School Program in order to offer STEAM r

The FHS and PVHS AP Capstone Participants are teaming team with the Sacred Heart AfterSchool Program in order to offer STEAM related activities to students 1st-6th grade. The after
school STEAM classes will be led by some of the top students from FHS and PVHS and
benefit both the students at Sacred Heart as well as our own students. The STEAM classes
will be offered every Tuesday starting September 20th from 4-5:30 at Sacred Heart and will
cost families $10 a class for a drop in fee or they can purchase a 6 class punch card for $50.
All proceeds from the classes will go towards the AP Capstone Foundation and will help cover
the cost of student exams between the two schools.
What is STEAM?
It is a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics program that will help students to
learn more about the world around them by giving them hands on experience by working on
science related projects that end up as your child’s own unique masterpiece. Students will
learn to develop critical thinking skills, to investigate the unknown, to question, to problem
solve and to begin to understand complex systems. Students become empowered when they
have the confidence to figure things out for themselves with a hands on approach to science
with an art twist. These one and a half hour enrichment courses will focus on a fusion of art
and science in order to foster creativity and critical thinking. These particular areas of science
include magnets, polymers, rocketry, forensics, physics, astronomy AND MUCH MORE.

Fingerprint ScienceStudents will explore
the science behind
fingerprints. They will
also learn how they are
made, how to read
them and what they are
used for in daily life.
Jack and the
Parachute- Students will
explore the scientific
method and learn about
the importance of trial
and error.
4th-6th Grade
Do it yourself DNA- All living things
have DNA inside their cells. How do
scientists extract the DNA from cells in
order to study it? In this science
experiment you can make your own
DNA extraction kit from household
chemicals and use it to extract DNA from
strawberries.
Basketball Paper Tower- In this
engineering session students will explore
the concepts of gravity, engineering, and
the importance of trial and error. Come
learn the foundation of being a model
engineer.
