Dear Teen Masters National Finalists and Families,
From the overwhelming turnout for the Saturday night reception to the culminating trophy
presentations on Friday afternoon, I have to count the 2014 National Finals as one of the best in
its 17 year history!
It takes a lot of talented and dedicated people to make an event the magnitude of the Teen
Masters run smoothly:
x
To Christine Jobe and the amazing staff at Sawgrass Lanes – thank you for making
everyone feel so welcome and keeping everything running smoothly and on time!
x
To Roger Keel – thank you for documenting the fun and bowling through photography!
x
To Tony LeVance from A Bowlers Edge Pro Shop – thank you for your expertise and
treating each of the kids as if they were your very own!
x
To the PBA’s Kirk and Mary von Krueger – thank you for making the kids feel like pros!
x
To Kegel’s Mike Purdy and Caleb – thank you for your hard work maintaining the
challenging lane conditions!
x
To John Mazza, Del Warren, and Tom Clark – thank you for sharing your experience and
wisdom!
x
Special thanks to Dexter Bowling, Kegel, the Kegel Training Center, Ebonite and the
Professional Bowlers Association for your generous support!
x
To volunteers such as Jaime Romano, Natalie Goodman, Gaylinn Gaines and others –
thank you for taking a significant load off of my shoulders!
x
And finally, to the Broward County Special Olympians – thank you for inspiring us all
while reminding us that we can bowl for the sheer joy of bowling!
To the kids who checked their egos at the door, stepped up to the unique challenge offered by
the Teen Masters and never quit, I salute you!
To the parents who sacrificed so much to allow their kids the opportunity to experience the
challenge while learning about themselves, you have my respect and admiration.
Please be safe and I look forward to seeing each and every one of you in Las Vegas in 2015!

Why Did the Short Pattern Play Harder When We Tried To Make It Easier?
The low-volume Skill patterns were introduced into real competition (as opposed to testing in a
controlled environment) at Sawgrass Lanes during the 2013 Teen Masters National Finals. After
watching bowlers with lower ball speeds struggle on the 26' short pattern, a decision was made to
'soften' the pattern in 2014 by increasing its length 2 feet.
Testing on the 28' pattern was done at the Kegel Training Center by none other than PBA Hall of Famer
Brian Voss using the PBA Skill 2.0 and 3.0 balls. Satisfied that the additional length made it easier to get
the balls down the lane, the change was locked in for the 2014 National Finals and the new and
improved Short Skill pattern was published on TeenMastersBowling.com.
One of the great things about having the experts from Kegel on site to manage lane conditions is process
verification. Because they measure what they do, we are able to confirm that the intended pattern is
what actually ends up on the lanes.
So if the short pattern was intended to play easier and if the intended pattern was in fact put on the
lanes, why did the Short pattern play harder in 2014 than it did in 2013? The answer is that the change
in difficulty had nothing to do with the pattern and everything to do with a change in the lane surface
that occurred between the 2013 and 2014 events. As part of its regular lane maintenance procedures,
Sawgrass Lanes had the wood portion of its lanes screen coated in October, and screen coating causes a
significant increase in the amount of friction generated between a bowling ball a lane surface.
Our failure came in forgetting to ask if anything had changed in the lane surface since the year before
and the responsibility for that failure is mine. I apologize that our intent to make the Short pattern play
easier was not realized in 2014.

The 2015 Teen Masters National Finals Competitors
With 60 lanes, the new bowling stadium at South Point in Las Vegas offers the Teen Masters the
following capacities:
x
x
4 bowlers per pair on each of 3 squads = 360 bowlers
5 bowlers per pair on each of 3 squads = 450 bowlers
The 2015 National Finals field will be filled as follows:
x
Teen Masters Leagues
Leagues utilizing the low-volume Skill lane patterns and PBA Skill bowling balls are the
key to the growth of the Teen Masters. Bowling centers who establish such leagues will
be offered special packages including PBA Skill balls and entries to the National Finals.
To control costs, each league will be allowed to determine if it will use one or both PBA
Skill balls. If your center would like to host a Teen Masters league, have them call me at
434-227-0205.
x
Teen Masters Qualifying Tournaments
The 2015 qualifying tournaments will differ last year’s:
¾ Only one entry fee - $49
¾ Low-volume Skill oil patterns
¾ Limited to PBA Skill balls – both the 2.0 and 3.0 may be used
¾ Potential scholarship awards from local sponsorships
x
Teen Masters State All Stars
Most states do not have enough competitive teen bowlers to justify a qualifying
tournament, so each sponsoring state will be allowed to send 1 boy and 1 girl who are
high school juniors or younger. Counting Washington DC, this could generate 102
entries.
x
Last Chance Tournament
Every year bowlers who have qualified for the national finals are forced to drop out at
the last minute due to illness, injury, or family emergency. Assuming the 2015 National
Finals in Las Vegas sells out; a Last Chance Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 27
to fill any holes in the roster that may pop up. Whether they advance into the finals
field or not, all Last Chance participants will be treated as national finalists and will
receive jerseys, credentials, a Welcome Celebration ticket, and will be eligible to
participate in all side tournaments and social events.
