HOW TO USE A “BIR” VISUAL
It is our philosophy that students can increase their skills in another language
while, at the same time, they learn about history, folklore and culture in general. When you
buy a ―BIR‖ visual, you receive a DVD with the visual narrated in the target language with
background music related to the subject matter. For students with a very limited
knowledge of the language, an English version of the visual is also available (sold
separately).
Also included is a CD which contains the scripts (or texts) of the exact narration
(without music) that students hear on the DVD. The CD contains the narration in both the
target language and English. Also the CD contains the scripts (or texts) of the visual in
PDF format which can be downloaded and printed for each student. In this manner,
students can study the text and also follow along as they listen to the narration. They
should make a list of vocabulary words that are new to them and look up their meaning in
a dictionary. The DVDs have a menu to make it possible to study one ―chapter‖ at a time.
They may study on their own computers or in a language laboratory setting and repeat the
narration, first following the text, and later without the text as they become familiar with
the content and its meaning.
The CD also includes questions based on the content of the visual. Even though
the questions may seem elementary and/or obvious, have students answer the questions
in a complete sentence in the target language. If there are ten questions in a section, the
ten answers could be their way of summarizing what they have learned. According to the
ability of each student, teachers should devise ways to get the students to practice and
answer a series of questions (even though memorized at first) as if they were actually
speaking the language naturally. Teachers should explain grammar concepts as needed.
Finally, at the end, there is a quiz covering the general content of the visual. Then, the
visual should be seen without viewing the text and repeated until they understand the
narrator naturally.

LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SERIES
SUGGESTIONS FOR USE
As a former professor at the high school level and the University of Texas, I have become
aware that most students, both Anglo and Hispanic, have little knowledge of the geography, history
and literature of Latin-America. It is for that reason that I have created a series of monographs of
the most outstanding historians, writers and poets of the ―New World.‖ From time to time, we shall
add new names to the list. At the moment, the following titles are available. These CDs (for use on a
computer only ― no video on these) contain both the Spanish and English versions. Print copies
for classroom use or for individual study. These monographs are meant to be an introduction to
each author for native Spanish-speaking students and for advanced non-natives, perhaps
preparing for the Spanish AP examination. The English version can be used for those wishing to
study these topics in that language.

knowledge of Spanish while learning about some of the great names in Latin-American history and literature. Each

SUGGESTIONS FOR USE

have become aware that most students, both Anglo and Hispanic, have little
knowledge of the geography, history and literature of Spain. These CDs (for use on

versions. Print copies for classroom use or for individual study. These
monographs are meant to be an introduction to each author for native
Spanish-speaking students and for advanced non-natives, perhaps preparing for
the Spanish AP examination. The English version can be used for those wishing to
study these topics in that language.
