is transmitted
serially one bit at a time.
The Tx idle state is defined as HIGH.
A high to low transition of the start
bit initiates a transmission. Eight data
bits and a parity bit follow before a
stop bit pulls HIGH again.

Installation to Finished Wall
Area Preparation
• You can install the IntuiTek Keypad in any wall that provides a vertical or horizontal support, such as
a metal or wooden stud.
• It is advisable to leave the Keypad
in its protective packaging until
you are ready to connect to the
spliced wiring harness.
Wall Preparation
1. Apply wall compound or spackling
to finish gap between “mud ring”
and finished wall surface (See Side
View).
2. Be sure that the finished wall surface is smooth and solid, and that
the opening for the switch box is no
larger than 100mm x 100mm
(3-15/16" square).
Prepare Electrical Box
1. If mounting into an existing switch
box:
• Remove all previously installed
switches, outlets, etc.
• Be sure that the switch box has a
double gang mounting configuration with the threaded mounting
holes at the top and bottom edges
of the box.
2. If installation of a new switch box is
required:
• Follow standard practices for installation of a double gang switch
box per the particular wall construction and electrical code.
• Ensure that the switch box is installed with the threaded mounting
holes at the top and bottom edges.
