TC Williams Field Hockey Skills Card

1. Receiving Ball/Preparing Footwork – Players will be able to
receive the ball with feet facing forward. All players ask for pass with
stick on the ground and can move the ball on the first touch. Players
must be able to transfer the ball across their body from the left and
right side of the field.

2. Hitting – Baseball Swing. Player can hit the ball using the
baseball swing, with the toe of their stick facing up throughout the
entire swing, hands together, ball is hit off the front foot and weight
is transferred front back to front. Player understands free hit rules
and scoring situations using the hit.

3. Slap Hit – Player understands the basics of the slap hit and
can use it both on the field to pass and in the circle to score.

4. Push Pass – Strong push passes use torque of the hips and
lever movement of the stick to create a strong push pass. Players
can demonstrate that they can lift the ball when needed to avoid a
defenders stick.
 5. Cutting and creating space – Players are able to make
different cuts to get open for a pass from their teammates.

6. Dribbling Positions – Basic dribbling position is in front of the
body and slightly to the right. The player can dribble on angles at
speed, with sharp turns and vision. Players dribble with different
tempos, speeds and styles depending on the defender’s distance to
the ball. (loose dribble, tight dribble, angles)
 7. Defensive Fundamentals – Basic Defensive skills include
proper engagement run, break down steps, slowing an offensive
players down without committing, proper stance, proper distance
and angle to offensive player, how to force left/right, how to force
the ball to different areas of the field, jabbing, block tackling and
containing.
 8. Pressure/Cover Defensive Fundamentals – Players
understand the basics of pressure and cover defense and to work
together to pressure the ball. Players need to stand as cover 5-7
yards away on a 45 degree angle. Players understand when to switch
pressure/cover roles as ball moves.
 9. Communication Basics – Players are comfortable and
understand what to say on the field and when. Important words are
Flat, Through, Ball, Mark, Turn, Man On, Got Me, Force Left, Force
Right, Bring Her, etc. Players can use these words or phrases
repeatedly when needed in a very loud voice.
 10. Rules, Fouls and Concepts of the Game – Players
understand the rules of the game. These include but at not limited
to Obstruction, 3rd Party, Advancing, Dangerous Play, Wrong Side of
stick, Substitution, Proper Equipment, Corners, Free Hits, Self Starts,
25 Yard Hits, How to take a Stroke, Overtime, 1vs1 Shootout
Procedures, Green/Yellow/ Red Cards, etc.
 11. 1 v 1 Basics – Players understand and can perform at least 4
elimination moves such as; pull right, pull left, spin move, lifting ball
over stick, pop dribble, y dodge, reverse stick pull, ball through feet,
etc. Players can perform a 1 v GK in a shootout scenario.
 12. Advanced Skills Drag Flick and Arial – For varsity only
Player can effectively shoot on goal using drag flick. Player can shoot
to all four corners using proper technique. Player can pass ball over
player’s head using an Ariel on the field.
